  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 We're looking at the Furry Corduroy puppy handbag. So, look, the Furry Corduroy range—you know, it's with all the beds. There's a whole bed range with it as well. So, it was nice. They come in brown, like a pale pink, a straight cream/beige or whatever—it's got like a slight pink hue to it. And then we've got gray and white.
  3. 0:29 So look, let's go through them all. The brown one, each of them do have slightly different straps to kind of match the color. What do you get? So look, this is the kind of the shoulder strap. It's got, you know, kind of like standard dog lead clips. This just clips on, you know. You've got two hooks. You've got a hook on one side and a hook that kind of goes across to the other side. 360° swivel. There you go, that's the handbag. That's with the shoulder strap hooks. Let's get rid of that. It is adjustable, which means you can easily adjust it. So, not too bad.
  4. 1:02 So, if you're just carrying your dog or cat as a handbag, it's fine. But so, if you have a handbag and you have an animal in it, wouldn't you be asking, "Wouldn't it be able to jump out?" No. So, you put a harness on them. I prefer it rather than a collar, because a collar—if they do jump out of this, you know, it's going to hang on their neck. A bit of a harness is going to hold them down better. And there is a tiny little clip here for your cat or dog—360° swivel—but this will clip to their harness. So, you can clip it to a collar.
  5. 1:28 You do also have here—this is meant to be a seat belt clip. So, you're being able to kind of loop around your seat belt when you're sitting in the car. You can get these ones that have—it's just a loop of a seat belt material fabric and they usually have a clip. But this can hook on that. So, if you want this to be able to stay in the car, it does hook on a normal seat belt. So, it will go over the side and you can put a normal seat belt thing in there. But there are pet ones as well that have a loop, and it's probably going to fit—it will fit this one a bit better because that's how I designed it.
  6. 1:58 Anyway, that's to hold them in for a seat belt. So, you do have a loop here in case you want to hang anything in there, too.
  7. 2:04 And it does come with a—it's got a plastic base with memory foam padding on top. Well, it's not memory foam. It's kind of like high-density foam, but I would say it's not memory foam. So, this one has a metal zipper. You can remove the foam out. It's also got the plastic board there. You can take this out. If your pet gets diarrhea, look, that's the plastic board on the bottom. You've got, you know, the foam on top—not memory foam. You can wash this. It's 30° max at low spin cycle. That's the one that is machine washable. This is not machine washable, unfortunately. It's only wipeable because there's too much other fabric and stitching. You can't remove the inner fabric—or sorry, the inner filling material, which is just like filter floss material.
  8. 2:52 So, yeah. And it does come with kind of like—this is grippy dots on the bottom. Does actually work kind of okay in the car. Like it'll stick to leather, or most people have leather or fake leather in their car now anyway. But yeah, look, it is easy to just clip it into the car.
  9. 3:06 Oh, the one thing I didn't say is these could probably fit up to like 10 kilos. If you can carry a 10 kilo dog in one of these... Like, I would say the majority of people that would buy these probably are not going to be walking around with a, you know, a huge dog in there or cat anyway.

How it works

Why the walls, why the clip, and what it is not

Illustrated golden retriever puppy sitting up in a pale pink WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier, its head over the padded rim

Walls that stand up and a base that does not sag

Most soft carriers are a sack with handles: the dog sinks to the bottom, the sides fold over its head, and it rides with its spine bent.

  • Built like a small bed with handlesThe walls are padded with a soft filling and hold their shape on their own.
  • Firm baseThe base is a firm insert under a removable pad.
  • A rim at chin heightThe rim sits at about 25 cm, which is chin height for a toy breed sitting up: the dog sits on a flat floor, looks over the edge, and can drop its head on the rim when it has seen enough.
  • A corduroy outside and a faux-fur liningThe outside is the same plush wide-wale corduroy as the Furry Corduroy Round Bed; the inside is faux fur. One size, 47 x 33 x 25 cm outside, for puppies and small dogs to 8 kg, which is a Chihuahua to a Cavalier and a cocker spaniel puppy that will grow out of it.

The clip inside: for the harness, because small dogs jump

A toy breed that jumps from a bag at hip height onto tiles can break a foreleg.

  • One of the commonest fractures I seeIt is one of the commonest fractures I see in dogs under five kilos, and it happens in the two seconds someone looks at their phone.
  • Harness clip insideInside the bag is a short tether with a clip.
  • Clip it to the back of a harness, not to a collarA dog that goes over the side on a collar clip hangs by its neck, on a harness clip it dangles by its chest until you lift it back in, annoyed and unhurt.
  • Treat the bag as a bed with handlesPut it on the floor at the café, on the vet's waiting-room bench, on your lap on the tram, and the dog stays in its own place with a clip that means it cannot make the mistake.

What it is not: a car restraint, a cat carrier, or a treatment

Three things before you buy.

  • First, the carThis is a tote, and nothing about it holds a dog in a crash. In the car the dog wears a harness clipped to the seatbelt, or rides in a crate, and the bag can sit on the seat as the bed it sits in; an unrestrained five-kilo dog in a fifty-kilometre stop is a projectile, and an airbag does the rest.
  • Second, catsA placid cat that has grown up in this bag may ride in it at home, but a cat going to the vet goes in a closed carrier, because an open tote in a car park and a frightened cat is a cat under a car.
  • Third, calmingA bag that lives at home as a bed becomes a familiar place, and a familiar place in a strange room is real and worth having; it is not a treatment for a dog that panics.

Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier size guide: which dogs fit

    Small

    Puppies and small dogs to 8 kgUp to 18 lb · 47 x 33 x 25 cm / 19 x 13 x 10 in

    • Chihuahua
    • Toy Poodle
    • Pomeranian
    • Maltese
    • Yorkie

Three sizing rules

  • One size, 47 x 33 x 25 cm outside. Measure the dog curled up, nose to tail: under about 35 cm sits inside the walls with room to turn. The limit is 8 kg: a Chihuahua, a toy poodle, a Pomeranian, a Maltese, a Yorkie or a mini dachshund for life; a Cavalier at the top of it; a cocker, a cavoodle or a beagle only as a puppy.

  • A puppy grows out of it. A cocker spaniel or a cavoodle fits at ten weeks and not at ten months, so buy it for the puppy months if that is the plan, when a carrier is how a puppy sees the world before its vaccinations are finished and its paws can go on the ground; afterwards it stays a bed at home. Weigh the dog before you buy, and weigh the bag with the dog in it against your shoulder: 8 kg plus the bag is a long walk.

  • It is a carrier for a dog that is carried: the café, the shops, the tram, the vet's waiting room, a friend's house. In the car the dog wears the Explorer Harness clipped to the seatbelt, or rides in a crate, and the bag is the bed on the seat, not the restraint. Cats go to the vet in a closed carrier. For hands-free carrying of the same dog, the Furry Range Puppy Pouch is the front pack.

How to

How to fit it, use it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy sitting on a scale, and the same puppy curled up asleep inside a white WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier

Check the weight and the curl

Under 8 kg on the scales, and under about 35 cm curled up nose to tail. A puppy that fits today grows out of it; that is fine, it becomes the bed.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy peering over the rim of a white WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier at a treat on its base pad

    Make it the bed first

Leave it on the floor at home for a week with the pad in and a treat in it before it goes anywhere. A dog that chooses it at home settles in it at the café; a dog that meets it in the car park does not.

  • Illustrated man lifting a white WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier by its handles, a golden retriever puppy in a purple harness inside

Clip the harness, never the collar

Harness on, clip to the back D-ring, then lift. A dog that goes over the side on a collar hangs by its neck; on a harness it dangles and you lift it back. Keep a hand near the rim on stairs and escalators.

  • Illustrated woman carrying a white WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier at her side, a puppy looking out over the rim

Carry it; do not drive with it

In your hand, on your forearm, on the floor at the café, on your lap on the tram. In the car the dog wears a harness on the seatbelt or rides in a crate, and the bag is the bed on the seat.

  • Illustrated woman brushing the fur lining of a brown WOOPF™ Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier, a golden retriever puppy sitting beside her

Wash the pad, brush the fur, watch the heat

Pad out and into the machine cold on a gentle cycle, air dry; brush the fur weekly. A fur-lined bag is warm: on a hot day, or in a warm café, watch for panting and take the dog out. Never leave a dog in a bag in a parked car.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A carrier is a familiar place, not a treatment. The car: this bag does not restrain anything in a crash; the dog wears a harness clipped to the seatbelt or rides in a crate, and the bag is the bed it sits in. Falls: a toy breed that jumps from hip height onto a hard floor can fracture a foreleg, so the clip goes on a harness every time and a collar clip is never used, because a dog that goes over the side on a collar hangs by its neck. Cats: an open tote is not a cat carrier for the vet or the car; a frightened cat leaves it in one movement, and a closed carrier is the only safe transport for a cat. Never leave a dog in a bag in a parked car. Puppies: a carrier is a good way to take a puppy into the world before its vaccinations are complete, with its paws off the ground; keep it away from unknown dogs' noses and from the floor of the vet clinic until the course is finished. Weight: the 8 kg is the bag's limit; a dog over it sits in a sagging base with the walls folding in. Toddlers: a bag with a dog in it is not a toy, and a small dog cornered in a bag bites. Heat: a fur-lined bag against your body on a hot day, or in a warm café, is warm; heavy panting that does not settle, drooling or a limp dog is heatstroke, and the dog comes out, gets cool water and goes to a vet.

Why I designed it

A handbag with a dog in it, done properly.

The small dogs that arrive at my consult room calm are the ones carried in something that already smells like home. That is the whole idea here.

  • It is a tote, not a cratePadded walls that stand up on their own, a firm base so the dog is sitting on something rather than hanging in fabric, a clip inside for the harness.
  • The same corduroy and fur as the round bedIf it lives on the floor at home for a week before it goes anywhere, the dog treats being picked up in it as being picked up in its bed.
  • A rim for their chinHandles for your hand, a rim for their chin, a pad that goes in the machine.
  • The honest linesIt is not a car restraint: in the car the dog wears a harness clipped to the seatbelt or rides in a crate, and this bag is the bed it sits in, not the thing that holds it in a crash.
  • Clip the harness, never the collarA dog that jumps from a bag hangs by whatever you clipped.
  • It is not a cat carrier for the vetAn open tote and a frightened cat is a cat under a car. And calming here means familiar, which is real and is not a treatment. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

Which dogs fit, and will my puppy grow out of it?

One size, 47 x 33 x 25 cm outside, for puppies and small dogs to 8 kg. Measure the dog curled up, nose to tail: under about 35 cm sits inside the walls with room to turn, which is a Chihuahua, a toy poodle, a Pomeranian, a Maltese, a Yorkie or a mini dachshund for life and a Cavalier at the top of the limit. A cocker spaniel, a cavoodle or a beagle fits as a puppy and not as an adult; buy it for the puppy months, when a carrier is how a puppy sees the world before its vaccinations are finished, and it stays a bed at home afterwards.

Is it safe in the car?

As a bed on the seat, yes; as a restraint, no. Nothing about a tote holds a dog in a crash, and an unrestrained five-kilo dog in a sudden stop is a projectile. In the car the dog wears a harness clipped to the seatbelt, the Explorer Harness does that, or rides in a crate; the bag can sit on the seat as the familiar place the dog sits in while the harness does the holding. Never on the front seat with an airbag, and never left in a parked car.

Do I clip the collar or the harness?

The harness, every time. The clip inside the bag is there because a toy breed that jumps from hip height onto tiles can break a foreleg, one of the commonest fractures in dogs under five kilos. Clipped to the back of a harness, a dog that goes over the side dangles by its chest until you lift it back in; clipped to a collar, it hangs by its neck.

Can I use it for my cat?

At home, if the cat has chosen it as a bed, it is a bed. For the vet or the car, no: an open tote and a frightened cat is a cat gone in one movement, in a car park, next to a road. Cats travel in a closed carrier with a door that latches, and the kindest version is one that lives in the living room with a blanket in it so it is not a once-a-year box.

Will it calm my anxious dog?

In one real way: a bag that has lived at home as a bed for a week is a familiar place, and a familiar place in a strange room, a waiting room or a café is worth having; the dog is sitting in something that smells of home, up off the floor, with your hand on the rim. That is not a treatment. A dog that panics in the car, or shakes and drools at the vet, has a fear that needs a plan with your vet, sometimes medication before visits, and a bag will not fix it.

    How do I wash it?

The base pad comes out and goes in the machine cold on a gentle cycle, no softener, air dry; do that fortnightly and the same day after an accident. The bag itself: spot clean the fur with a damp cloth, brush it weekly with a slicker to lift the hair and stand the pile back up, and keep heat away from it. A wet bag is not a bed until it is dry.

What if it is the wrong size, or it arrives damaged?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size: returns are considered within 14 days on unused items in their original packaging, so weigh the dog and measure it curled before you order rather than after.
