How it works

Why the Turtleshell works when one-strength chews fail

Illustrated golden retrievers with the three WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshells: a puppy and a senior on Blue Soft, an adult on Purple Standard beside a kneeling man, and a big dog on Black Hard

Match the strength to the dog, not to the marketing

Same shape, same treat hole, same size; only the rubber changes.

  • Soft for puppies and seniorsSoft (Blue) is for puppies still cutting adult teeth, older dogs with worn teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it.
  • Standard for most adult dogsStandard (Purple) is right for most adult dogs.
  • Hard for the power chewersHard (Black) is for the staffies, cattle dogs and mastiffs who have destroyed everything else.
  • Torn between two strengthsBetween two strengths, go harder for a shredder and softer for a puppy or a senior.
Illustrated man spooning kibble into the base of a black WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell, a stuffed shell in an open freezer, and a golden retriever licking the frozen fill

A treat hole in the base that turns a snack into a session

Pack kibble, wet food or xylitol-free peanut butter into the base.

  • Freeze it for longer sessionsFreeze it, and a five-minute snack becomes 20 minutes or more of licking, nudging and problem-solving.
  • For the bored or anxious dogA frozen fill is the single best tool for a dog that gets destructive when bored or anxious.
  • A shell that wobbles and rollsThe shell shape wobbles and rolls so the food does not fall straight out.
Illustrated golden retriever chewing a black WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell, then a man brushing its teeth and looking at them with a mouth mirror, a stethoscope round his neck

Scute ridges that reach the tooth surface

The raised plates and the grooves between them work across the teeth and along the gum line as the dog chews, and get saliva flowing.

  • Dental help between brushesThe shell supports dental hygiene between brushes and check-ups.
  • No replacement for brushes or check-upsThe shell does not replace brushes and check-ups, and any vet who tells you a toy does is selling something.
  • Brown tartar is a vet visitBrown tartar or breath you can smell across the room is a vet visit, not a toy.

Four sizing rules

  • One size: 15 cm long, 9.5 cm wide and 5 cm high, about 160 g. It suits dogs from about 5 kg to about 35 kg: too big to swallow, small enough to carry.

  • Power chewer over 35 kg, or any dog that can get the whole shell behind their teeth? Take the Blocky Bone Large instead.

  • The real choice is the strength. Soft for puppies still cutting adult teeth, seniors and gentle chewers. Standard for most adult dogs. Hard for the ones that have destroyed everything else.

  • Typical breeds in that range: Cavalier, Staffy, Kelpie, Labrador (11 to 77 lb).

How to

How to use a stuffable chew toy safely

  • Illustrated man sitting cross-legged, holding a Blue WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell for a puppy, with a senior dog on Blue, an adult on Purple and a big dog on Black

    Pick the strength

Soft for puppies and seniors, Standard for most dogs, Hard for power chewers. Not sure? A dog that has never destroyed a toy takes Standard; a dog with a graveyard of toys takes Hard.

  • Illustrated man spooning kibble into the base of a WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell as a golden retriever watches, then sitting beside the dog as it licks the stuffed shell

    Introduce it stuffed

The first session should be a win: pack the base with something your dog loves and let them work it out while you are in the room.

  • Illustrated golden retriever working a stuffed WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell as a man picks up his keys, as a couple talk on the sofa, and after a walk with the lead on the floor

    Freeze for longer sessions

Stuffed and frozen, the Turtleshell keeps most dogs busy for 20 minutes or more. Use it before you leave the house, during visitors, or after a big walk.

  • Illustrated man pointing at the treat hole of a WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell beside a sitting golden retriever, then dropping a worn shell into a bin

    Inspect after every session

Look at the rim and the treat hole. Retire the toy once a piece can be bitten off or the hole has widened enough to trap a jaw.

  • Illustrated man sitting with a golden retriever, spooning kibble into a WOOPF™ Chewster Turtleshell beside a measuring cup, the food bowl and a plate of treats

    Count the calories

Whatever goes in the hole comes out of the daily food allowance. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

No chew toy is indestructible, and a determined dog can damage anything given enough time. Match the strength to the dog: a Hard shell in a puppy's mouth can crack a tooth, and a Soft one in a power chewer's mouth becomes pieces. Supervise sessions, especially the first few. Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol (sometimes labelled birch sugar): it is toxic to dogs. If your dog swallows a piece of any toy and vomits, strains, or goes off food, see a vet the same day.

Why I designed it

The same chew toy is dangerous for one dog and boring for the next. So I made three.

In emergency I see both ends of the same mistake. The young Labrador with a cracked tooth from a chew that was far too hard for it, and the staffy that shredded a soft toy in ten minutes and swallowed the pieces.

  • One-strength-fits-one-dogChew toys are not one-size-fits-all. They are one-strength-fits-one-dog.
  • Match the rubber to the jawThe Turtleshell comes in Soft, Standard and Hard so you match the rubber to the jaw, with a treat hole in the base so the work lasts and a ridged shell that actually reaches the tooth surface.
  • Tested on Bridie and KikoBridie and Kiko tested every prototype.
  • If your dog beats the Hard oneIf your dog beats the Hard one, email me the photo. That is how the next version gets better.

    • Roadie absolutely loves this turtle toy! As soon as I gave it to her she carried it all over the house and it's quickly become one of her favorite toys. I love that I can stuff treats inside to keep her busy, and it's held up really well even with daily chewing. The shape is adorable, it's easy for her to pick up and carry around, and it keeps her entertained way longer than most toys do. We've tried a lot of chew toys over the years and this is definitely one of the best. Highly recommend!

    • My EBT pup has very strong jaws and very inquisitive mouth, and he gets bored really easily. The black turtle shell has survived where others perished, and keeps the pup entertained for about 15 minutes or so, depending on whether I fill it with basic kibble or a mix of good treats & kibble. We highly recommend! I would prefer a bright colour though, as it can be difficult to find at times, especially when it has been discarded under the sofa or in a dark corner.

    • My dog usually destroys toys. So far this one has survived with no injuries!

    Which strength should I choose?

Soft (Blue) for puppies still cutting their adult teeth, older dogs with worn or missing teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it. Standard (Purple) for most adult dogs: it is the one to buy if you have never had a toy destroyed. Hard (Black) for the dogs with a graveyard of toys behind them: staffies, cattle dogs, mastiffs, and any dog that has already shredded a Standard. Between two strengths, go harder for a shredder and softer for a puppy or a senior.

    Is it safe for puppies?

The Soft strength is made for them. Puppies chew hardest between about three and seven months while the adult teeth come through, and a chew that is too hard at that age can chip a tooth. Give a puppy the Soft, stuffed and supervised, and move up to Standard once the adult teeth are in and you have seen how they chew. Do not start a puppy on the Hard.

Will it suit my dog's size?

It is one size: 15 cm long, 9.5 cm wide and about 160 g, so it suits dogs from about 5 kg to about 35 kg. The rule for any chew toy is that the whole thing must not fit behind the teeth. A power chewer over 35 kg, or a dog that can get the entire shell in their mouth, should take the Blocky Bone Large instead.

What are the flecks in the rubber?

Recycled rubber. The Turtleshell is made with 25% recycled content and the coloured specks you can see in the shell are that material showing through. They are part of the rubber, not paint, and they do not chip off. Black hides them, Blue and Purple show them more.

What can I put in it, and how do I clean it?

Kibble, wet food, plain yoghurt, mashed banana or pumpkin, and peanut butter that is free of xylitol. Freeze it for a longer session. Afterwards, top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water and a bottle brush through the hole. Let it dry before refilling. Whatever goes in counts toward the day's food.

    Does it clean teeth?

The ridges and grooves scrub the tooth surface and get saliva flowing, which helps between brushes. It does not replace brushing or a dental check. If you can see brown tartar or smell the breath from across the room, that needs a vet, not a toy.

What if it arrives damaged or I picked the wrong strength?

Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice with a photo and your order number. Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are fully covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Picked the wrong strength and it is unused in its packaging? Email within 14 days and we will look at a swap.
