- 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
- 0:12 Lickens snack mat: This is a slow feeder mat, which also comes with a slow feeder bowl attached to it. It's 100% silicone. This is my own design. You don't get many mats that are this big for slow feeders.
- 0:25 This comes in, obviously, we got three colors: We've got gray, we've got rainbow (which is fabulous), and we have purple. Purple's my favorite color. Gray is just gray because it's a standard color.
- 0:34 Why would you use one of these? The reasons behind using this is: If your dog eats really, really fast, there is a hormone that goes from the stomach to the brain called leptin. That is the hormone that makes you feel full.
- 0:45 If you eat really, really fast, that hormone obviously takes time to go from the stomach to the brain and then tell your body that you are full or satiated. If you gulp it down, you're going to be able to beat the hormone. Pretty much, it's a race.
- 0:58 So, if your dog's snacking down as much food as possible, he is going to be able to fill up his stomach or the stretch receptors in the stomach before the hormone hits his brain and tells him that he's full. So, he's going to get more food in. Moral of the story is that you want them to eat slower, and then they won't get as fat. That's pretty much the whole point of this, is to try and slow down feeding so they don't get as fat.
- 1:18 The other reason is that big dogs, if they eat too fast, it is a potential risk of a disease called GDV (or gastric dilation-volvulus), which is where the stomach twists around and they can potentially die. These happen mainly with bigger, deep-chested breeds, so like Dobermans or German Shepherds.
- 1:36 Why would you use one of these and how would it help with that? If they eat too fast, potentially the food can go straight into the stomach, cause it to be heavy in one spot, and then kind of swing around and twist around on itself. Whereas if they eat it slower, then it can take its time. The food can start to go into the intestines, and then you have a bit more of an even, balanced amount of food in the stomach.
- 1:55 It's just a theory that it can help; we still don't know exactly why it does occur. There's lots of reasons for a twisted stomach, but this is just a potential reason that this mat can help. Another way is you can also raise this mat up for larger dogs. If you do have like a mini coffee table or something, your dog can eat off that, and it can help prevent it as well.
- 2:15 So let's go through the mat and the main points of it: It's made of 100% food-grade silicone, human-grade silicone.
- 2:21 You have the paste section here. You have different designs for this because you'll have different types of paste. Some pastes are going to be gritty and have like chunks of food maybe in it, depending on what you feed. You can put yogurt in here because it doesn't have chunks or anything like that.
- 2:35 Then you've got this area with these kind of like high bones, tall bones. This is more if you want to put larger pieces of treats or larger pieces of food in here. They can still see the food, but it obviously is a little bit harder for them to get to because they got to push around these shapes.
- 2:49 Then the next bit, and the main bit, are the petals. The petals, they have to sniff and push the petals either side to be able to get their nose and tongue under there to be able to get all that food that does go into that part.
- 3:00 The reason why that bit is so big is because that's where the majority of your food's going to go. So your kibble or wet food or dry food, you can put whatever in this anywhere, but that's where the majority of a meal is going to go.
- 3:09 The other part is the bowl, which has my amazing logo. This is a slow feeder bowl or you can use it for water. You can just keep their water in there if you want to. Otherwise, you can use wet food and mush it around the logo, and it does make it harder for them to get their food out of there as fast.
- 3:25 The other thing is all of these mats come with multiple suction cups on the back end. The best part of this mat is that you can just chuck it on the ground in the kitchen, and then once they're done, you just pull it off and chuck it in the washing machine. And then once it's done in the washing machine, you can just put it back on the floor.
- 3:39 Again, this has been made by me, my design. I really like this mat. The reason why I made it so big is because you can do all different breeds and all different types of food in there. Most of the mats that are on the market at the moment are kind of like one portion of this rather than putting a whole group of stuff together.
- 3:57 So you can have a whole mix of stuff plus your water bowl or another food bowl, everything in one. And suction cups to hold it down so your animal can't push it around or knock it over and spill, or food goes everywhere, water goes everywhere, which happens with some snuffle mats as well, where they can move it around, and then they kind of pick it up, throw it around, and shake it everywhere.
- 4:16 So, quite big. Anyway, I like it. I designed it. It's cool.

How it works
Why one mat replaces the bowl, the lick mat and the puzzle feeder

The bowl is for dinner, the mat is for everything else
The raised bowl at one end holds a meal of kibble or wet food, and the dog eats it around the ridges instead of inhaling it, which turns a 40-second dinner into several minutes.
- Gulping brings food back upA dog that gulps swallows air and brings food back up; slowing it down is the one thing every vet agrees on for fast eaters.
- Turn dinner into a searchIf dinner is still too quick, spread half of it across the cube field beside the bowl and it becomes a search.
- Three zones for the dayThe three zones do the rest of the day: paste before a nail trim, yoghurt while visitors arrive, a frozen smear on a hot afternoon.

Three textures, because paste, wet food and kibble behave differently
The fine grid is for paste: peanut butter (xylitol-free), yoghurt or mashed pumpkin spread thin, so the dog licks for a long time and eats very little.
- Cube field traps the foodThe cube field traps wet food and kibble between the blocks so it has to be tongued out one piece at a time.
- Honeycomb and bristles for the smearThe honeycomb and the bristle patch hold the last thin smear that a flat mat gives up in seconds.
- Frozen flat, 20 to 30 minutesLoad all four, freeze it flat, and most dogs are busy for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Works on a nervous dogLicking settles a dog: it is the same reason a lick mat works on a nervous dog when a squeaky toy does nothing.

Suction cups, because a slow feeder that slides is a fast feeder
Most lick mats end up under the fridge, and a slow-feeder bowl that a big dog can shove across the floor stops being slow. This one has suction cups across the whole base.
- Holds on tiles, timber or stonePress it onto tiles, timber or stone and a dog leaning in with its full weight cannot skate it, flip it or fold it.
- On carpet, it stays by weightOn carpet the cups have nothing to grip, but at over a kilo the mat stays put by weight.
- Not for hanging on a wallIt is not made to hang on a wall: for the bath-time trick you want a small mat, and this one is the size of a dinner tray.

Three sizing rules
-
One size: 60 x 30 cm, about 1.1 kg, with the bowl at one end. Big enough for a Labrador or a Shepherd to eat a full meal from; a Chihuahua uses one corner and ignores the rest.
-
Any dog, any age, and cats too. Puppies, seniors and dogs on crate rest get the most out of it: full brain, no impact. It needs a smooth floor for the suction to work; on carpet it stays put by weight alone.
-
Not a chew toy. A dog that chews silicone rather than licking it should have the mat taken up once the food is gone and be given a Chewster for the chewing.

How to
How to use a slow-feeder lick mat

Put it down, press it down
Smooth, clean floor. Press the mat down from the bowl end so the suction cups seat; wet the cups if the floor is dusty. It should not move when you push it with a foot.

Dinner in the bowl
Pour the meal into the bowl. A fast eater now takes minutes. Still too quick? Spread half the kibble across the cube field as well and dinner becomes a search.

Paste on the zones
A thin smear of xylitol-free peanut butter, yoghurt or wet food across the grid, the honeycomb and the bristles. Thin is the point: the dog licks longer and eats less.

Freeze it for a longer session
Loaded and frozen flat, it keeps most dogs busy for 20 to 30 minutes. Use it for nail trims, visitors, bath time or a storm.

Wash after every use
Top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water and a soft brush into the grid. Dry the base before it goes back down; wet cups do not grip.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc
A lick mat is for licking. If your dog starts chewing the silicone, take it up once the food is gone and give them a Chewster for the chewing; swallowed silicone is a vet visit. Slowing a fast eater helps, but it is not a treatment for bloat: a deep-chested dog that retches without producing anything, or whose belly swells, is an emergency, not a feeding question. Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol (sometimes labelled birch sugar): it is toxic to dogs. Whatever goes on the mat counts toward the day's food.

Why I designed it
A lick mat calms a dog down. A slow feeder slows one down. I wanted both on the floor at once, and not sliding under the fridge.
Licking is how a dog settles itself, which is why a smear of yoghurt on a mat gets a nervous dog through a nail trim, a storm or the first night in a new house. Fast eating is a different problem with the same fix: make the dog work for the food.
- A lick mat in a drawerEvery house I know that owns both has a lick mat in a drawer and a slow-feeder bowl skating across the kitchen floor. So I put them in one piece of silicone and stuck it down.
- Stuck downThe bowl at one end takes the meal, the three zones beside it take paste, wet food and hidden kibble, and the suction cups mean a 35 kg Labrador leaning into it does not move it.
- A big dog needs a big matIt is 60 by 30 centimetres and weighs more than a kilo because a big dog needs a big mat and a thin one folds.
- It goes in the dishwasherIt goes in the dishwasher. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

This is a really great slow feeder. Normally our puppy would scoff down her food but this mat allows her to eat more slowly and it means she has to work hard to find the food. It also sticks to our floor which is great so she can push into the mat foraging for the food without it moving around the floor and folding over. Loving this one as well as the other favourite the snuffle ball.
May 2026 This is a perfect way to keep my puppy happy and playful with treats. Love the suction cups that keep this in place, too.
June 2026 Great size and beautiful colours. Suction is great. Can’t wait for the puppy to use it in a couple of weeks.

Will it actually slow my dog down?
Yes, at every meal, which is the point of building the bowl in. Kibble or wet food goes in the raised bowl and the dog eats around the ridges instead of inhaling; if that is still too fast, spread half the meal across the cube field and it becomes a search that takes minutes. A dog that gulps swallows air and brings food back up, and gulping is one of the things vets associate with bloat in deep-chested breeds. Slowing it down is worth doing. It is not a treatment for bloat, and nothing you can buy is: a deep-chested dog that retches without bringing anything up, or whose belly swells, needs an emergency vet immediately.
What goes where on the mat?
Bowl: the meal, dry or wet. Fine grid: paste, spread thin, so peanut butter (xylitol-free), yoghurt or mashed pumpkin takes minutes to lick clean. Cube field: wet food or kibble, which gets trapped between the blocks. Honeycomb and bristles: the last thin smear that a flat mat gives up in seconds. Load the lot and freeze it flat for a 20 to 30 minute session. Whatever goes on the mat counts toward the day's food.
Will the suction cups hold?
On a smooth, clean floor, yes: tile, timber, stone and vinyl. Press the mat down from the bowl end and wet the cups if the floor is dusty. A big dog leaning in with its full weight will not skate it, flip it or fold it, which is what the reviews keep mentioning. On carpet the cups have nothing to grip, but at about 1.1 kg the mat stays put by weight. It is not made to stick to a wall: it is the size and weight of a dinner tray, and a wall-mounted lick mat is a different, smaller product.
Is it big enough for a large dog, and too big for a small one?
It is 60 x 30 cm, so a Labrador, a Shepherd or a Great Dane eats a full meal from the bowl and works the zones without crowding. A small dog or a cat simply uses one corner: the mat does not care how much of it is used, and the suction holds either way.
How do I clean it, and is it dishwasher safe?
Dishwasher safe, top rack, after every use with paste or wet food. By hand: warm soapy water and a soft brush into the grid and around the cubes, then dry the base before it goes back on the floor, because wet cups do not grip. Silicone does not hold smells or stains the way plastic does, which is why the Rainbow stays Rainbow.
Is it safe if my dog chews?
It is a lick mat, not a chew toy. Most dogs lick it clean and walk away; a dog that starts chewing the cubes or the rim should have it taken up once the food is gone, and swallowed silicone is a vet visit. If your dog needs to chew after eating, give them a Chewster Blocky Bone and keep the mat for the licking.
What if it arrives damaged or I want a different colour?
