  1. 0:04 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 All right, right here we have the calming shag sleeping mat. You know, it's a nice rectangle shape. Anyway, this has a dense foam material in it.
  3. 0:20 It's kind of like memory foam, but I wouldn't say—it's got that feeling of memory foam, but I would just say the density is probably not there, you know, in terms of the quality to call it memory foam. It is a relatively nice, dense foam.
  4. 0:33 But anyway, this comes in one size only. It's a mat that would just kind of suit 15 kilos and below for dogs, cats, whatever.
  5. 0:40 The shag material—the reason why it's called calming: there are multiple companies out there that kind of push this calming idea with this material. I would just say it's just a long fur material. So the calming is more of just a marketing purpose.
  6. 0:56 You know, I would say that an open bed like this—technically, a bed is always calming and stuff, but I would say that this isn't specifically like a calming thing apart from, you know, their nose being able to dig and nuzzle.
  7. 1:08 Anyway, it comes in white, cream, and brown. And each of these has, you know, a nice leather logo on it. So, you probably can't see.
  8. 1:17 Again, this is kind of like just a standard rectangular bed. You know, it's not super thick, so I would say probably up to 15 kilos maximum for this bed.
  9. 1:26 And then on the bottom, you've got these dots here. These are the grip dots. They don't work on carpet, but they work on flat floors, so I would say wooden floors, tiles, things like that.
  10. 1:36 And if these stay in the same position for a while and your dog is sleeping on it, that's where the grippy dots work best; over time, they stick better and better. These grippy dots are okay.
  11. 1:47 Like, there's a nice metal zip here. You know, I've made sure with all my manufacturers whatever I make is good quality.
  12. 1:53 So yeah, you can see that the top you can take off; that can go—it's machine washable, but I would say cold wash only and not on the fast cycle.
  13. 2:05 Anyway, this is the material that we're looking at for the foam on the inside. See, it's like an egg crate kind of material.
  14. 2:11 I can actually take it out of this—it's in a waterproof cotton. It's like a cotton waterproof material. So you've got a waterproof sleeve for this bed.
  15. 2:21 You can see it's an egg crate material. They call it egg crate foam. They say it's memory foam. I guess it technically is, but I would just say the density of it, being the egg crate foam—obviously it's lower density because you've got the egg crate foam there.
  16. 2:39 So for dogs that like to kind of stick their nose into everything—that's what nuzzling is—I would say that this bed is quite good. But then again, they can dig in the sides of other beds, so it really just depends.
  17. 2:49 And there you go. Look, I've taken the foam out, I've put it back together. Easy to wash, waterproof cover for the inside, and comes in three colours: white, cream, and brown.

How it works

Why a flat mat, what is under the shag, and which dog needs the sofa instead

Illustrated golden retriever puppy stretched out flat on its side on a cream WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat

Flat, for the dog that sleeps stretched out

Watch how your dog actually sleeps. If it lies on its side with its legs straight and its head flat, a bed with a rim is a bed it will hang out of. A flat mat is the right shape: 90 x 60 cm takes a small or medium dog full length with room to shift, and a cat has it for a runway. The same shape is why it travels. It lies flat on a crate floor (measure the crate: the mat is 90 by 60 and does not fold to fit), flat in a car boot, and flat on the couch or the end of your bed, where it does the job of a throw with a foam base. The three colours are the three living-room colours: Cream, White and a light taupe Brown.

Five centimetres of foam under a shag top

The base is 5 cm support foam, which is what makes this a mat rather than a pad: a dog lying on it is lying on foam, not on a bit of fibre over floorboards. On top, a long shag pile that a dog sinks into slightly and that keeps its own heat in, the way a blanket over a basket does, with nothing plugged in. The cover comes off for a cold machine wash. That is the honest whole of it: a padded, warm, washable flat mat.

What it is not: memory foam, a treatment, or a hair-proof surface

First, 5 cm of support foam is not an orthopedic bed: the SNÜZ sofa has 2 cm of memory foam over 5 cm of support foam and bolsters, the SNÖR is the low version for small and post-op dogs, and the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat is the 8 cm flat mat; an old dog with stiff hips, a big dog or a dog after surgery belongs on one of those. Second, calming is a soft, familiar thing in a strange place, which is worth having in a crate or a car, and it is not a treatment: a dog that panics in either needs training and a vet. Third, a long pile holds hair and shows dirt, and White shows both first; in a busy house buy Cream or the taupe, shake it outside weekly, and wash the cover fortnightly.

Size guide

One size: does my dog fit, and does the crate

Three sizing rules

  • One size, 90 x 60 x 5 cm. Measure your dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail: under about 80 cm fits with room to shift. A cat, or any dog that curls, fits by definition.

  • As a guide, that is cats and dogs to about 15 kg: a Dachshund, a Cavalier, a Frenchie, a Beagle, a Cocker Spaniel. It is a guide from the footprint, not a published limit. A bigger sprawler, or a dog over about 15 kg, wants the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat in Large (104 x 68) or Extra large (118 x 72), which also has the thicker 8 cm foam.

  • For a crate, measure the inside of the floor before you order: the mat is 90 x 60 and a foam mat does not fold to fit. For a car boot, the same. A dog past eight with stiff hips, or any dog after surgery, wants memory foam under it: the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, not a mat.

How to

How to size it, place it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated man measuring the floor of a wire crate with a tape measure

    Measure before you order

The dog stretched out, nose to tail base, under about 80 cm; the crate floor or the boot, at least 90 x 60. A foam mat does not fold to fit a space that is too small.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy asleep on a WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat inside a wire crate

Put it where the dog already sleeps

On the floor beside the couch, in the crate, on the end of the bed. A flat mat works because it goes where the dog is; do not expect a dog to cross a room for it.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy lying on a WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat beside a man in an armchair, a travel bag at his feet

    Take it with you

Into the car boot for the drive, onto the floor at the friend's house or the holiday rental. A familiar mat in a strange place is the whole reason to own a flat one.

  • Illustrated woman shaking the hair off a taupe WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat

Shake it weekly, wash the cover fortnightly

A shake outside and a brush with a rubber glove lift the hair off the pile. Cover off, cold wash, gentle cycle, air dry, brush the pile back up; the foam stays out of the machine.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling beside a golden retriever puppy sitting on a white WOOPF™ Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat

    Watch the weight on it

If the dog's hips touch the floor through the foam, or it gets up stiff, the mat is too thin for that dog now: move to the 8 cm mat or the SNÜZ, and see your vet about the stiffness.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A mat is comfort, not treatment. Five centimetres of support foam is enough to lift a healthy small or medium dog off a hard floor; it is not an orthopedic bed, and a dog that is stiff after rest, reluctant to jump or use stairs, licking at one joint, or limping for more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination and, usually, memory foam under it. A dog that panics in the crate or the car (panting, drooling, pacing, vomiting, scratching to get out) has a fear that a soft mat can make a little easier and cannot fix; that is training, sometimes medication, and a conversation with your vet, and the sooner the better. Heat: a long pile is warm, which is the point in winter and a risk in a hot car or a warm crate for a flat-faced dog, an overweight dog or an old dog; never leave any dog in a parked car, mat or no mat. Chewers: a puppy that eats the pile or the foam can block a gut, so supervise a young dog with any foam mat in a crate. Accidents: get the cover off and washed the same day; urine in a long pile is a skin problem within a day or two, and if it has reached the foam, air the foam fully before the cover goes back on.

Why I designed it

For the dog that sleeps flat out. And the crate, the car and the couch it does it in.

Not every dog curls. Plenty sleep on their side with all four legs straight out, and for that dog a donut is a waste of a rim; what it wants is a flat surface with something under it.

  • A mat and not a padThis is that: 90 by 60, a 5 cm foam base so it is a mat and not a pad, and a long shag top to sink into.
  • The bed that travelsIt is also the bed that travels. It lies flat in a crate, it lies flat in a car boot, and it goes on the couch or the end of your bed so the dog sleeps on it rather than on the upholstery.
  • The honest linesThe base is 5 cm of support foam, which lifts a small or medium dog off a hard floor; it is not the 7 cm of memory foam and support foam in the SNÜZ, and an old dog with worn hips belongs on the SNÜZ or the SNÖR, not on a mat.
  • The winter surfaceThe shag holds heat and hair, so it is the winter surface and it needs a weekly shake.
  • A soft, familiar thingAnd "calming" on a mat means a soft, familiar thing to lie on in a strange place; it does not treat anxiety, and a dog that panics in the car or the crate needs training and a vet, not a fluffier mat. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

Will my dog fit on it?

Measure them lying stretched out on their side, nose to the base of the tail: under about 80 cm fits the 90 x 60 mat with room to shift. As a guide that is cats and dogs to about 15 kg, a Dachshund, a Cavalier, a Frenchie, a Beagle, a Cocker Spaniel. A bigger sprawler wants the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat in Large or Extra large, which is also the thicker foam. A dog that curls fits anything, but a curler is usually happier in a ring.

    Is it orthopedic?

The base is 5 cm of support foam, which is what makes it a mat rather than a pad: enough to lift a healthy small or medium dog off a hard floor. It is not memory foam and we do not call it an orthopedic bed. An old dog with stiff hips, a big dog or a dog after surgery belongs on the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed (2 cm of memory foam over 5 cm of support foam, with bolsters) or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed (the low one), or on the 8 cm Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat if it must be flat.

Does it fit a crate, and which size?

It is 90 x 60 cm and a foam mat does not fold to fit, so measure the inside of the crate floor first: it needs at least 90 x 60. Crates are sold by length in inches and their floors vary by a few centimetres between makers, so the tape measure beats the label. In a crate that is a little too small the mat curls up the sides and the dog lies on a slope; buy the mat that fits the crate, not the dog.

Is it good in the car?

Yes, as a familiar surface: it lies flat in a boot or across a back seat, it is light to lift in and out, and a dog that has slept on it at home settles on it in the car. Two rules. It is not a restraint, so the dog still wears a car harness or travels in a crate. And a long pile is warm: never leave a dog in a parked car, and on a hot day take the mat out and use the bare boot liner.

Will it help my anxious dog?

In one specific way: a soft, familiar thing that smells of home makes a crate or a car or a holiday rental less strange, and that is real. It is not a treatment. A dog that panics in the crate or the car, panting, drooling, pacing, scratching to get out, has a fear that needs training, sometimes medication, and a vet; a fluffier mat will not fix it.

    How do I wash it?

The cover comes off and goes in the machine cold on a gentle cycle, no softener; air dry out of direct sun and brush the pile back up. No tumble dryer and no iron: heat mats a shag pile for good. The foam, which comes out in its own waterproof sleeve, stays out of the machine: air it. Shake the whole mat outside weekly for hair, and wash the cover fortnightly, weekly for a dog with itchy skin.

    Which colour hides the hair?

The one nearest your dog. White shows dark hair and every paw print first; Cream is forgiving of a pale dog; the Brown, which is a light taupe rather than a chocolate, hides the most. In a busy house with a dark dog, buy the taupe. If the mat is going in a crate or a car boot, buy the taupe regardless.

What if it arrives damaged, or it is the wrong size for my crate?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A mat a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure your dog lying down before you order, and keep the box until you are sure.
