Dr Duncan explains the Poop & Go Compostable Bags

Back to sizes
Read the script
  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 All right, let's go through the poo bags, the WOOPF™ poo bags. I have two different types: one, two. I have the compostable, 100% compostable poo bags made from cornstarch. They will break down in 90 days in moist dirt with worms and bugs and all that stuff.
  3. 0:32 Then I have the 50% recycled plastic bags. Why do I have two different bags? Why did I not just stick with the compostable ones? Look, it gives two different price ranges. The plastic ones are, you know, obviously cheaper. I'm using 50% recycled plastic because if I increase the amount of recycled plastic in there, the bags did become a bit more brittle; they weren't as stretchy. I'm still working on it, but I'm trying to make a bag that your fingers aren't going to go through and there's somewhat a way of it being environmentally friendly. I am working on making 100% recycled plastic, but at the moment, to make these still be a good bag that's not going to split on your hand when you pick up poo, 50% recycled ones, they're purple. I really like these; they're really good. But, you know, I do prefer the compostable ones, but they are more expensive.
  4. 1:17 So, let's go to the compostable ones. Both of these do have recycled cardboard cores in the center. I'm trying to limit as much plastic as we're using cause, obviously, poos are every day, poos are all the time, poos aren't going to stop. So, we're trying to make poos as environmentally friendly as possible. So, these bags, these compostable bags, are made of cornstarch. When you throw these out, they have to go into a moist environment. Look, they can go into landfill and stuff like that, it's fine, but the bags will take longer to break down. At the moment, if you bury them in, like, compost or something where there's worms and bugs and they can chew it apart, they will break down in 90 days.
  5. 1:52 These rolls are slightly thicker than these ones. The reason why is I made both of the bags bigger than your average bag because I've got Golden Retrievers that do big poos. So, I obviously needed a bag that was slightly bigger than just standard ones, and I've got big hands. Big hands means big poo on my hands, I don't want that. So, these can be thinner because they're a bit stretchier, they're made of plastic, they're less likely to split. But the compostable ones, I have made these bags thicker than your standard bag, which means the rolls are bigger. So you can look, there is a slight difference in the box size for these two.
  6. 2:26 The thicker bags, it means that it doesn't always fit in all the small kind of dog roll poo bag dispensers. It fits in my stuff because I made a pouch where you can have treats as well as poo bags, and there's enough space to have two rolls in there. So when you run out of one roll, you have a spare roll. That is what is really annoying, is when you have a poo bag dispenser that only holds one roll and then you run out of bags, there's no backup. Anyway, so these bags, you might have to remove one of these bags on there to make it fit into a smaller poo bag dispenser. But at the moment, these fit in my stuff.
  7. 2:58 They're just slightly bigger and thicker because I don't want them to split. I want to make sure that you have a bag that's really easy to pick up poo, it doesn't break apart. Like, you don't put your hand in there and then it falls apart in your hand. But look, you know, you want to use these within a few years. They do start to get a bit thinner and more brittle after a few years of sitting around, but look, you're probably going to use them because it's poo. They poo multiple times a day, so you're going to have to use multiple bags a day anyway.
  8. 3:24 So, that's the compostable and the 50% recycled poo bag range. I will have more options for poo bags in the future. Buy them in bulk, you may as well have them. So rather than using, like, a pooper scooper or whatever and then chucking it down the toilet or flushing it or whatever, I do wrap these up and then chuck them in the bin or bury them or whatever, like whatever's easiest where I am.
  9. 3:44 But I know that at least if they go into landfill, they're going to break down and be much better for the environment than, you know, your plastic ones. Obviously better than these, but I'm working on 100% recycled ones. These are 50% recycled, they're a different price range, and then we can work on getting these things better together. All right, that's the poo bag range from WOOPF™.

How it works

Why these are the bags a vet carries

A man kneeling beside a golden retriever ties the handles of a green WOOPF™ compostable poo bag printed with a tree.

Thick enough to trust, big enough for a big dog

The film is 25 microns, which is thicker than most compostable bags on the shelf, and the difference is the one you feel with your hand.

  • One bag, big dog or smallThe bags are 23 by 33 centimetres, so a Labrador's pickup ties off with room to spare and a small dog's does not need two.
  • Tears at the lineThe perforation tears cleanly at the line rather than halfway down the next bag.
  • Fits every standard dispenserThe rolls fit every standard dispenser including the Explorer Dual Pocket Pouch.
  • No scent addedThere is no scent added, because perfume on a poo bag fools nobody and irritates some dogs' noses.
A man kneeling beside a golden retriever points to a clipboard headed Compostable with three ticked lines, a box and rolls of the bags at his feet.

Certified compostable, and what that actually means

"Biodegradable" on a poo bag means almost nothing: everything biodegrades eventually, and most bags that say it are ordinary plastic with an additive.

  • Corn starch, no polyethyleneThese bags are made from GMO-free corn starch and plant-based film, with no polyethylene.
  • Australia, Europe and the USAThe bags are certified to AS 5810 (home compostable) and AS 4736 (industrial) in Australia, EN 13432 in Europe and ASTM D6400 in the USA.
  • No microplastics left behindThat certification means the bag breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and biomass in a compost, with no microplastics left behind.
  • Not landfill, not the vegetable patchThe certification does not mean the bag vanishes in landfill, and it does not make the contents safe for the vegetable patch.
A golden retriever sits behind a cardboard box of 150 compostable poo bags and ten green rolls.

Plastic-free from the bag to the box, in four packs

The cores are cardboard, the box is cardboard, the ink is soy-based, and the film is corn. That is the whole pack.

  • From ten rolls to fortyThe pack comes as ten rolls of 15 in the 150, up to forty rolls in the 600.
  • About eight months for one dogThe 600 is about eight months of walks for one dog or four for two.
  • Store it cool and dryStore the box somewhere cool and dry: plant-based film is designed to break down, so a hot car boot or a damp garage shortens its life.
  • Use it within a yearA pack you will use within a year is the right pack to buy.

Three pack rules

  • Count your pickups, not your dog. One dog at two or three a day uses 150 bags in about two months, 300 in four, 450 in six and 600 in eight. Two dogs halve those numbers.

  • The 450 is the best price per bag today. Buy the pack you will use within a year: plant-based film is made to break down, and it starts to do so faster in heat and damp.

  • One bag size, 23 x 33 cm, for every dog. A chihuahua does not need a smaller bag; a Great Dane needs this one, and sometimes two.

How to

How to pick up properly (and what to look at while you do)

  • A man in a purple jumper crouches beside a golden retriever and loads a green roll of compostable poo bags into a purple WOOPF™ pouch.

    Load the roll core-first

Cardboard core in, tail out through the outlet. In the Explorer Dual Pocket Pouch the second roll waits in the other pocket.

  • A woman kneeling beside a golden retriever holds a green roll in one hand and a green WOOPF™ compostable poo bag torn off it in the other.

    Tear at the line

Pull to the perforation and tear across it, not down the bag. The line is where the bag is meant to give.

  • A man in a purple jumper crouches beside a golden retriever and picks up a poo with his hand inside a green WOOPF™ compostable poo bag.

    Glove, grab, invert, tie

Hand inside the bag, pick up, turn the bag inside out over the pickup and knot it at the top. A 23 x 33 bag leaves room for the knot.

  • A man in a purple jumper crouches over a poo with blood in it, phone to his ear and an open green bag in his hand, while a worried golden retriever looks on.

    Look before you bag

Colour, consistency, mucus, blood, worms, anything that was not food. Two days of loose stool, any blood, or straining with nothing produced is a vet visit.

  • A man in a purple jumper drops a tied green WOOPF™ compostable poo bag into a general waste bin while a golden retriever watches.

    Bin it right

A dedicated pet-waste composter or worm farm if you have one; the council green bin only if your council accepts pet waste; otherwise general waste. Never the compost that goes on food.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

What comes out tells you what is going on inside. Loose stool for more than two days, blood, mucus that keeps coming, or straining with nothing produced is a vet visit, not a wait-and-see, and worms you can see mean the whole household gets checked. Pick up every time: roundworm eggs shed in a lawn stay infective for years and children pick them up first. Dog waste never goes into a compost that feeds food crops, whatever the bag is made of; a compostable bag makes the disposal cleaner, it does not make the contents safe. Keep bags away from children and puppies, and store the box cool and dry.

Why I designed it

I pick up after two golden retrievers every day. I have opinions about bags.

A bag has one job and most eco bags fail at it: they are thin, they tear on the perforation, and you find out at the worst possible moment. So these are 25 microns thick and 23 by 33 centimetres, sized for what a 30 kilo dog produces, and they went through months of daily use before I put my name on the box.

  • Certified home compostableThe second thing I wanted was for "compostable" to mean something. These are certified home compostable to AS 5810, the Australian standard, and to the industrial standards in Australia, Europe and the USA, and the cores and the box are cardboard, so there is no plastic anywhere in the pack.
  • What that does and does not meanI would also rather tell you what that does and does not mean. A compostable bag breaks down in a compost. In landfill it behaves like everything else in landfill, so the win there is that it started as corn rather than oil.
  • Never the compost that feeds your vegetablesAnd dog poo never goes in the compost that feeds your vegetables or, in most councils, the green bin: a dedicated pet-waste composter or your council's own rules decide that, not the bag.
  • Pick up every timePick up every time regardless. Worm eggs in a lawn stay infective for years, and what comes out of your dog is the best free health check you will get all day.
  • Two golden retrievers, every dayBridie and Kiko provide the test material. Daily.

Are these really compostable, or just "biodegradable"?

Compostable, and certified. They are made from GMO-free corn starch and plant-based film with no polyethylene, and certified to AS 5810 (home compostable) and AS 4736 (industrial) in Australia, EN 13432 in Europe and ASTM D6400 in the USA. "Biodegradable" on its own is the word to distrust: everything biodegrades eventually, and most bags that say it are ordinary plastic with an additive that breaks it into smaller plastic. Ours leave no microplastics behind.

Can I put them in my compost or the council green bin?

The bag, yes. The contents are the question. Dog waste can carry roundworm, hookworm and Giardia, so it never goes into a compost that feeds food crops. A dedicated pet-waste composter or worm farm away from the vegetables works well with these bags. Council green bins vary: some accept pet waste in a certified compostable bag and many do not, so check yours. If neither applies, general waste is the honest answer, and the bag started life as corn rather than oil.

Will they break down in landfill?

No, and neither will anything else. Landfill is built to keep things from breaking down. The benefit of these bags in landfill is what they are made of, not what they do there: no fossil plastic, no microplastics. If you want the compostable part to count, compost them.

How thick and how big are they?

25 microns and 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 in). That is thicker than most compostable bags, which is why they do not tear on the perforation or in the hand, and big enough that a large dog's pickup ties off with room to spare. One size for every dog.

    Do they fit my dispenser?

Yes. Standard rolls of 15 on a cardboard core, so they fit every standard dispenser, including the Explorer Dual Pocket Pouch, which holds two rolls plus treats, keys and cards.

How long will a pack last, and how should I store it?

One dog at two or three pickups a day: 150 bags is about two months, 300 about four, 450 about six, 600 about eight. Two dogs, halve it. Store the box cool and dry and use it within a year: plant-based film is made to break down, and heat and damp start that early. A box in a hot car boot is the wrong place for it.

Are they scented? Do they hide the smell?

Unscented, on purpose. Perfumed bags cover nothing and some dogs dislike the smell on the hand that feeds them. A 25 micron bag tied off properly holds odour in on the walk; the Explorer Dual Pocket Pouch carries the tied bag until the next bin.

What if the box arrives damaged or a roll is faulty?

Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice, with a photo and your order number. Telling us in the first week helps us claim against the carrier, but it is not a cut-off. Damaged or faulty rolls are replaced or refunded, and we cover any return shipping.
