How it works

Why the wall is 27 cm, what is under the fur, and which dog needs the sofa instead

Illustrated golden retriever puppy resting its chin on the rim of a grey WOOPF™ Furry Range Round Bed, three stacked rolls of long fur

Twenty-seven centimetres of wall: a den, not a cushion

Three stacked rolls of long fur make the wall, and at 27 cm it is the tallest on any WOOPF™ round bed. That height is the whole idea.

  • Below the draughtA small dog inside it is below the draught that runs across a floor, out of sight of the room.
  • A rim at chin heightA rim to rest its head on or tuck its nose under; a cat has a well to disappear into.
  • Soft fibre, not a stiff bolsterThe rolls give and can be pushed down by a dog that would rather sleep under a wall than behind one.
  • Small on purposeA den only works if the walls are close.
Illustrated golden retriever puppy asleep curled in a brown WOOPF™ Furry Range Round Bed beside an empty grey one, fur inside the well

Long fur inside and out, a soft fill

The pile is a long faux fur, and it is the same inside the well as it is on the outside of the rolls. Under it is a soft fibre fill.

  • No seam or flat panelThere is no seam or flat panel for a curled-up animal to lie against.
  • What self-warming means hereThat combination keeps a small animal's own heat in the way a blanket over a basket does: no wire, no pad, nothing plugged in.
  • What a small curler actually usesYou are paying for the shape and the fur; you are not paying for foam, because there is none.
  • Two coloursBrown (a light mocha in the photographs) and Grey, both forgiving of pale hair.
Illustrated golden retriever climbing over the wall of a grey WOOPF™ Furry Range Round Bed, front paws in the well and one hind leg outside

What it is not: orthopedic, low, or a treatment

No foam is listed anywhere in the product, so it is a cushioned nest and not an orthopedic bed.

  • First, orthopedicA small dog with sore hips, a dog after surgery or a dog past ten belongs on the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed.
  • Second, lowA 27 cm wall is a hop in and a hop out, many times a day. A healthy small dog and any cat manage it without thinking.
  • Which should not climb itA dachshund or any long-backed dog, a post-op patient, an old stiff dog or a puppy under about twelve weeks should not be doing it.
  • Third, calmingThe enclosure and the warmth are real and a nervous small dog often settles faster in a den. That is a shape, not a medicine.

Three sizing rules

  • One size, 50 x 50 x 27 cm outside. The well inside the rolls is about 30 cm across by our measure from the photographs. Measure your pet asleep in a ball, nose to tail: under about 30 cm fits the well; a little over, and they will lie on the slope of the rolls or drape a leg over the rim, which plenty choose to do.

  • As a guide, that is cats, kittens, puppies and small dogs to about 6 kg: a Chihuahua, a Toy Poodle, a Pomeranian, a Maltese, a Cairn Terrier. It is a guide from the size, not a published limit, and the verified reviews include a chihuahua, a Cairn terrier and a whippet that curls tight enough to use it. A dog over about 6 kg, or one that sleeps stretched out, wants the Furry Corduroy Round Bed in Medium (76.5 cm) or Large (100.5 cm).

  • The wall matters as much as the width. Twenty-seven centimetres is a hop for a healthy small dog or a cat and the wrong height for a dachshund or any long-backed dog, a dog after surgery, an old dog that lands stiff, or a puppy that cannot yet climb out on its own: those want the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, which is memory foam with a low front. In a crate, the bed needs at least 55 cm of floor across.

How to

How to size it, place it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to run a tape measure nose to tail along a golden retriever puppy asleep curled in a ball

Measure the curl, not the dog

Measure them asleep in a ball, nose to tail: under about 30 cm fits the well. A little over and they lie on the slope of the rolls, which many prefer. A dog that sleeps flat out on its side wants a flat mat, not a nest.

  • Illustrated woman sitting on a cream sofa while a golden retriever puppy sleeps in a brown Furry Range Round Bed against the sofa's arm

Put it where they already hide

The corner behind the couch, under the desk, beside your side of the bed. A den bed works because it goes where the animal already dens; do not expect a small dog to cross an open room for it.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy sitting in a grey Furry Range Round Bed with its top roll pushed over its head like a hood

    Let them arrange it

A dog that pushes a wall down and sleeps under it, or a cat that flattens one side to see out, is using it properly. Fluff the rolls back up on wash day, not every morning.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling at an open front-loading washing machine, turning its dial, with one hand on an empty grey Furry Range Round Bed

Wash it before it needs it

Fortnightly in normal use, weekly for a pet with itchy skin, the same day after an accident. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, no softener, air dry out of the sun and shake the fur back up. No tumble dryer. The whole bed goes in.

  • Illustrated woman crouching beside a golden retriever puppy sitting with one front paw raised against the wall of an empty grey Furry Range Round Bed

Watch how they get in and out

If a small dog hesitates at the wall, scrambles, or lands stiff, this is the wrong bed for that dog now: move to the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed and see your vet about the stiffness. A dachshund or a post-op dog should start on the SNÖR, not end up there.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A nest is comfort, not treatment. There is no foam in this bed, so it does nothing for sore joints; a small dog that is stiff after rest, reluctant to jump, licking at one joint or limping for more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination and, usually, memory foam under it. The wall: 27 cm is a jump down as well as a hop in, and for a dachshund or any long-backed breed, a dog recovering from surgery, an old dog or a very young puppy it is the wrong height; a puppy that cannot climb out will cry, so keep it where you can hear it and lift them until they manage it. Anxiety: a den makes a nervous small dog feel safer and that is real; a dog that trembles, paces, drools, will not eat or cannot be left has a fear that a bed cannot treat, and the sooner you talk to a vet about it the better it goes. Heat: long fur in a deep well is warm, which is the point in winter and a risk for a flat-faced dog, an overweight dog or an old dog on a hot night; if they are panting in it, take it away until the weather turns. Chewers: a puppy or a young dog that opens a seam and eats the fibre fill can block a gut, so check the rolls weekly and retire the bed the day a seam goes. Accidents: fur holds urine against the skin, so wash the same day; urine dermatitis in a small dog or a kitten takes a day or two to start.

Why I designed it

For the smallest dog in the house, and the cat that was there first.

Small animals sleep differently. A chihuahua, a toy poodle, a kitten: they curl tight, they tuck the nose, and they pick the spot with walls, the corner behind the couch or the gap under the desk, because a small animal in the open feels exposed and loses heat fast. This bed is that spot, made properly.

  • The tallest wall on any round bed I sellFifty centimetres across, and three soft fur rolls stacked into a wall 27 cm high all the way round, which is the tallest wall on any round bed I sell. Inside it a small dog is out of the draught and out of sight, with a rim for the chin.
  • Push one down and burrow under itThe rolls are soft, so a dog that wants to push one down and burrow under it can, and one verified customer's chihuahua does exactly that.
  • Not an orthopedic bedThere is no foam in it, so it is not an orthopedic bed; the SNÖR is the memory foam bed for the small dog that needs one.
  • A hop in and a hop outTwenty-seven centimetres is a hop in and a hop out, fine for a healthy small dog or a cat and wrong for a dachshund with a back, a dog after surgery, or an old dog that lands stiff.
  • A shape, not a medicineAnd calming is the enclosure and the warmth, which are real, not a treatment for anxiety, which a bed cannot be.
  • The least expensive round bed I makeIt is the least expensive round bed I make, because it is the smallest. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    • This is the ultimate snuggle bed for my whippet. She is obsessed since day one.

    • Perfect for denning dogs! My chihuahua pushed down a side to get in and sleep under it. He sleeps there without a blanket (even though he has one). My Carin terrier loves hers as it comes because of the sides she’s able to cuddle up in it sleeping comfortably in one spot all night. I’m highly impressed. All three of my dogs are rescues now have woopf beds. They are more energized in the mornings, which tells me they slept well. Thank you!

Will my dog or cat fit?

Measure them asleep in a ball, nose to tail: under about 30 cm fits the well inside the rolls, and a little over means they lie on the slope or drape a leg over the rim, which plenty prefer. As a guide that is cats, kittens, puppies and small dogs to about 6 kg: a Chihuahua, a Toy Poodle, a Pomeranian, a Maltese, a Cairn Terrier. The verified reviews include a chihuahua, a Cairn terrier and a whippet, which curls tighter than its size suggests. A dog over about 6 kg, or one that sleeps stretched out, wants the Furry Corduroy Round Bed in Medium or Large.

    Is it orthopedic?

No. There is no foam listed anywhere in this bed; under the fur is a soft fibre fill, which is comfortable for a healthy small animal and does nothing for a sore joint. A small dog with stiff hips, a dog after surgery or an old dog belongs on the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, which is lavender memory foam with a low front, or the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed if it is bigger.

Is a 27 cm wall too high for a small dog?

For a healthy small dog or a cat, no: it is a hop, and the rolls are soft enough to lean on, flatten a little, or push down, which one verified customer's chihuahua does to sleep under a wall rather than behind it. For a dachshund or any long-backed dog, a dog recovering from surgery, an old dog that lands stiff or a puppy that cannot yet climb out, yes, and the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed is the right bed instead. The photos show a dachshund in it and a healthy young one will love the den; my caution is about backs, and it stands.

Will it help my anxious dog?

In one real way: a small dog that feels exposed in the open settles faster in a den with walls, warmth and its own smell, and this is a proper den. It is not a treatment. A dog that trembles, paces, drools, will not eat when you are out or cannot be left at all has a fear that a bed cannot fix. Talk to a vet; anxiety responds to training and, when it needs it, medication, and the sooner the better.

    Cat or dog?

Both, and in a house with both, the cat will take it. A cat wants exactly what this is, a well with high sides to disappear into and a rim to watch the room over, and at 50 cm it suits any cat. If the small dog is the one it was bought for, buy two, because a cat does not negotiate.

    How do I wash it?

The whole bed goes in the machine. Cold water, gentle cycle, no softener, air dry out of the sun, and shake or brush the fur back up as it dries. No tumble dryer and no iron; heat mats a long pile for good. Wash fortnightly, weekly for a pet with itchy skin, and the same day after an accident.

Brown or Grey: which hides the hair?

The one nearest your pet. The Brown is a light mocha rather than a chocolate, so it hides tan, cream and red hair and shows black; the Grey is a warm mid grey that hides grey and white and shows tan. Neither is a pale bed, so neither shows paw prints the way a cream one does. In a house with a black cat and a golden dog, buy one of each.

What if it arrives damaged, or my dog will not use it?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Change of mind and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will consider a return. A bed a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure your pet curled up before you order. Give a new bed a week in the spot the dog already sleeps, with a worn T-shirt of yours in the well.
