The set for the dog that gets wet every day: a collar and a lead in coated webbing with no fabric core, so sea water, dam water, mud and smell have nowhere to soak in. Swim, roll, rinse, wipe, done, and the neck under the collar is dry a minute later. A quick-release buckle and a rustproof D-ring on the collar; 180 cm, no stretch and a locking swivel clip that cannot rust on the lead. Pick the collar size, the collar colour and the leash colour separately, nine colours each with a Glow, for less than the two apart. For the calm walker that swims; a dog that pulls toward the water walks on the Sealskin Harness.

How it works

The Sealskin Collar is PVC-coated webbing with no fabric core. Water beads on it, mud slides off it, a rinse under the tap or a wipe is the whole cleaning routine.

The Sealskin Leash is the same coated webbing as the collar, 180 cm of it at 2.5 cm wide, about 320 g, with a sewn loop handle embossed so your grip holds when the lead is wet.

The kit is one price in every size and colour, less than a Sealskin Collar and a Sealskin Leash bought apart.
Size guide
Neck 27 to 37 cm11 to 15 in · About 4 to 10 kg
Neck 32 to 47 cm13 to 19 in · About 10 to 25 kg
Neck 41 to 64 cm16 to 25 in · About 25 kg and up
The collar, by the neck: measure with a soft tape where the collar naturally sits, low on the neck, snug but not tight. Small 27 to 37 cm, Medium 32 to 47 cm, Large 41 to 64 cm. The dog-weight bands are a guide; the tape decides. Between two sizes, go up: coated webbing does not stretch or soften the way nylon does, so a collar at the end of its adjustment has no give left for a winter coat or a growing puppy. The kit price is the same in every size.
The lead is one length for every colour: 180 cm (6 ft) of 2.5 cm coated webbing, about 320 g with the clip, no stretch. For dogs from about 5 kg; under that, the aluminium clip is heavy on a small collar, so clip it to a harness or buy the collar alone with a lighter lead. No upper limit on the dog: the webbing and the clip are rated far beyond any dog, which is why your grip, not the lead, is the thing to look after.
Two colours, two decisions: the collar colour and the leash colour are picked separately, matching or not, and the photos follow the collar. Glow is cream by day and glows green in the dark on either piece. Who the kit is for: a calm walker that gets wet. A dog that pulls walks on the Sealskin Harness with this lead.

How to

Clip it on, slide the adjuster until two fingers slide flat under the webbing and no more; coated webbing has no give, so between sizes go up. Tag on the D-ring; the lead clips there on a calm walker, and to the Sealskin Harness on a dog that pulls.

Clip on, then turn the sleeve until the gate cannot be pressed open. Check it with a thumb before every road. Sand in the sleeve is the one thing that stops it turning, so rinse it after the beach.

Hand through the loop, thumb over the webbing. Never wrap a lead round your hand, wrist or fingers: this webbing will not break when a big dog lunges, and a finger with the lead wound round it will.

After the sea or the dam: rinse the collar, the lead and the clip under the tap, wipe them with the dog towel, done. Then towel the neck under the collar, because the dog takes longer than the collar. Offer fresh water on the sand.

Take the collar off for unsupervised crate time and when two dogs play rough. Once a month: the buckle's click, the D-ring stitching, the clip's sleeve and swivel, the stitching at both ends of the lead. Retire either piece when the stitching lifts.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A collar is for identification and, on a calm walker, the lead. A dog that pulls hard should walk on a harness: repeated pressure on the throat damages the windpipe, raises pressure inside the eyes, and in small and flat-faced breeds can worsen a collapsing trachea; this lead has no stretch, so a dog that hits the end of it at a run takes the jolt through whatever it is clipped to, which is one more reason for the harness. Fit the collar to two fingers flat; coated webbing does not stretch, so a tight fit rubs. Dry the neck under the collar after a long swim: a hot spot starts with wet skin, warmth and one scratch, and a dog already scratching at the neck needs a vet, not a new collar. Take the collar off for unsupervised crate time and during rough play, and never attach a tie-out or a long line to it. Never wrap the lead around your hand or wrist: coated webbing does not break when a big dog lunges, and a finger with the lead wound round it does. The clip is locked only when the sleeve is turned; check it before every road, and rinse it so sand never jams the gate. Offer fresh water on the sand: a dog that gulps sea water while fetching can vomit, get diarrhoea and, in quantity, become dangerously salt-loaded.

Why these two
Golden retrievers swim, and I live with two of them, so I know the two things a nylon set does after a beach summer: the collar that went in the sea on Saturday is still damp against the neck on Tuesday, and the lead is stiff with salt, gritty in the weave and smelling in the car for a week. The damp collar is the one that matters. The summer presentation I could set my watch by is the golden or the Labrador with a hot spot under the collar, a hand-sized patch of raw, weeping skin that started with wet fabric held against warm skin and one scratch.

FAQ
One Sealskin Collar in the size and colour you pick, and one Sealskin Leash in the colour you pick. The kit is one price in every size and colour, less than the two apart. The price struck through on this page is the two parts at today's prices; I checked both pages before writing this. The Smart ID Tag for the collar's D-ring is sold separately.
Yes to both, on both pieces, for the reason that matters: there is no fabric in either. Coated webbing does not absorb water, so there is nothing for sea water, dam water or mud to soak into and nothing for bacteria to live in, which is where the smell of an old nylon collar and lead comes from. Rinse them or wipe them and they are dry and clean in a minute. What the set cannot do is dry the dog: towel the neck after a long swim, because the skin under any collar is where a hot spot starts.
Measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar sits, snug but not tight. Small is 27 to 37 cm (about 4 to 10 kg: cavaliers, dachshunds, cavoodles), Medium 32 to 47 cm (about 10 to 25 kg: kelpies, collies, staffies), Large 41 to 64 cm (25 kg and up: goldens, Labradors, shepherds). Between sizes, go up: coated webbing has no give, so a collar at the end of its adjustment has no room for a winter coat or a growing puppy, and a puppy gets re-measured every two weeks. Under about 5 kg, the lead's aluminium clip is heavy hanging off a small collar: clip it to a harness, or buy the Small collar alone and pair it with a lighter lead.
Yes. The collar colour and the leash colour are two separate rows, so a Blue collar with a Yellow lead is as easy as a matching pair; the photos follow the collar colour and show the lead to match, so read the leash row, not the picture, for what ships. Glow is available on both pieces: cream by day, it charges under daylight or a lamp and glows green in the dark for a while afterwards, brightest in the first hour, so you can see the dog and the line between you on the walk home. It is a glow, not a reflector: it does not throw headlights back, and the other eight colours have no reflective element, so for road walks after dark add a clip-on light.
No. Nothing you clip to a dog stops it pulling; a front-clip harness redirects the pull and training removes it. A flat collar can only take the force on the throat, and this lead has no stretch, so a dog that hits the end of it at a run takes the jolt through whatever it is clipped to. A dog that pulls toward the water walks on the Sealskin Harness with this lead clipped to it, and the collar still earns its place as the thing that carries the tag into the water. On a calm walker the lead clips to the collar's D-ring.
That is what it is for. The webbing, the D-ring and the aluminium clip shrug off salt and fresh water. Two beach habits: rinse the buckle and the clip sleeve under the tap so sand does not sit in them, and let the clip dry open. The quick-release buckle is there because a collar can catch on a submerged branch, and a dog that swims with a tag on should have a tag that copes with water, which the Smart ID Tag does. And offer fresh water on the sand: a dog that gulps sea water while fetching can vomit, get diarrhoea and, in quantity, become dangerously salt-loaded.
Same three collar sizes, same idea, different weather. If your dog swims, wades, rolls or gets rained on most weeks, or your current collar and lead smell, this one: nothing soaks in and both pieces wipe clean. If your dog stays mostly dry and walks a lot on footpaths and in the dark, the City Bundle: the Explorer Collar has 3M reflective stitching and a separate tag ring, and the Explorer Adjustable Leash has three lengths and a waist buckle. Plenty of homes own the Sealskin set for the beach and the Explorer set for the week.
