  2. 0:12 Here we have the WOOPF™ outdoor dog bed or the outdoor dog hammock bed. The reason why it's a hammock is because it's kind of a bit of a sling in there.

  4. 0:24 It's not amazing, but I've had multiple outdoor dog beds that kind of had thin metal. They had sharp bits. They would rust. I had problems with them. You know, I had problems with the fabric.
  5. 0:32 Anyway, so the reason why this one is so good compared to others, is that it does have this sturdy aluminum frame. I've got them to paint it in a dark gray. I think the dark gray looks really good with the black kind of trampoline or hammock fabric.
  6. 0:46 This round frame is really sturdy. It can't really be chewed or broken. Good luck to it. The dog's going to break its teeth before it breaks this.
  7. 0:54 So, when you put it together, you've got to put it together like this, like I guess the outside frame. When you put it together, you don't tighten all the bolts.
  8. 1:03 Put these joints in this kind of—I guess these corner bits. Put them in there first. Everything's loose. So, you don't—yeah, again, don't tighten the bolts everywhere.
  9. 1:14 And then you move it around. You slowly tighten everything each. Keep going around and around and around until you're fully tightened.
  10. 1:21 Don't tighten one corner before you tighten the others because otherwise you won't be able to put it together. It is a bit fiddly in that sense, but otherwise everything else is really good.
  11. 1:29 The rubber feet on here are glued in. They're not going to, you know, move. I got multiple of these products in, you know, from different factories.
  12. 1:35 I actually got screwed over by one factory when I was ordering these because they showed me photos of this. I generally don't sell crap. If something doesn't go too well, then it becomes a free gift for everybody's next order.
  13. 1:43 So, this has a mesh fabric on there for the hammock part. The reason why, you know, I chose that over a solid PVC is because this is still breathable.
  14. 1:54 So, it can be used indoors, outdoors. If it gets rain on it, the water will go through it.
  15. 1:58 Whereas the PVC ones, if you get snow or you get rain on it, you know, that water does sit there. So, if the dog goes back into it, they do get wet. It's not as good.
  16. 2:06 So, if you want to make it warmer, then yeah, look, like you can just get a PVC sheet or something like that and put it over the top. You can get heaps of waterproof fabrics and stuff that just, you know, just sit over the top and then put a bed on top of that.

  18. 2:21 So, that's why I went for that rather than—you'll see some other dog hammocks that are just solid material and not breathable. I prefer the breathable because there's more options. You know, you can use it whenever, whereas the—as I said, the solid material tends to, you know, not be as good.
  19. 2:37 But this is a premium outdoor or indoor elevated bed. It's called the outdoor dog hammock bed, but it can be used indoors.
  20. 2:44 In my mind, these kind of beds are used more outdoors because you're elevating it to stop kind of mold and bugs and crap getting underneath. Whereas indoors, you've got a more fluffy, comfy bed and you can, you know, you tend to move that around a bit more. You vacuum inside, stuff like that.

Nothing to pull apart

A dog that destroys beds does it the same way every time: finds a soft edge or a seam, opens it, and pulls out what is inside.

Three sizing rules

  • Measure the dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail, and buy the cot longer than that with room inside the frame: under about 80 cm the Medium, under about 95 cm the Large, under about 118 cm the Extra large. The frame is a hard rim, not a soft bolster, so a dog that hangs a leg over a mat will not want to hang it over a tube: between sizes, go up.

  • Weight bands, as a guide: Medium for dogs to about 15 kg, Large for 15 to 30 kg, Extra large for 30 kg and up, to the 75 kg rating, or two small dogs side by side. The bands are a guide from the footprints, not a published limit. The sleeping panel sits inside the tube, so it is smaller than the outer size on every side.

  • This is the bed for the yard, the patio, the kennel run, the garage and the camp site, and for a hard floor indoors with a dog that destroys soft beds. A stiff old dog, a dog after surgery or a thin dog that sleeps on it all day wants foam under it: the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat on a hard floor indoors, or the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed and the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, whose memory foam is published.

How to

How to size it, set it up and keep it clean

    Measure the dog flat

    Nose to tail base lying stretched out on its side: under 80 cm the Medium, under 95 the Large, under 118 the Extra large. The frame is a hard rim, so between sizes go up.

    Assemble it and tug the corners

    Fit the legs and the corner joints, then pull on the panel at each corner: it should be drum-tight with no play in the joints. Do it again after the first week.

    Put it in the shade

    Under a tree, a verandah or a shade sail, with water beside it. The air under the dog is the point on a hot day and only works out of the sun. Indoors it goes on a hard floor for the dog that destroys soft beds.

    Swap the cover with the weather, and hose it

    The mesh cover for heat, the waterproof PVC cover for rain and mud. Hose or wipe the panel; take the covers off to wash them. Let a wet panel dry before a cold night.

    Watch the edges, and watch how they get up

    If your dog chews, check the panel edges and the seams weekly and give it a chew instead. A dog that is stiff getting up from the panel, or reluctant to step up 15 cm, wants foam under it indoors and a vet's look at its joints.

Chewers: the frame has nothing to swallow, the fabric can still be opened by a determined dog, and swallowed fabric can block a gut; a dog that has eaten bedding and is vomiting, off its food or not passing stools needs a vet the same day. Old and thin dogs: 15 cm is a step, and a firm panel is hard on elbows; a dog that is stiff after rest, slow to rise or reluctant to step up needs an examination and memory foam under it rather than a cot. Heavy panting that does not settle, thick drool, a staggering or collapsed dog on a hot day is heatstroke: wet the dog with cool water, get air moving over it and go to a vet now.

Why I designed it

The bed for the dog that eats beds, and for the forty-degree day.

Two things a soft bed cannot do, and this one can. Then three honest lines.

  • The problem is the swallowingI have spent enough nights taking bedding out of dogs to know that the problem is not the chewing, it is the swallowing: stuffing, foam, a strip of cover.
  • Air under the dog on a hot dayFifteen centimetres of moving air under a dog does more than any fabric on a forty-degree afternoon, in the shade, with water.
  • Chew-proof is the frameNo fabric is guaranteed against a dog left alone with it forever, so check the edges and give the chewer something else to chew.
  • Not a bed for a stiff old dogIt is not orthopaedic: there is no foam in it; a stiff old dog wants the SNÜZ or the SNÖR and no step up.
  • It is not shadeA black cot in full sun is a hot cot. Shade and water first, then the bed. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    Which size do I buy?

    Measure the dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail, and buy the cot longer than that with room inside the frame: under about 80 cm the Medium, under 95 cm the Large, under 118 cm the Extra large. As a guide that is dogs to about 15 kg, 15 to 30, and 30 kg and up to the 75 kg rating, or two small dogs side by side. The frame is a hard tube, not a soft bolster, so between sizes go up. A giant breed fits the Extra large curled rather than stretched.

    Is it really chew-proof?

    The frame is: steel tube and corner joints with nothing to lift, shred or swallow, which is what kills soft beds. The fabric is chew-resistant, which is not the same thing. A dog left alone with any fabric for long enough can open it, so the box has a second cover and the fix for an opened panel is a swap at the corners, not a new bed. Check the panel edges weekly, and give the dog something it is allowed to chew, such as a Chewster Blocky Bone; a bored dog on a bed it cannot destroy goes looking for one it can. A dog that has swallowed fabric and is vomiting or not passing stools needs a vet the same day.

    Is it orthopaedic, and is it right for an old dog?

    No, and usually not. There is no foam in a cot: the dog lies on a fabric panel under tension, which spreads its weight evenly and is nothing like memory foam. An old or stiff dog also has to step up 15 cm and lies on a firm panel that is hard on thin elbows. For that dog, indoors, buy published memory foam, the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, and on a hard floor the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat; keep the cot for the yard on a hot day, with a folded blanket on the panel if the dog is thin. A stiff dog wants a vet's look at its joints as well.

    Does it keep a dog cool, and can it stay in the sun?

    It helps in the shade and does nothing in the sun. The 15 cm of air under the dog is the one thing that cools a dog that a fabric cannot, because the whole underside of the body is off the ground and in moving air; a cot in full sun with a black panel is hotter than the lawn beside it. Put it under a tree, a verandah or a shade sail with water beside it, and use the mesh cover in summer. Heavy panting that does not settle, thick drool or a wobbly dog on a hot day is heatstroke: cool water over the body, air moving, and a vet now.

    Which cover do I use, and can I buy a spare?

    There are two covers in the box: a waterproof PVC cover for rain, mud and hosing down, and a breathable mesh cover for heat. They swap at the corners, so most yards run mesh in summer and the waterproof cover in the wet. Replacement covers are not sold separately today; the second cover in the box is the spare.

    Can it live outside all year, and will the frame rust?

    The frame is described as anti-rust steel and the fabrics as resistant to dirt and outdoor wear, and the cot is built to stay out; a covered spot makes everything last longer. Two winter rules: the air gap that cools a dog in summer cools it in winter too, so on a cold night bring the cot in or put bedding on the panel, and a wet mesh panel is not a bed until it has dried. Bring the spare cover in when it is not on the frame. Ask your vet where an old or thin dog should sleep in winter.

    How do I clean it?

    Hose it or wipe it down where it stands; that is the point of a cot over a bed. For a proper wash, take the cover off at the corners and use a hose, a brush and a bucket of soapy water. Dry it before the dog goes back on it in cold weather, and check the frame joints and the panel edges while it is off.

    What if it arrives damaged, or the size is wrong?

    Damaged or faulty on arrival: email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice with a photo and your order number and it is covered. Wrong size: returns are considered within 14 days on unused items in their original packaging, so measure the dog flat before you order rather than after.
