  1. 0:00 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:09 Let's do the octopus toy. Same again as the Snacky Hive, it comes in four different strengths. So, these ones come in glow-in-the-dark, blue, purple, and black. These ones, even though they are the same material and strength or whatever as the Snacky Hive, the Snacky Hive is slightly bigger. These ones are a bit more dense, just because of the design. These ones are actually a bit more rigid and stiff. So, if your dog is a big chewer, I would go for these ones just because, again, they're smaller, they're a bit more dense, and the shape has made them to be stronger.
  3. 0:41 Uh, this one does have a slow feeder dispenser hole on the bottom. You have a little hole on the top, which is mainly good for cleaning and, you know, olfactory purposes, but all the food and stuff is probably going to go in in this bottom hole. These ones have a flap on them, so it is harder for food to come out. So, if you're going to use like kibble or dry food, freeze-dried food, air-dried food, things like that, it is going to take longer for food to come out of this one. This one is more difficult for that. So, this is for something that you want them to be interested in for longer. But, I would probably use something like the Snacky Hive as a slow dispense feeder because it's going to come out a bit easier because the hole is a bit bigger. So, whereas this one I feel like is a little bit meaner. But, uh, if your dog is a real kind of gobbler or something or you want to keep them busy for longer, that's why I've got this one.
  4. 1:28 And this one has all the little like grooves of coral on the design on the outside because you can put paste in there. It's really good for teeth and gums. That's why, you know, I like this design. It's very strong. It keeps your animal occupied for longer and you can wipe lots of food in the coral, in the little grooves around the outside. That's why this one's a good one.
  5. 1:53 Anyway, these are all made, apart from the silicone one, again, they're all made with 25% recycled rubber. These ones are strong enough. I don't think I need to make them without the 25% rubber material in there. And the bones are more popular than these ones as well. So, these ones will probably stay as one of the standard kind of chewster rubber range. As I said, it's harder to get the food out of these ones, but they've got the grooves on the outside also to be able to put pastes and things like that in there.

How it works

Why the Octopus works for lickers as well as chewers

A golden retriever puppy licks a blue Chewster Octopus beside a few pieces of kibble while a man in a purple jumper strokes its back.

Sucker pads that turn a chew toy into a lick toy

The tentacles curl around the body and their undersides are recessed honeycomb pads, the way an octopus sucker is.

  • Smear it inSmear peanut butter (xylitol-free), plain yoghurt, mashed pumpkin or wet food into them and the dog has to lick, not bite, to get it out.
  • Licking settles most dogsLicking slows a dog down, gets saliva flowing, and settles most dogs the way a lick mat does, except this one can be chewed afterwards.
  • Freeze it for longerFreeze it and the same smear lasts three times as long.
  • Blue Chewster Octopus
  • Purple Chewster Octopus
  • Black Chewster Octopus
  • Glow Chewster Octopus

Match the strength to the dog, not to the marketing

Same shape, same pads, same treat hole, same size; only the rubber changes. Between two strengths, go harder for a shredder and softer for a puppy or a senior.

  • Blue is SoftSoft (Blue) is for puppies still cutting adult teeth, older dogs with worn teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it.
  • Purple is StandardStandard (Purple) is right for most adult dogs.
  • Black is HardHard (Black) is for the staffies, cattle dogs and mastiffs who have destroyed everything else.
  • Stiffer than the Snacky HiveThe same rubber as the Snacky Hive, but smaller and denser, so it is more rigid: the one Dr Duncan picks for a big chewer.
A golden retriever puppy bounds towards a blue Chewster Octopus and reaches out a paw to it.

A shape a dog can hold, and a skin that reaches the teeth

The head sits on a wider body, so there is always a lobe to get the jaws or the paws around, and the toy rolls off-line when it is dropped, so it has to be chased and re-gripped rather than pinned and ground.

  • The skin works the gumsThe scaled skin and the ridged pads work across the tooth surface and along the gum line as the dog chews.
  • Between brushes, not insteadThat supports dental hygiene between brushes and check-ups. It does not replace them, and any vet who tells you a toy does is selling something.
  • A flap on the treat holeThe treat hole in the base has a flap, so kibble and dry food come out slower than from the Snacky Hive. The small hole on top is for cleaning and scent.

Four sizing rules

  • One size: 10.5 cm tall, 8.5 cm wide and about 190 g. It suits dogs from about 7 kg to about 35 kg: too big to swallow, small enough to carry.

  • Toy breed under 7 kg? The Blocky Bone Small is the better fit. Power chewer over 35 kg, or any dog that can get the whole body behind their teeth? Take the Blocky Bone Large.

  • The real choice is the strength. Soft for puppies still cutting adult teeth, seniors and gentle chewers. Standard for most adult dogs. Hard for the ones that have destroyed everything else.

  • Typical breeds in that range: Beagle, Staffy, Border Collie, Labrador (15 to 77 lb).

How to

How to use a stuffable chew toy safely

  • A man in a purple jumper kneels and holds out a blue Chewster Octopus to a golden retriever puppy, an older golden retriever lying beside it.

    Pick the strength

Soft for puppies and seniors, Standard for most dogs, Hard for power chewers. Not sure? A dog that has never destroyed a toy takes Standard; a dog with a graveyard of toys takes Hard.

  • A woman in a green checked shirt sits on the floor and holds out a purple Chewster Octopus to a golden retriever, who sniffs it.

    Smear the pads first

The first session should be a win: a thin smear of xylitol-free peanut butter or yoghurt on the sucker pads, in the room with you, so the dog learns that the Octopus pays out.

  • A golden retriever puppy lies down and licks paste from the pads of a purple Chewster Octopus.

Stuff and freeze for longer sessions

Kibble in the hole, paste on the pads, an hour in the freezer. That keeps most dogs busy for 20 minutes or more. Use it before you leave the house, during visitors, or after a big walk.

  • A woman in a green checked shirt crouches and looks closely at a blue Chewster Octopus in her hand while a golden retriever puppy watches.

    Inspect after every session

Check the eyes, the starfish, the pads and the rim of the hole. Retire the toy once a piece can be bitten off or the hole has widened enough to trap a jaw.

  • A woman in a green checked shirt sits beside a kitchen scale and spoons yoghurt onto a purple Chewster Octopus while a golden retriever waits by its food bowl.

    Count the calories

Whatever goes on the pads or in the hole comes out of the daily food allowance. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

No chew toy is indestructible, and a determined dog can damage anything given enough time. Match the strength to the dog: a Hard Octopus in a puppy's mouth can crack a tooth, and a Soft one in a power chewer's mouth becomes pieces. The eyes and the starfish are the first thing a strong chewer works on, so check them after each session. Supervise sessions, especially the first few. Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol (sometimes labelled birch sugar): it is toxic to dogs. If your dog swallows a piece of any toy and vomits, strains, or goes off food, see a vet the same day.

Why I designed it

Most dogs lick a toy long before they chew it. So I made one that rewards both.

Watch a dog with a new chew and most of them lick it before they bite it.

  • Licking settles a dogLicking is a settling behaviour: it is what a dog does to calm itself down, and it is why a lick mat works on a nervous dog when a squeaky toy does nothing.
  • A lick mat and a chew in oneThe problem is that a lick mat cannot be chewed and a chew toy cannot really be licked. The Octopus does both.
  • Pads to lick, a hole to workThe sucker pads on the tentacles hold a smear of peanut butter or yoghurt for the licking, the treat hole takes kibble for the working, and the rubber comes in Soft, Standard and Hard so it matches the jaw, because the cracked tooth from a chew that was too hard and the swallowed pieces of one that was too soft both end up on my table.
  • What a toy cannot doIt will not cure separation anxiety, and anyone who says a toy does is selling you something.
  • Twenty legal minutesIt gives a bored or worried dog twenty legal minutes with its mouth, which is often the difference between a chewed skirting board and a nap.
  • Tested on Bridie and KikoBridie and Kiko tested every version.

    • We got the black one for my dog Ozzii because he is a super chewer and has the strongest jaws ever and usually destroys toys pretty fast. I wasnt expecting it to last but its actually holding up really good. He loves chewing on the tentacles and I put a little peanut butter in the treat hole which keeps him busy for a long time! It is truly one of the few toys he keeps going back to every day and it still looks great. Really happy with this purchase and Ozzii definitely approves. We will be buying this toy again and again because he plays with it for hours!!

    • My dog was interested in this toy right away. She kept sniffing it, chewing it, and carrying it around like it was her new treasure. The size is nice for a small dog, and the purple design is really cute. It feels light but not flimsy, and it keeps her busy for a while. Definitely a fun little toy for playful pups!

    Which strength should I choose?

Soft (Blue) for puppies still cutting their adult teeth, older dogs with worn or missing teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it. Standard (Purple) for most adult dogs: it is the one to buy if you have never had a toy destroyed. Hard (Black) for the dogs with a graveyard of toys behind them: staffies, cattle dogs, mastiffs, and any dog that has already shredded a Standard. Between two strengths, go harder for a shredder and softer for a puppy or a senior.

What do I put on the pads and in the hole?

On the sucker pads: peanut butter that is free of xylitol, plain yoghurt, mashed pumpkin or banana, or wet food, smeared thin so the dog has to lick for it. In the hole: kibble, or a plug of the same paste. Freeze the loaded toy for a longer session. Afterwards, top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water and a bottle brush through the hole and a nail brush across the pads. Let it dry before refilling. Whatever goes on it counts toward the day's food.

    Is it safe for puppies?

The Soft strength is made for them. Puppies chew hardest between about three and seven months while the adult teeth come through, and a chew that is too hard at that age can chip a tooth. Give a puppy the Soft, with a smear of yoghurt on the pads, supervised, and move up to Standard once the adult teeth are in and you have seen how they chew. Do not start a puppy on the Hard.

Will it suit my dog's size?

It is one size: 10.5 cm tall, 8.5 cm wide and about 190 g, so it suits dogs from about 7 kg to about 35 kg. The rule for any chew toy is that the whole thing must not fit behind the teeth. A toy breed under 7 kg does better with the Blocky Bone Small; a power chewer over 35 kg, or a dog that can get the whole body in their mouth, should take the Blocky Bone Large instead.

Can the eyes or the starfish come off?

Raised details are the first thing a strong chewer works at, so check the eyes, the starfish and the pads after each session and retire the toy once any piece can be bitten free. The flecks themselves are part of the rubber, not paint, and do not chip.

Will it help a dog that gets anxious or destructive when left alone?

It helps in one specific way: it gives the dog something legal and absorbing to do with its mouth for 20 minutes or so, and licking is a settling behaviour for most dogs. Loaded and frozen, handed over as you leave, it takes the edge off a departure for a bored or mildly worried dog. It is not a treatment for separation anxiety. A dog that panics when alone, damages doors or injures itself needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, and our separation anxiety guide is the place to start.

What if it arrives damaged or I picked the wrong strength?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong strength and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap.
