  1. 0:06 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:17 What I have here today are snuffle balls. These are probably one of my biggest sellers. These are made from fabric. They do have plastic cable ties in the center that holds all the folds of fabric together.
  3. 0:23 They're made of polar fleece material. I am looking at different materials that I can use to make these tougher. These are really good as a slow feeder putting food and treats in.
  4. 0:32 They don't hold the treats, you know, food and treats like super well because that's the point. You want them to kind of push the toy around and knock and nuzzle the food and treats out. I wouldn't say this is like a slow feeder for a whole meal.
  5. 0:46 This is more like you're putting a few treats in there and making it difficult for your dog to, you know, or cat to snuffle the food out.
  6. 0:53 Let's go through the benefits of these. So, it's the same as the slow feeder mats or the snuffle mats. Your dog's going to take time to find the food. It gives them some brain training. It's not the physical exercise that kind of tires them out.
  7. 1:05 It's, you know, but say you're having to study for math. If I do that for several hours, I'm going to get tired. I'm not going to be sleepy as in wanting to fall asleep, but I'm going to be tired as in exhausted just from the brain train.
  8. 1:16 That's what these are. These are more kind of for brain training, getting them to use their nose and senses rather than see with their eyes and eat something straight away. They have to find it using something else.
  9. 1:26 So another sensory system which is, you know, the touch of their nose, their whiskers, being able to smell the treats. That's the whole point of these. That's why they exhaust them more.
  10. 1:36 And it also gives them, you know, it gives them a sense of satisfaction being able to sniff something and then find it. So they get that dopamine response when they get it rather than a bowl of food, they eat it straight away and then they go want more snacks. So it also gives them something else to do.
  11. 1:46 These come in two different sizes. So we've got medium, which is 15 cm diameter, and large, which is 20 cm diameter.
  12. 1:52 The difference between my product and kind of cheaper ones is that I try and fit in as many folds in this as possible.
  13. 2:00 So, you're getting more fabric. More fabric means that it's a little bit tighter and you're able to put more treats in there rather than less fabric. The treats obviously tend to fall out a bit more because, you know, everything's not as bunched together as much.
  14. 2:10 You can put these in the washing machine. I have put them in the washing machine and the dryer. The dryer, they tend to kind of stick fur and things like that to it, but the washing machine's great.
  15. 2:17 And then I just hang them out because when you use the dryer, it dries the outside of the ball, but then the center still stays moist or wet. So I would still hang these out in the sun and they'll dry much better there, or if you have like a drying kind of box or something at home.
  16. 2:30 In future, I am looking to use different fabrics. I'm also trying to look at different ways to make the center a bit stronger.
  17. 2:37 Anyway, it comes in a bunch of different colors. So we've got pink, purple, blue, black or black and gray. The green's got a bit of brown in there. Then you've got red, rainbow, and well, these are bumblebee.
  18. 2:50 And then these will match with the snuffle mats. So if people want to buy sets, that's the whole reason of having, you know, all different colors. People can match them with different things.
  19. 2:58 Let's put them together because I've got, I've got them in front of me anyway, so when I bring out other mats, we can make some color combinations. But here you go. These are the snuffle balls. Thank you. Let's go to the next ones.

How it works

Why the Snuffle Ball is the snuffle toy to start with

Illustrated golden retriever puppy nosing kibble out of a green WOOPF™ Snuffle Ball

The food stays in until the nose does the work

Dozens of overlapping fleece petals hold the kibble deep in the folds, so it has to be found and nosed out one piece at a time.

  • Stays full when it rollsThe food doesn’t spill out, so the game keeps going.
  • Easy or hard, you choosePack it loosely for a beginner, or bury the food for a dog that knows the game.
  • Ten to thirty minutes of sniffingSessions run anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour.
  • Slows a fast eaterFeed dinner from it, no special bowl needed.
Illustrated owner reading quietly in an armchair while his golden retriever sniffs a Snuffle Ball

Quiet on purpose

There’s no crackle layer inside, so it makes no noise. That’s the point of this version.

  • Quiet enough for a work callWorks in a thin-walled flat or at ten at night.
  • The quieter choice for a nervous dogNo crinkle sound to startle them.
  • Nothing inside but fleeceNo plastic film inside the ball.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A torn petal is still a foreign body, so the ball comes out of the room when the food is gone.

Three sizing rules

  • Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg and for cats. Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg and for homes with more than one dog, used one dog at a time.

  • Too big to carry is the point. A ball your dog can pick up and parade around becomes a chew toy; if they carry the Medium, get the Large.

  • Not for fabric shredders of any size. A dog that tears soft toys apart needs a rubber treat toy such as the Chewster Blocky Bone, not a snuffle ball.

How to

How to use a snuffle ball

  • Illustrated owner placing treats on top of a green Snuffle Ball while a golden retriever puppy watches

    Start easy

First session, leave a few smelly treats sitting on top of the folds and let your dog watch you put them there. The point is a quick win, not a puzzle.

  • Illustrated owner tucking kibble deep into a green Snuffle Ball while a golden retriever puppy watches

    Bury it deeper

Once your dog gets the game, push kibble down into the folds and roll the ball between your hands. Feed a whole meal this way if you like; most dogs are busy for 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Illustrated owner sitting beside a golden retriever puppy while it noses a green Snuffle Ball

    Stay in the room

It is fleece, not a chew toy. Watch the session, and pick the ball up as soon as the food is gone, before sniffing turns into chewing.

  • Illustrated owner reading in an armchair while his golden retriever sniffs a Snuffle Ball

    Use it on purpose

Ten minutes before you leave the house, after a walk when the zoomies start, during storms, fireworks or visitors, and during the calls you cannot be interrupted on. Sniffing brings arousal down; save it for the moments you need that.

  • Illustrated owner loading a green Snuffle Ball into a washing machine

    Wash it weekly

Shake out the crumbs, cold gentle cycle, air dry. A ball that smells of old kibble is a ball that gets chewed.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

This is a foraging toy, not a chew toy. There is no plastic layer inside, but swallowed fleece is still a foreign body, so supervise every session, remove the ball once the food is gone, and retire it if the petals start to tear. Whatever goes in the ball comes out of the day's food allowance. In a multi-dog home, give it to one dog at a time in a separate room: a food puzzle is exactly the kind of thing dogs guard from each other. Sniffing settles most dogs; it does not treat separation anxiety, and a dog that panics when left needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, with the ball as one part of it.

Why I designed it

Nose work is the cheapest calm you can buy. This is the ball I hand people first.

Nose work settles a busy dog faster than exercise alone. This is the plain version on purpose.

  • A dog’s brain runs on its noseTen minutes of proper sniffing brings a wound-up dog down in a way another lap of the block does not.
  • Thirty seconds becomes twenty minutesThe same kibble pushed into the folds is twenty minutes of a dog doing what it was built to do.
  • Plain and quiet on purposeNo crackle layer, so it works on a call or while the baby sleeps, and a torn petal is fleece, not plastic.
  • Eight colours, made for your floorIt lives in your home, so you shouldn’t have to hide it in a cupboard.
  • A foraging toy, not a chew toyA dog that shreds fabric gets a Blocky Bone instead. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    • I work from home and this snuffle ball is a lifesaver! When I have to jump on a call and need to keep my dog busy, I can load this up with treats and he is totally content. I love that it’s a quiet toy and keeps him mentally stimulated!

    • My dog has hyperactivity, and I've finally found a toy that he can use to expend his energy, so he won't destroy the house anymore.

Snuffle Ball or Snuffle Ball With Crackles: which one?

Start with this one. It is the plain fleece ball: quiet, nothing inside but fleece, eight colours, and the lower price of the two. The Snuffle Ball With Crackles is the same ball with a crinkle layer sewn inside, which rustles when the nose pushes in; it is for the dog that sniffs a plain snuffle toy once and walks away, and for owners who do not mind the noise. If you are not sure, the quiet one first; if your dog loses interest in a week, the Crackles is the upgrade.

    Which size should I buy?

Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg and for cats. Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg. The ball should be too big for your dog to pick up and carry; if they can parade around with the Medium, you want the Large. Between sizes, go up.

What do I put in it?

Kibble is the everyday answer, so the ball replaces the bowl rather than adding calories. Dry training treats, freeze-dried meat and broken biscuits work for a harder search. Nothing wet, greasy or sticky; it soaks into the fleece and goes off.

How long will it keep my dog busy?

Ten minutes for a beginner with treats sitting on top, 15 to 30 minutes for a meal packed into the folds, longer for a dog that has learnt to work every layer. Pack it harder as your dog gets better, and stop while they are still winning.

Is a snuffle ball good for anxious dogs?

Sniffing and foraging are the fastest ways I know to bring a dog's arousal down, which is why this works before you leave the house, during storms and after an over-excited walk, and the quiet version is the one for a dog that startles at noise. It is a tool, not a treatment: a dog with true separation anxiety needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, and the ball becomes one part of it.

Can I leave my dog alone with it?

No. It is fleece. Watch the session, take the ball away when the food is gone, and give a fabric shredder a rubber toy such as the Chewster Blocky Bone instead. Most torn snuffle balls are torn after the food ran out and nobody picked them up.

Can cats and other pets use it?

Yes. The Medium suits cats and rabbits, with the same rule of supervising and removing it once the food is gone. Cats often prefer a few pieces sitting on top rather than buried. For a cat-specific enrichment range, see PURRZ™.

What if it arrives damaged, I picked the wrong colour, or my dog destroys it?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong colour or size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. Shredded by an enthusiastic dog: that is the wrong toy for that dog, and the Chewster Blocky Bone is the right one.
