  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 What we have here, we have the, you know, the WOOPF™ puppy pouch. Pretty much it's not a backpack, it's a front pack. That's how I kind of describe it.
  3. 0:20 This is the perfect pouch to have your cat or small dog in. You can keep them at the front so you can actually see them as you're walking around.
  4. 0:26 You can parade them in this very nice fancy fabric. You know, I'll say that again. Very nice fancy fabric. It's like a real, you know, soft wool.
  5. 0:36 Anyway, I like carrying Gary around in this. So, you know, it's very, yeah. So, Gary the cat can go in here.
  6. 0:44 I've got pockets to keep my hands warm and also just fiddle with Gary or fiddle with the dog or puppy or whatever is in there.
  7. 0:50 You do have a cord here. So if you have a cat or a dog that might escape, you can kind of pull this tight so it goes around their shoulders. Don't choke them, but, you know, it goes in there.
  8. 1:00 You've got a nice base to stick in the bottom, so, you know, they've got a bit of support if they want to, I guess, stand up or whatever. You know, they just feel like their butt's supported.
  9. 1:08 You can adjust the straps. You can also unclip the straps. So, if you want to drop them from the front, unclip can go down like this.
  10. 1:15 So, yeah, you've got it in brown and you've also got it in gray. You've got nice breathable fabric on the back.
  11. 1:20 These are quite good clips. I would say you're probably pushing it at about a 10-kilo animal in one of these.
  12. 1:26 They're nice and fluffy, really soft. You know, the material is really nice. You've got my leather logo right here.
  13. 1:33 And then up here, you've got a drawstring to be able to tighten the top part, just in case you've got a dog or a cat that might be able to sneak out. And then you've got the hand pockets here.
  14. 1:42 So, there you go. This is my Gary carry for winter: the WOOPF™ puppy pouch. It's pretty nice. All right, cool.

How it works

Why a pouch, how it is built, and what it is not

Illustrated man wearing a brown WOOPF™ Furry Range Puppy Pouch on his chest, a golden retriever puppy looking out at the treat in his hand

Carried, not walked: the puppy months on your chest

The window in which a puppy decides what is normal, roughly three to fourteen weeks, closes before its vaccination course finishes at fourteen to sixteen.

  • Carry, do not groundThe rule every vet gives is carry, do not ground: no paws where unknown dogs have been, but the sights, sounds and smells of the world every day.
  • For more than ten minutesA pouch on your chest is how you do that for more than ten minutes at a time.
  • From a place it trustsThe puppy sits at the height of your heartbeat, sees traffic and prams and buses and cafés and other dogs from a place it trusts, and gets a treat each time something new goes past.
  • The first months, then a bedThe pouch is for the first months and then becomes a bed.
Illustrated woman kneeling beside a brown WOOPF™ Furry Range Puppy Pouch standing on its firm base, a golden retriever puppy looking out over the fur rim

A firm base, a drawstring top and padded straps: a pouch that sits, not a sling that sags

A sling folds a puppy into a curve with its spine bent and its legs pinned. This is a pouch.

  • A firm insert to sit onA fur tub with a removable firm insert in the base, so the puppy sits on a floor with its head and front legs out over the rim, the way it sits in your lap.
  • A drawstring, never at the neckThe top gathers with a drawstring around the chest, snug enough that a wriggler cannot back out and never around the neck.
  • Padded straps, quick-release bucklesThe shoulder straps are padded with quick-release buckles, so the pouch comes on and off without a wrestle.
  • Long-pile fur inside and outLong-pile faux fur outside and in, the same skin as the Furry Range Round Bed.

What it is not: a 10 kg carrier, a car seat, a cat carrier, or a whelping pouch

Four things before you buy.

  • First, the sizeAt 30 x 16 x 30 cm a 10 kg dog does not sit inside it, so this page guides to about 6 kg, a puppy or a toy breed, and a dog that is heavier goes in the Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier, which takes 8.
  • Second, the carA pouch on a person is not a restraint for the dog or the person; in the car the puppy rides in a crate or a puppy harness on the seatbelt.
  • Third, catsA frightened cat leaves an open pouch in one movement, so a cat travels in a closed carrier.
  • Fourth, pregnant dogs and newborn puppiesThis pouch is for a puppy from about eight weeks that has left its mother; a newborn belongs in a whelping box with her, warm, and never on a chest in a fur bag.

Three sizing rules

  • One size, 30 x 16 x 30 cm outside. Measure the puppy sitting: under about 28 cm at the shoulder sits inside with its head and front legs out. By the size, this is a puppy or a toy dog to about 6 kg: a Chihuahua, a Yorkie, a Pomeranian, a Maltese or a toy poodle for life, and a Frenchie, a Cavalier or a cocker only as a puppy.

  • A puppy grows out of it, and that is the plan. A cocker or a cavoodle fits at eight weeks and not at five months; the pouch is for the weeks between coming home and the last vaccination, when a puppy should see the world with its paws off the ground, and it stays a bed at home afterwards. Weigh the puppy weekly and stop using the pouch when the drawstring no longer closes above the shoulders.

  • A dog past 6 kg or past the puppy months goes in the Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier, the hand-carried tote to 8 kg. In the car nothing on a person is a restraint: a crate, or a harness on the seatbelt, the Explorer Harness in its smallest size. Cats go to the vet in a closed carrier.

How to

How to fit it, use it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to point at the reading on a digital scale, a golden retriever puppy sitting on it

Check the weight and the fit

Under about 6 kg and under about 28 cm at the shoulder sitting. A puppy that fits today grows out of it; weigh it weekly and stop when the drawstring will not close above the shoulders.

  • Illustrated woman wearing a brown Furry Range Puppy Pouch on her chest, holding the lead clipped to the harness of the golden retriever puppy inside

    Harness on, then in

Harness first, every time; loop the lead through a shoulder strap. Puppy in with its head and front legs out, drawstring snug around the chest and never around the neck.

  • Illustrated woman sitting in an armchair at home wearing a brown Furry Range Puppy Pouch on her chest, a golden retriever puppy in a harness looking up at her

    Front carry, short first

Ten minutes on the couch at home before the street. On the chest, where you can see the mouth: open-mouthed panting means out and a rest. The back is for a settled small dog on a long walk, not a puppy.

  • Illustrated woman standing by a café table wearing a brown Furry Range Puppy Pouch, offering a treat to the golden retriever puppy inside

    Walk the world past it

Traffic, prams, a bus stop, a café, the vet's waiting room, dogs at a distance, a treat for each. Paws stay off the ground and no unknown dog gets its nose in the pouch until the vaccination course is finished.

  • Illustrated man kneeling to brush the fur of a brown Furry Range Puppy Pouch while a golden retriever puppy sits and watches

Wash the lining, brush the fur

Lining out and washed cold on a gentle cycle, air dry; brush the fur weekly. A fur pouch against your chest is warm, so summer is mornings and evenings, and a puppy comes out the moment it pants.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A pouch is a familiar place and a pair of free hands, not a treatment. Vaccinations: carrying a puppy is how it meets the world before its course is finished; keep its paws off the ground where unknown dogs have been, keep unknown dogs' noses out of the pouch, skip dog parks and the clinic floor, and a puppy that is vomiting, has bloody diarrhoea or will not eat needs a vet the same day. Falls: a wriggler can climb out of a front pouch, and a puppy that falls a metre onto concrete can fracture a foreleg; harness on and the lead through a strap, a hand on the pouch on stairs and escalators, and the drawstring snug around the chest and never around the neck. The car: nothing worn on a person restrains a dog in a crash, and a puppy against your chest is between you and the airbag; in the car the puppy rides in a crate or a harness on the seatbelt. Cats: a frightened cat leaves an open pouch in one movement; a closed carrier for the vet and the car. Newborns: a newborn puppy cannot hold its own temperature and belongs with its mother in a whelping box; it is never carried in a fur bag on a chest. Weight: 6 kg on one pair of shoulders is a long walk; a strap that digs in means the pouch is on the wrong setting or the dog has outgrown it. Heat: a fur pouch against a body is warm and a puppy overheats before an adult; open-mouthed panting that does not settle, drooling or a floppy puppy means out of the pouch, cool water on the belly and a vet.

Why I designed it

For the puppy that cannot walk the streets yet.

A puppy learns what the world is between about three and fourteen weeks old, and its vaccination course does not finish until it is fourteen to sixteen. Every vet tells new owners the same thing: do not put the paws on the ground where other dogs go, but do not keep the puppy in the house either.

  • Carry it. This is the carry.A fur pouch on your chest with a firm base, so the puppy sits up and looks out rather than folding into a sling; a drawstring that gathers around its chest with the head and legs free; straps padded for the length of a real walk; and the Furry Range fur it will already have slept in at home.
  • Seen from your chestTraffic, prams, the bus, the café, the vet's waiting room, dogs at a distance: seen from your chest, at nine weeks, with a treat.
  • The honest linesAt 30 by 16 by 30 centimetres a 10 kg dog does not sit in it, so I say a puppy or a toy dog to about 6. No clip is listed inside, so the harness goes on and the lead loops through a strap. It is warm: mornings and evenings in summer.
  • It is not a car restraintIt is not a car restraint, it is not a cat carrier for the vet, and it has nothing to do with pregnant dogs or newborn puppies; a newborn belongs with its mother in a whelping box. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    Which puppies and dogs fit?

One size, 30 x 16 x 30 cm outside. Measure the puppy sitting: under about 28 cm at the shoulder sits inside with its head and front legs out, which is a Chihuahua, a Yorkie, a Pomeranian, a Maltese or a toy poodle for life, and a Frenchie, a Cavalier or a cocker as a puppy. A 10 kg dog does not sit in a 30 by 16 by 30 pouch, so we guide to about 6 kg. A small dog past that goes in the Corduroy Calming Dog Carrier, the hand-carried tote to 8 kg.

Can I take my puppy out in it before its vaccinations are finished?

Yes, and that is the point of it. The weeks between coming home and the last vaccination are the weeks a puppy decides what is normal, and the rule is carry, do not ground: paws off the pavement and the park where unknown dogs have been, no unknown dog's nose in the pouch, no dog parks and not the clinic floor, but traffic, buses, cafés, prams, people and dogs at a distance every day, with a treat for each. Ten minutes at home first, then short trips, then longer ones. After the last vaccination, the puppy walks and the pouch becomes a bed.

Is there a clip inside, and how do I stop her climbing out?

No clip is listed on this pouch. Harness on before the puppy goes in, the lead looped through a shoulder strap, the drawstring snug around the chest above the shoulders (never around the neck), and a hand on the pouch on stairs. A puppy that keeps trying to climb out is not ready for the street yet; go back to the couch at home with treats until it sits.

Is it safe in the car?

No. Nothing worn on a person restrains a dog in a crash, and a puppy on your chest sits between you and the airbag. In the car the puppy rides in a crate on the back seat, or in a harness clipped to the seatbelt, which the Explorer Harness does in its smallest size once the puppy is big enough for it. Wear the pouch from the car to wherever you are going, not in it.

Is it for pregnant dogs or newborn puppies?

No. A newborn puppy cannot hold its own body temperature, feeds every two hours and belongs with its mother in a whelping box; it is never carried in a fur bag on a chest. A pregnant or nursing dog needs a whelping box, a heat source, a vet and a quiet room, none of which is a pouch. This pouch is for a puppy from about eight weeks that has left its mother, and for toy dogs.

    Will it calm my puppy?

Closeness is real: a puppy against a chest it knows, at the height of a heartbeat, in fur it has slept in at home, settles faster in a new place than a puppy on the ground, and that is why the pouch works for the socialisation weeks. It is not a treatment, and a puppy that screams in it is telling you something: too much too soon, too hot, or not ready. Shorter trips, quieter streets, the pouch on the floor at home as a bed for a week, and if a puppy is fearful of everything by twelve weeks, talk to your vet now rather than at a year.

How do I wash it, and is it hot?

The interior comes out and washes cold on a gentle cycle, no softener, air dry; spot clean the fur with a damp cloth and brush it weekly with a slicker. Yes, it is warm: long fur against your chest with a puppy inside it. In summer that means mornings and evenings, shade, and the puppy out the moment it pants with its mouth open. Never in a parked car.

What if it is the wrong size, or it arrives damaged?

Damaged or faulty on arrival: email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice with a photo and your order number and it is covered. Wrong size: returns are considered within 14 days on unused items in their original packaging, so measure the puppy sitting and weigh it before you order rather than after.
