PACK VILLE

The city set: the collar that carries the ID and catches headlights, and the one lead that goes from short at the kerb to long at the park without a drawer full of leads. A separate tag ring, 3M reflective stitching and a quick-release buckle on the collar; three lengths, no stretch, a locking swivel clip and a waist buckle on the lead. Pick the collar size, the collar colour and the leash colour separately. For a dog that walks calmly on a collar; a puller takes the Training Bundle.

How it works

The collar, the lead, and who the kit is for

Illustrated man kneeling beside a golden retriever, holding a purple Explorer Collar and the clip of a purple Explorer Adjustable Leash, an avocado-shaped tag hanging from the collar's tag ring

The collar: the ID and the light, on the thing they wear every walk

The Explorer Collar has two rings, because the tag and the lead should never share one.

  • The tag on its own ringThe Smart ID Tag or the council tag sits on its own ring, readable and quiet, and the lead D-ring is free for a calm dog's walk.
  • 3M reflective stitchingThe stitching is 3M reflective and runs the length of the webbing, so the collar throws headlights back from every angle on the walk home under the streetlights.
  • Quick-release side buckleThe quick-release side buckle clips on in a second and opens in a second with one hand. A collar caught on a crate bar, a fence wire or another dog's jaw is a strangulation emergency.
  • Three sizes by neck girthBreathable, water-resistant nylon in Small (2 cm webbing, 50 g), Medium and Large (2.5 cm, 70 and 80 g), sized by neck girth from 27 to 64 cm.
Illustrated man standing on the footpath by a blue railing, a golden retriever sitting at his feet in a purple Explorer Collar, the purple Explorer Adjustable Leash short between the collar and the padded handle in his hand

The lead: short at the kerb, long at the park, no stretch in between

The Explorer Adjustable Leash is one lead set to three lengths by a slider.

  • At your knee for the crossingPushed all the way in, the dog is at your knee for the crossing, the lift, the school gate and the cafe strip, and the neoprene-padded handle is your traffic handle.
  • The footpath and the parkIn the middle it is the footpath length. Let it all out for the park and the verge where the nose can go down, still short enough to gather in two hands.
  • No bungee, on purposeIt is plain webbing with no bungee, on purpose. A dog that lunges at another dog on a narrow footpath needs a lead that stops where you stop, not half a metre later.
  • A locking swivel clipThe clip is an aluminium carabiner with a locking sleeve on the gate and a swivel at its base, so it cannot be pushed open against a collar ring and the lead never twists.

The maths, and who the kit is for

The kit costs less than the two apart, and the strike-through on this page is the two parts at today's prices, checked on both pages before this was written.

  • The Pink collar exceptionThe one exception today is the Pink collar: those kits are listed at the two parts' full price.
  • Who it is forA dog from about 5 kg with a neck between 27 and 64 cm that walks calmly on a collar, and a home that wants the collar and the lead to match, or not.
  • Not a no-pull setNothing you clip to a dog stops it pulling, and a dog that pulls walks on the Explorer Harness with this lead, which is the Training Bundle.
  • Not a swimmer's setThe nylon is water-resistant and dries fast, but a dog that swims every day or rolls in mud every walk wants the Swimmer Bundle in coated Sealskin webbing.

Three sizing rules

  • The collar, by the neck: measure with a soft tape where the collar naturally sits, low on the neck, snug but not tight. Small 27 to 37 cm, Medium 32 to 47 cm, Large 41 to 64 cm. The dog-weight bands are a guide; the tape decides. Between two sizes, go up: a collar at the end of its adjustment has no room for a winter coat or a growing puppy. The kit price is the same in every size.

  • The lead is one size for every colour: 2.5 cm nylon webbing, about 140 g, and a slider that sets it to three lengths. For dogs from about 5 kg; under that, the aluminium clip is heavy on a small collar, so clip it to a harness or buy the collar alone with a lighter lead. There is no upper limit on the dog, only on the handler: waist mode is for a dog you could stop by hand.

  • Two colours, two decisions: the collar colour and the leash colour are picked separately, matching or not, and the photos follow the collar. Who the kit is for: a dog that walks calmly on a collar. A dog that pulls walks on the Explorer Harness with this lead, and the Training Bundle is that kit.

How to

How to walk the city on this set

  • Illustrated man sitting on the ground beside a golden retriever, his fingers at the dog's purple Explorer Collar

Fit the collar to two fingers

Clip it on, slide the adjuster until two fingers slide flat under the webbing and no more. Tag on the tag ring, lead on the D-ring. Re-check a puppy every two weeks.

  • Illustrated man kneeling on the grass by a park bench, clipping the locking clip of a purple Explorer Adjustable Leash to a golden retriever's purple Explorer Collar, the padded handle on the grass

Set the lead before you leave

Slide the adjuster: short for footpaths, crossings, the lift and the cafe strip, the middle setting for the everyday walk, long for the park. Check the clip gate is closed and the sleeve locked.

  • Illustrated man on a bench holding the padded loop of a purple Explorer Adjustable Leash and pointing to it, the lead short to a golden retriever's purple Explorer Collar

Short at the kerb, hold it, never wrap it

Hand through the padded loop, thumb over the webbing; when the lead is set short, the doubled section is a second grip closer to the dog. Never wrap a lead round your hand, wrist or fingers: a lunge with the webbing wound round a finger breaks it.

  • Illustrated man sitting at a cafe table with a coffee, the purple Explorer Adjustable Leash buckled round his waist and clipped to the purple Explorer Collar of a golden retriever sitting beside him

    Hands-free for the coffee

Open the buckle in the handle, pass the loop round your waist at the hips, close it. Only with a dog you could stop by hand, never beside traffic. At a cafe, tether only while you are sitting beside them, and never walk away from a tethered dog.

  • Illustrated man at a table checking the padded handle of a purple Explorer Adjustable Leash, the lead running to its locking clip beside a purple Explorer Collar, a golden retriever watching

Off in the crate, checked monthly

Take the collar off for unsupervised crate time and when two dogs play rough. Once a month: the webbing at the buckle, the buckle's click, the clip's locking sleeve and swivel, the stitching at the handle and the rings. Retire either piece when the webbing frays.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian

A collar is for identification and, on a calm walker, the lead. A dog that pulls hard should walk on a harness: repeated pressure on the throat damages the windpipe, raises pressure inside the eyes, and in small and flat-faced breeds can worsen a collapsing trachea. Fit the collar to two fingers flat, take it off for unsupervised crate time and during rough play between dogs, and never attach a tie-out or a long line to it. Never wrap the lead around your hand or wrist: a lunge with the webbing wound round a finger breaks fingers. Waist mode is for a dog that walks well and that you could stop by hand, never beside traffic and never with a dog strong enough to pull you over. Never tether a dog and walk away, and never leave a dog tied to a collar unattended. The long setting is for open ground, not the footpath. Check the clip's locking sleeve, the buckle and the stitching every month and retire either piece when the webbing frays.

Why these two

Short at the kerb, long at the park, and seen all the way home.

Two ways a city dog ends up on my table with the lead still attached: a clip that opened against a collar ring at the kerb, and a collar loose enough to slip a narrow head when a bus went past. A third, slower one is the dog that has leaned into a collar for years and arrives with the cough. This kit is built for the first two and honest about the third.

  • The ID and the lightThe collar carries the ID and the light: a separate ring for the Smart ID Tag, 3M reflective stitching the length of the webbing, and a quick-release buckle that opens one-handed if it ever snags.
  • Three lead lengths, no stretchThe lead is the one I reach for in town: a slider sets it short at heel for the crossing and the cafe strip, to the middle for the footpath and long for the park; it does not stretch, so the dog meets the same boundary every time; and the clip has a locking sleeve, so the gate cannot be pushed open against a ring.
  • Hands-free for the coffeeA buckle in the padded handle puts it round your waist for the coffee.
  • Pullers: the Training BundleThe honest bit: a collar cannot stop a dog pulling, and a dog that pulls belongs on the Explorer Harness with this same lead, which is the Training Bundle. This is the set for the dog that already walks well.
  • The mathsThe strike-through on this page is the two parts at today's prices; I checked both pages before writing this. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

What is in the kit, and what do I save?

One Explorer Collar in the size and colour you pick, and one Explorer Adjustable Leash in the colour you pick. The kit costs less than the two apart, except with the Pink collar, which is listed at the two parts' full price today. The price struck through on this page is the two parts at today's prices; I checked both pages before writing this. The Smart ID Tag for the collar's tag ring is sold separately.

    Is this a no-pull set?

No, and no collar-and-lead set is. A flat collar cannot redirect a pull; it can only take the force on the throat, and years of that is a sore throat, a cough and, in small breeds, a windpipe that starts to collapse. A dog that pulls walks on the Explorer Harness with the lead on the front D-ring, and the Training Bundle is that harness with this same lead. This kit is for the dog that already walks calmly on a collar; on a puller the collar still earns its place as the thing that carries the tag and the reflective stitching, with the lead on the harness.

Which collar size, and will it suit a puppy or a small dog?

Measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar sits, snug but not tight. Small is 27 to 37 cm (about 4 to 10 kg: cavaliers, dachshunds, cavoodles), Medium 32 to 47 cm (about 10 to 25 kg: kelpies, collies, staffies), Large 41 to 64 cm (25 kg and up: goldens, Labradors, shepherds). The ranges overlap on purpose; between sizes, go up. A puppy gets re-measured every two weeks and usually moves up a size in the first year. Under about 5 kg, the lead's aluminium clip is heavy hanging off a small collar: clip it to a harness, or buy the Small collar alone and pair it with a lighter lead.

Can the collar and the lead be different colours?

Yes. The collar colour and the leash colour are two separate rows, so a Blue collar with a Yellow lead is as easy as a matching pair. The photos follow the collar colour, so read the leash row, not the picture, for what ships.

How do the three lead lengths work on a city walk?

The slider sets the lead to one of three lengths, and the change takes a few seconds on the walk. Short is for crossings, lifts and stairwells, the cafe strip, narrow footpaths and passing another dog, with the padded handle as your traffic handle. Middle is the footpath length. Long is for the park and the verge, where a walk with the nose down does more for a dog's head than the same distance at heel. It is not a long line: recall practice at 5 or 10 m needs one, on a harness.

Can I go hands-free, or tether my dog at a cafe?

Hands-free, yes: open the buckle in the padded handle, pass the loop round your waist, close it at the hips, and the small ring beside the handle takes the Explorer Dual Pocket Pouch so the bags come too. It is for a dog that already walks well and that you could stop by hand if it did not, never beside traffic, and never with a dog strong enough to pull you over. Tethering at a cafe: only while you are sitting right beside them, and clipped to a harness rather than the collar. Never walk away from a tethered dog, even for a minute; a tethered dog on a collar that panics or gets rushed by another dog is an emergency I have treated.

Is it good for night walks?

It is built for them. The 3M reflective stitching runs the length of the collar and reflective stitching runs down both edges of the lead, so headlights come back off both pieces at a crossing. Reflective is not a light, though: on an unlit path add a clip-on light, and keep the lead at the short setting where you cannot see what is ahead. And put a Smart ID Tag on the tag ring before the first night walk, because the dog that bolts at a firework or a backfiring bus is the dog that needs to be scanned by whoever finds it.

What if it arrives damaged, or I picked the wrong collar size?

Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice, with a photo, your order number and which piece it is, and it is covered. Wrong collar size and it is unworn in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A lead that a dog has chewed through is not a fault; the lead comes off the hook when the walk ends.
