About WOOPF™

Meet Dr Duncan Houston,
the emergency vet who started WOOPF™

Every product on this site exists because of something I have treated, fitted, washed or watched a dog take apart. Bridie, Kiko and Jess test every version at home before it is listed. This is who I am, how I work, and what you can hold me to.

The short version

  • Who designs it

Me. Dr Duncan Houston, an emergency and critical care vet who spent a decade in animal nutrition and product development before WOOPF™. Not a marketing team with a vet on retainer.

  • Who tests it

Bridie, Kiko and Jess, at home, on real walks, real dinners and real naps. Bridie has two replaced hips, Kiko has no off switch and Jess notices everything. Between them they find the weak point in most things.

  • What that gets you

Products with a reason to exist, sizes by measurement rather than by breed, plain instructions on what each thing does and does not do, and reviews that stay attached to the product they are about.

The story

How an emergency vet ends up making dog gear

I was working in pet food before I qualified. I studied veterinary science at the University of Sydney, graduated in 2017, worked as a vet in Sydney, found my way into emergency and critical care, and now practise in Hong Kong. Emergency work is a strange education in dog products, because you meet the product at the moment it fails.

You see the dog that backed out of a loose harness at a kerb. The collar that never dried, and the sore neck under it. The toy that was sold as indestructible, now in pieces, and the pieces are the problem. The old retriever who stopped using her bed because the step up hurt. None of that is exotic. It is a normal week.

Nothing goes on sale until it has been through my own house first.

Then there is Bridie. She was born with hips bad enough that both were replaced, at Colyton Vet Clinic, and years on she is doing well. Living through her recovery taught me more about bed height, footing and where a harness strap sits on a healing dog than any lecture did.

WOOPF™ started because I kept recommending gear I did not fully believe in. So I began designing my own, against the failures I see, with one rule: nothing goes on sale until it has been through my own house first. Bridie is the comfort and mobility department. Kiko, our younger golden, is the durability department, whether she was appointed or not. Jess, the border collie, is the standards department, and she is hard to please.

The Woopf Way is simple. If your dog is not resting, they should be moving with purpose: walking well, playing properly, and using their nose and brain in ways that are stimulating and controlled. Every range on this site serves one of those states, and I will always tell you what a product does and what it cannot do.

Where the products come from

Five things the emergency room taught me about dog gear

  1. A pull is physics before it is behaviour.

A dog that pulls into a collar takes the load on its throat. A front-clip harness turns the dog when it pulls, so the pull stops paying. It redirects; it does not train. The lead and your consistency do that, and nothing you clip to a dog stops it pulling on its own.

  2. Wet gear is a skin problem waiting to happen.

Webbing that stays damp holds moisture and grit against the neck, and moisture plus rubbing is how sore skin starts. Coated webbing rinses under a tap, wipes dry in a minute and never picks up the smell.

  3. A bored dog invents a job.

The jobs they invent are the skirting board and the sofa. Sniffing, foraging, licking and chewing are the jobs a dog was built for, so I make dinner take longer, put it through the nose, and give the jaws something that is meant to be chewed.

  4. Old joints want a low step and a firm surface.

A bed that sinks, or sits too high, is a bed a stiff dog stops using. Memory foam that holds its shape, a low entry and a cover that goes in the machine are the whole brief. Bridie signs off on every bed.

  5. A lost dog cannot tell anyone your number.

A tag engraved with the number you changed two years ago is jewellery. The Smart ID Tag opens a profile you can edit in a minute, and the GPS & Health Tracker shows where the dog actually is on an Ask A Vet plan. Neither replaces a registered microchip. Both add a layer.

Heads of quality control

Meet Bridie, Kiko and Jess: a mix of chaos and control. Nothing is listed until it has survived all three.

  1. Comfort and mobility

    Bridie Golden retriever

Two total hip replacements, both healed, and a strong opinion about bed height, footing and where a harness strap sits. If Bridie gets on and off a bed easily, it ships.

Bridie and Kiko, two golden retrievers, on a beach wearing WOOPF™ collars and a lead
    Bridie and Kiko, walk testing
  2. Durability and enthusiasm

    Kiko Golden retriever

Young, fast, and manners are optional the moment a bird exists. Leads, clips, seams and toys go to Kiko first, and she finds the weak point inside a week.

A golden retriever swimming with her head above the water
    Sealskin testing, in progress
  3. Standards

    Jess Border collie

The honour student in a house full of clowns. Jess is the reason the treat toys have levels: if a puzzle bores her by day two, it goes back to the drawing board.

What you can hold me to

These are the rules every page on this site is written to. If you catch one being broken, tell me.

  • Sizes by measurement.

Every product page carries a tape-measure guide, with dog weights as a guide only. Between sizes, I tell you which way to go.

  • No magic words.

I do not sell you words like indestructible or escape-proof, and I will never tell you a piece of gear stops a dog pulling. Gear changes the physics; training changes the dog.

  • Real prices.

A bundle's was price is what its parts cost on the day, not a number invented for the strike-through. A saving is one you could check with a calculator.

  • Reviews that stay put.

Reviews live on the product they are about, and a verified badge means Judge.me matched the review to an order. The count and the average are shown as they stand, not rounded up.

  • Safety layers, not substitutes.

Smart ID and GPS add layers; neither replaces a registered microchip, and activity data is not a diagnosis.

  • No product treats anything.

Beds, enrichment and walking gear support a dog. Your vet treats it. If something is wrong, that is where you go, not to a shopping cart.

  • Tested here first.

Nothing is listed until it has been through my own house, on my own dogs, on real walks, dinners and naps.

  • Designed by a named vet.

Every product is designed by Dr Duncan Houston, and every product page says what it is for, who it suits and how to use it, in plain words.

WOOPF's orthopedic range is the best

She is a bit arthritic but she loves this bed. Easy for her to get on and off and she does enjoy spending time on it.

This is our new favorite harness

The colors are bright and it is eye-catching to say the least on top of being strong enough for a bully breed. My bull terrier wore it during a scent work trial this weekend for the first time to test it out. She proudly earned two new titles while wearing it.

THE TREATS DO NOT FALL OUT!

I REPEAT: The treats do not fall out! This is *huge* because I feel like toys/enrichment like this often fail in that the animals roll the toy, the treats fall out, and the game is over. In this snuffle ball, the felt (?) keeps the treats in place and my high-drive dogs spend 30-45 mins (!) working their way through these.

    The best!

Absolutely love this collar! It's comfortable around my dogs neck. Doesn't get wet and smelly like his old one. I'm so happy I found this product, pity I didn't know about it sooner.

Is Dr Duncan a real, practising vet?

Yes. Dr Duncan Houston graduated with a BVSc from the University of Sydney in 2017, works in emergency and critical care, and currently practises in Hong Kong. WOOPF™ is designed around what that work shows him, and he still works the floor.

Does Dr Duncan design every product himself?

Yes. Every WOOPF™ product is designed by Dr Duncan Houston and tested at home on Bridie, Kiko and Jess before it is listed. Every product page carries his notes on what the product is for and how to use it.

Can I ask Dr Duncan about my dog?

Not through the shop. For a health question, the Ask A Vet app has certified vet chat. For anything urgent, go to your nearest emergency clinic now; a chat is not the place for a dog that is struggling to breathe, bloated or bleeding. For product questions, use the contact page and a human will answer.

How do the product pages help me choose?

Every page has a measure-first size guide with the dog weights as a guide only, a plain list of what the product does and does not do, a vet note from Dr Duncan, verified reviews that stay on that product, and a comparison with its neighbours so you can pick the right one, not the dearest one.

Where does WOOPF™ ship, and how fast?

Orders are dispatched the next business day and tracked, with free shipping on orders over $30. Delivery times by destination are on the shipping page. If a size is wrong, contact us before you send anything back and we will sort it.

Is there a WOOPF™ for cats?

That is PURRZ™, designed by the same vet around what cats actually do: hide, scratch, hunt, climb and rest. Gary the Ragdoll is head of testing.
