Dr Duncan explains the Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers

Read the script
  1. 0:05 G'day, I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 Here is the calming shag range of beds. These are the round beds. Very explanatory—the reason why there's "calming" in there, lots of other brands have this "calming" because of this shag material.
  3. 0:23 It got really heavily marketed by one company, which really pushed it, and I guess it caught on for, you know, people marketing it and other brands.
  4. 0:30 For dogs that are anxious, that kind of want to hide away and tuck their face in, then yeah, cool. That's why it's called the calming range.
  5. 0:36 So this one technically only comes in two sizes. So the shag calming range will come in a medium size and a large size.
  6. 0:44 But we do have a small size, but it only comes in small with the deer antlers. So I really liked this because it was really cute. I liked the deer antlers, but anyway.
  7. 0:55 This one is not machine washable. The cover cannot come off on this one because it has these deer antlers attached. These are not washable.
  8. 1:03 So this is the small size, one colour, but this is a separate product to these ones because it's got the deer antlers on it. It's technically not the same.
  9. 1:11 Anyway, so let's go to the other ones. That one's brown, by the way.
  10. 1:14 They come in white, cream and brown. You've got three colours and two different sizes.
  11. 1:20 This one will fit pretty much a maximum of up to, like, a 15-kilo dog, and then the large size is up to 30 kilos.
  12. 1:26 So the large size is roughly 15- to 30-kilo dogs, and this one is kind of, you know, tiny dogs to 15 kilos.
  13. 1:33 I would say that small bed is kind of five or six kilos max. So maybe this is five to 10 kilos.
  14. 1:38 So, really soft material. You've got a really nice kind of cushioned inner bit. This is made out of, like, a flame-retardant material. It's not memory foam.
  15. 1:46 It does have the grippy dots on the bottom. So these grippy dots are really good for wooden floors, tiles, flat surfaces, but, you know, not too grippy for carpet.
  16. 1:55 But the longer this stuff sticks to the same place on a floor, the better it grips.
  17. 1:59 This is the flame-retardant fluffy material. This is not machine washable, this part, but I would say that you can still hand wash it, cold hand wash it, and put it in the sun to dry out.
  18. 2:09 You've got an elastic Velcro cover bit here that covers and does hold the zipper, because the zipper connection—you do pop the zipper open on this bit, and then you pull out the donut bolster.
  19. 2:21 So bolster or wall, again, this is cold hand wash, put in the sun.
  20. 2:26 This part is machine washable. So it is cold machine wash, but it is machine washable, and this is the fabric cover.
  21. 2:33 Super easy to put back together, you know, once it's nice and dry and fluffy, and it's all warm from being out in the sun.
  22. 2:38 It's also got a nice leather tag. They smell really good at the moment, as they're new.
  23. 2:41 And yeah, it's just our standard range, and they're really good quality. So yeah, anyway.

How it works

The small ring, what self-warming means, and the three things it is not

Illustrated golden retriever puppy curled up in the well of a WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers, its chin on the padded rim, two brown plush antlers on the outside of the ring

The small ring: 55 cm, for the animals that curl tightest

A cat, a kitten, a puppy or a toy-breed dog sleeps in a ball with its back against something, and a 55 cm ring is the right size for that: a wall on every side, a rim at chin height, and a well that is small enough to feel enclosed rather than lost in. That is the size for pets to about 5 kg curled up; a bigger small dog, a Cavalier or a Frenchie, wants the plain shag bed in Medium. The antlers are two soft plush shapes sewn to the back of the rim. They do nothing, they are lovely, and they are the first thing a teething puppy will try, so check the stitching now and then and take the bed away from a dog that is eating them.

Self-warming means their own heat, kept

Small animals lose heat faster than big ones, which is why a chihuahua shivers in a room a labrador finds warm and why a kitten climbs into the laundry basket. There is nothing to plug in here. A long pile traps a layer of still air around the animal, like a blanket over a basket, and a curled body in a small ring loses less heat than one stretched out flat, so the bed is still warm when they climb back in. The other side of that is summer: a long pile is too much for most pets in a hot room, and they will tell you by sleeping on the tiles. Put it away till autumn, and shake it outside weekly, because a long pile holds hair.

What it is not: machine washable, orthopedic, or a treatment

Three honest lines. Spot clean, and not machine washable: the cover cannot come off, because the antlers are attached. Treat it as a bed you sponge, which means a puppy or a kitten still having accidents needs a washable blanket in the well, and the washable bed when they grow. There is no foam in it: an old small dog with stiff hips belongs on the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed or the NÄP Vet Orthopedic Bed, which put foam under the joints. And calming is a shape a nervous animal tucks itself into, not a treatment; a dog that paces, trembles, hides or cannot settle needs a vet and a plan, and the vet note below says how to tell.

Three sizing rules

  • One size, 55 x 55 x 16 cm. Measure your pet curled up the way they sleep, nose round to tail: under about 35 cm fits with room to turn; over that, buy the plain Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed in Medium (76.5 cm).

  • Dogs and cats to 5 kg: a 55 cm ring does not take a 10 kg dog curled. Cats of any ordinary size fit. Kittens and puppies fit now and grow out of it, which is fine for a bed at this price if the next one is planned.

  • A pet that sleeps stretched out, or a small dog past eight with stiff hips, wants a different bed: a flat one for the stretcher, and the SNÖR or the NÄP for the joints, because there is no foam in this one.

How to

How to place it, check it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy curled up in a Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers on the corner of a lilac sofa, a man sitting beside it

Put it where they already sleep

On the couch corner they have claimed, at the end of the bed, or in the crate, against a wall. A small curler wants a back to the wall and something to see out of.

  • Illustrated man laying a lilac T-shirt in the well of a Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers as a golden retriever puppy sniffs it

    Let them find it

A worn T-shirt or their blanket in the well for the first few nights. Do not lift a pet into a bed; a pet put into a bed gets out of it.

  • Illustrated man checking where a brown plush antler is sewn to the rim of a Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers, a golden retriever puppy watching

    Check the antlers

Once a week, run a thumb round where they are sewn to the rim. A loose thread on a plush antler is a chew toy to a puppy and a swallowed fibre to you.

  • Illustrated man shaking the hair out of a Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers while a golden retriever puppy watches

    Spot clean, shake, brush

Sponge marks with cold water and a little pet-safe detergent, blot, and air it. Shake it outside weekly and brush the pile up with a rubber glove. No hot water and no dryer: heat mats a shag pile.

  • Illustrated man packing a Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed with Antlers into a clear storage bag while a golden retriever puppy lies on the cool tiles

    Put it away in summer

When they start sleeping on the tiles, shake it, air it and bag it. It is the winter bed, and a kitten or a puppy may have grown out of it by the time it comes back out.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A bed is comfort, not treatment. A nervous small dog or cat will use a ring to tuck itself away, and that is a good thing to give it, but a pet that paces, trembles, hides, drools, will not eat or cannot settle at night has anxiety that a bed cannot fix; that is a conversation with your vet about training, environment and, sometimes, medication, and the earlier the better. This bed has no foam in it. A small dog past eight that is stiff after rest, reluctant to jump or licking at one joint needs a veterinary examination and, usually, an orthopedic bed. Heat: a long pile is warm, which is the point for a small pet in winter and a risk in a hot room for a flat-faced dog, a Persian cat or an overweight pet; if they pant on it, move it or put it away. Chewers: plush antlers are a chew toy to a teething puppy, and swallowed fibre and fill can block a small gut, so supervise, check the stitching weekly and take the bed away from a pet that is eating it. Accidents: sponge them straight away; urine left in a long pile is a skin problem within a day or two, and a bed you cannot machine wash is the wrong bed for a pet still having them.

Why I designed it

Yes, it has antlers. Under them it is a proper small round bed, with the same rules.

A small dog is allowed a silly bed, and so is the person who buys it: this is the one people send as a present.

  • The small version of the shag ringUnder the antlers it is the small version of the shag ring, 55 cm across, for the animals that lose heat fastest and curl tightest: cats, kittens, puppies, and the toy breeds that spend winter under a blanket on your lap.
  • A padded rim for the chinA padded rim for the chin, a long pile that keeps their own warmth in, nothing to plug in.
  • Two plush shapes sewn to the rimThe antlers are two plush shapes sewn to the rim; they do nothing except make people smile, and a puppy will go for them first, so watch that.
  • The honest linesNow the honest lines, the same ones I put on the big version. Calming is a shape, not a medicine: a dog that paces or trembles needs a vet, not a fluffier bed.
  • No foam in itThere is no foam in it, so it is not an orthopedic bed.
  • A washable blanket in the wellAnd it is spot clean, so for a puppy or a kitten still having accidents, put a washable blanket in the well and buy the washable bed when they grow. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    Which pets does it fit?

Cats of any ordinary size, kittens, puppies, and dogs to about 5 kg curled up: a Chihuahua, a Toy Poodle, a Pomeranian, a Maltese, a Yorkie. Measure your pet curled, nose round to tail; under about 35 cm fits with room to turn. A 55 cm ring does not take a 10 kg dog curled, so trust the tape measure. A Cavalier, a Frenchie or anything over 5 kg wants the Fluffy Shag Calming Round Bed in Medium.

Are the antlers safe? My puppy chews everything.

They are soft plush shapes sewn to the rim. Soft is not the same as chew-proof: a teething puppy will go for them first, and swallowed plush and fill can block a small gut. Check the stitching weekly, and if your puppy is eating them rather than sleeping against them, take the bed away until the chewing phase passes.

    Can I wash it?

Spot clean. It is not machine washable, and the cover cannot come off, because the antlers are attached. Sponge marks with cold water and a little pet-safe detergent, blot, air it, shake it outside weekly and brush the pile up. For a puppy or kitten still having accidents, put a washable blanket in the well, or buy the plain shag bed, whose cover comes off for the machine.

    Is it really self-warming?

In the plain sense, yes: the long pile traps still air and keeps your pet's own body heat in, the way a blanket over a basket does, and small animals feel that more than big ones because they lose heat faster. There is no heating element, no insert and no special fibre. It makes this the winter bed, and the one to put away when your pet starts sleeping on the tiles.

Will it calm my anxious dog?

It gives a nervous small dog or cat a ring to tuck into, which is what they are looking for when they sleep under the bed or behind the couch. That is worth having, and it is all it is. A pet that paces, trembles, hides, will not eat or cannot settle at night has anxiety that needs a vet and a plan, sometimes medication, and the sooner that conversation happens the better.

    Is it orthopedic?

No. There is no memory foam in it; the ring and the well are soft fibre fill. For a healthy small pet that sleeps curled, that is fine. For a small dog past eight with stiff hips, or any dog after surgery, buy the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, which is the low sofa for small dogs, or the NÄP Vet Orthopedic Bed, which is the nest with foam under the fur.

    Is it cream or brown?

The colour is called Cream. It is a warm taupe pile, darker than the cream of the plain shag bed, with dark brown antlers. If you need it to match the cream shag bed exactly, email hello@woopf.com and ask before you order.

What if it arrives damaged, or my pet is too big for it?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A bed a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure the curled-up pet against the 35 cm rule before you order rather than after.
