- 0:05 G'day, I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
- 0:10 What have I got here? I've got the WOOPF™ snuffle balls. These are the rainbow ones, but these ones have crackles. Now, what does crackles mean? So let's open them up. This one's a small and this one's a large. So it comes in a nice vacuum-packed packet.
- 0:25 Can you hear that? Crackles, huh? Look, they don't look great when you first take them out of the package. They do take, you know, probably a day or two to fluff up. But anyway, I'm just doing it quickly now.
- 0:39 We have small, which is 15 centimetres, and we have large, which is 20 centimetres. [On-screen correction: the smaller, 15 cm size is labelled “Medium”.]
- 0:43 Why do these crackle? So these have some kind of like a plastic material inside some of the stitched folds. Not all of them, but some of them, so that it gives more sensation or more excitement. So more sensation will cause more excitement to the dog when they're eating, or if they're playing and they're wanting to snuffle it. So if they push on it, it makes crackly noises. It just makes it more enticing. Again, no one else sells these yet. Probably somebody is going to copy me soon.
- 1:12 They still do the same thing as the other snuffle balls. You know, they're a slow feeder. It's more for treats. It's not a whole meal. So you just put small treats around it, and then they've got a ball, so it'll move around. They'll pick it up. They can shake it. They can take it around with them.
- 1:25 I wouldn't leave these toys out all the time. When you're done with them, put them away. The reason for that is most dogs will probably destroy these because they smell of food. But once they're done with them, after you've hidden the treat and stuff, then put it away. Watch them while they're using it, and then put it away afterwards. I have lots of people that leave these out. The dog destroys them or, you know, shakes them around because they're great. They're great fun. A dog has fun, but, you know, destroying them.
- 1:51 But the thing is, they are still fabric. They're not like my Chewster range of toys, which is more dense rubber material, different strength. They're built for chewing dogs. These aren't built for chewing dogs. These are for a different purpose. These are for more like snuffling, slow-feeder kind of, you know, take your time. They can use their brain, their nose, their whiskers and senses for touch, so they can try and find food and not gulp everything down so quickly.
- 2:17 I'm very much into kind of slow feeding, but my dogs, you know, they get their normal meals, which aren't really slow-feeding meals, but then they snack all day, you know. So I can't leave these out because one of my dogs destroys them. The other dog loves them and likes to carry them around. She's more of a soft mouth. The other one's more of a hard arse, or hard mouth.
- 2:35 They're the rainbow snuffle balls with crackles.

How it works
Why the Snuffle Ball With Crackles works for bored, busy and fast-eating dogs

The food stays in until the nose does the work
Most treat toys fail the same way: the dog rolls it, everything falls out, the game is over in a minute.
- Dozens of overlapping fleece petalsThe Snuffle Ball With Crackles is built from dozens of overlapping fleece petals, so kibble sits deep in the folds and has to be found, nosed out and eaten one piece at a time.
- Easy or hard, you choosePack it loosely for a beginner or bury the food for a dog that knows the game, and a session runs anywhere from ten minutes to the best part of an hour.

Crackle: sound for the dogs that ignore scent alone
Some dogs sniff a plain snuffle toy once and walk off.
- Crackle layer insideA crinkle layer inside the ball rustles every time the nose pushes in, which is exactly the sound a dog hears when something small moves in long grass.
- Terriers and collies especiallyIt keeps the sound-motivated dogs, terriers and collies especially, digging back in for the next piece.

A slow feeder for the dog that inhales dinner
Gulping a bowl in 30 seconds is how food comes straight back up, how air ends up in the stomach, and in deep-chested breeds it is one of the habits I would most like to see stop.
- Put the kibble in the ballPut the kibble in the ball instead of the bowl.
- Twenty minutes instead of thirty secondsThe meal takes twenty minutes, the dog finishes calmer than it started, and you have used dinner as the enrichment instead of adding calories on top of it.

Three sizing rules
-
Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg and for cats. Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg and for homes with more than one dog, used one dog at a time.
-
Too big to carry is the point. A ball your dog can pick up and parade around becomes a chew toy; if they carry the Medium, get the Large.
-
Not for fabric shredders of any size. A dog that tears soft toys apart needs a rubber treat toy such as the Chewster Blocky Bone, not a snuffle ball.

How to
How to use a snuffle ball

Start easy
First session, leave a few smelly treats sitting on top of the folds and let your dog watch you put them there. The point is a quick win, not a puzzle.

Bury it deeper
Once your dog gets the game, push kibble down into the folds and roll the ball between your hands. Feed a whole meal this way if you like; most dogs are busy for 15 to 30 minutes.

Stay in the room
It is fleece with a crackle layer inside, not a chew toy. Watch the session, and pick the ball up as soon as the food is gone, before sniffing turns into chewing.

Use it on purpose
Ten minutes before you leave the house, after a walk when the zoomies start, during storms, fireworks or visitors. Sniffing brings arousal down; save it for the moments you need that.

Wash it weekly
Shake out the crumbs, cold gentle cycle, tumble dry low or air dry. A ball that smells of old kibble is a ball that gets chewed.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc
This is a foraging toy, not a chew toy. Inside the fleece is a plastic crackle layer, so a dog that shreds fabric can swallow pieces of both. Supervise every session, remove the ball once the food is gone, and retire it if the fleece tears or the crackle layer shows through. Whatever goes in the ball comes out of the day's food allowance. In a multi-dog home, give it to one dog at a time in a separate room: a food puzzle is exactly the kind of thing dogs guard from each other.

Why I designed it
The first thing I recommend for a bored dog, before any of the expensive stuff.
Half the behaviour problems that walk into my emergency room at 2 am are boredom with a diagnosis attached: the shredded couch, the eaten sock, the dog that bolted dinner and brought it straight back up.
- Ten minutes of proper sniffingA dog's brain runs on its nose, and ten minutes of proper sniffing settles most dogs in a way that another lap of the block does not. That is what this ball is for.
- Deep fleece folds and a crackle layerThe folds are deep enough that the food stays put until the nose earns it, and the crackle layer is there for the dogs who sniff a plain snuffle ball once and walk away.
- How Kiko gets her dinnerKiko has more energy than my night shifts can burn off, and this is how her dinner goes in.
- One honest lineIt is fleece, not rubber. If your dog shreds soft toys, this is not the toy for your dog, and I would rather tell you that here than read it in a review.

I REPEAT: The treats do not fall out! This is *huge* because I feel like toys/enrichment like this often fail in that the animals roll the toy, the treats fall out, and the game is over. In this snuffle ball, the felt (?) keeps the treats in place and my high-drive dogs spend 30-45 mins (!) working their way through these. This has been a really great, "I'm leaving the house for errands, pls enjoy this gift" type of enrichment toy!
June 2026 My girls love it!! It keeps them busy for ages which is wonderful and a new way to eat their kibble (with a few treats mixed in). Great quality too!
December 2025 My little pocket rocket LOVES this snuffle ball. Keeps him entertained for ages, which gives me some peace of mind. Thank you.

Is a snuffle ball good for anxious dogs?
Sniffing and foraging are the fastest ways I know to bring a dog's arousal down, which is why this works before you leave the house, during storms and after an over-excited walk. It is a tool, not a treatment: a dog with true separation anxiety needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, and the ball becomes one part of it.
Which size should I buy?
Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg and for cats. Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg. The ball should be too big for your dog to pick up and carry; if they can parade around with the Medium, you want the Large.
What do I put in it?
Kibble is the everyday answer, so the ball replaces the bowl rather than adding calories. Dry training treats, freeze-dried meat and broken biscuits work for a harder search. Nothing wet, greasy or sticky; it soaks into the fleece and goes off.
How long will it keep my dog busy?
Ten minutes for a beginner with treats sitting on top, 15 to 30 minutes for a meal packed into the folds, and reviewers with high-drive dogs report 30 to 45 minutes when everything is buried deep. Pack it harder as your dog gets better.
Can I leave my dog alone with it?
No. It is fleece with a crackle layer inside, and the one-star reviews on this page include a dog that shredded it in five minutes and a dog that was not interested. Watch the session, take the ball away when the food is gone, and give a fabric shredder a rubber toy instead.
Can cats and other pets use it?
Yes. The Medium suits cats, rabbits and ferrets, with the same rule of supervising and removing it once the food is gone. Cats often prefer a few pieces on top rather than buried. For a cat-specific enrichment range, see PURRZ™.
How do I wash it?
Shake out the crumbs, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or air dry. Once a week if it is used daily, and always after wet food gets near it.
What if it arrives damaged, or my dog destroys it?
Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Shredded by an enthusiastic dog: that is the wrong toy for that dog, and the Chewster Blocky Bone is the right one.
