Chase & Sniff Bundle

Ten minutes of fetch, then ten minutes of nose work, in that order. The MeteorBite Ball is the hollow fetch ball with holes right through it, so it breathes if it ever lodges, in two sizes matched to the mouth and in Purple or Glow. The Snuffle Ball With Crackles is the crinkle snuffle ball that brings the same dog back down afterwards. One of each, the MeteorBite size at no extra cost, for less than the two bought apart.

How it works

The chase, the sniff, and what the kit is not

Illustrated golden retriever puppy bounding after a purple MeteorBite Ball

The chase: a ball with holes is a ball that breathes

The MeteorBite is a hollow rubber shell with holes right through it. That changes what happens in the worst moment.

  • Passes air, squashes flatA holed shell still passes air, gives a finger something to hook, and squashes flat between finger and thumb instead of wedging. It lowers the risk without removing it.
  • Two sizes, by weight and mouthMedium is 6.5 cm, about a tennis ball, for dogs 8 to 25 kg. Large is 7.5 cm, for dogs of 25 kg and over and for any dog that can close its mouth around a tennis ball.
  • Food-grade rubber, rinses cleanFood-grade rubber, no felt to sand the teeth, rinses clean through the holes.
  • Low throws, no leaping catchesThrow low and short: leaping catches chip canines and load knees and hips.
Illustrated golden retriever puppy lying down, nosing kibble out of the fleece folds of a Snuffle Ball With Crackles

The sniff: the crinkle ball that brings them back down

A dog that has just sprinted for ten minutes is not calm; it is out of breath. Nose work is what brings arousal down.

  • Fleece petals over a crackle layerDozens of overlapping rainbow fleece petals over a crackle layer, so kibble has to be found and nosed out one piece at a time.
  • Two sizes, too big to carryMedium is 15 cm, for dogs to about 15 kg; Large is 20 cm, for bigger dogs and multi-dog homes, one dog at a time, and too big to carry is the point.
  • Washable, with a storage bagMachine washable, tumble dry low or air dry, storage bag included.
  • Foraging toy, not a chew toyThe Snuffle Ball With Crackles is a foraging toy, not a chew toy: the crackle layer is plastic, so it comes out of the room when the food is gone.

The maths, and what the kit is not

The kit costs less than the two bought apart, and its price follows the snuffle ball, whichever MeteorBite you pick. Four things the kit is not.

  • Not a pair of chew toysA dog that settles in to chew either gets a Chewster Donut instead.
  • Not a treatmentNose work settles most dogs, and a dog that panics when left needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist.
  • Not for leaping or puppy fetchThe kit is not for leaping catches or for a puppy's repetitive fetch before the growth plates close.
  • Two sizes, two decisionsThe sizes are two decisions, not one: the MeteorBite by the mouth, the snuffle ball by what the dog can carry.

Three sizing rules

  • The MeteorBite, by the mouth: Medium (6.5 cm, about a tennis ball) for dogs from around 8 to 25 kg; Large (7.5 cm) for dogs of 25 kg and over, and for any dog that can close its mouth with a tennis ball inside. Between sizes, go up: a ball that is slightly big is a carry, a ball that is slightly small is the one that ends up in the back of the throat. The size costs nothing extra in the kit.

  • The snuffle ball, by the carry: Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg, Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg and for homes with more than one dog, used one dog at a time. If your dog can pick the Medium up and parade it, take the Large. The kit price follows this choice.

  • What you save depends on the sizes: the kit costs less than the two bought apart today. Not for power chewers of any size: the MeteorBite is a fetch ball and the snuffle ball is a foraging toy, and a dog that destroys either needs a Chewster Donut or a Chewster Blocky Bone.

Specifications

In the kit
1 x MeteorBite Ball in the size and colour chosen; 1 x Snuffle Ball With Crackles in the size chosen, with its storage bag. Plastic-free packaging
The MeteorBite
Food-grade rubber, hollow, no felt; holes right through the shell; soft enough to flatten between finger and thumb. Medium 6.5 cm (2.5 in), Large 7.5 cm (3 in). Purple, or Glow, whose glow is in the rubber and charges under daylight, a lamp or a phone torch
The snuffle ball
Recycled polyester polar fleece over a built-in plastic crackle layer, odourless, in Rainbow. Medium 15 cm (5.9 in) across, Large 20 cm (7.9 in). Machine wash cold, tumble dry low or air dry
Sizes, and which sets the price
Snuffle ball Medium or Large sets the kit price; MeteorBite Medium or Large costs the same in the kit. Eight combinations, all live
Fill the snuffle ball with
Kibble, dry training treats, freeze-dried meat, broken biscuits, taken out of the day's food allowance. Nothing wet or greasy. The MeteorBite is not a feeder: kibble falls straight out of the holes
Price and saving
Less than the two bought apart, and the MeteorBite size costs nothing extra in the kit. The live compare-ats are the snuffle ball plus a figure neither part carries today, so the strike-through on this page is below the sum of the parts for the sizes chosen
Care
MeteorBite: warm soapy water, shake out through the holes, air dry. Snuffle ball: shake out the crumbs, cold gentle cycle, tumble dry low or air dry. Retire the snuffle ball if the fleece tears or the crackle layer shows through
Also suits
The Medium snuffle ball suits cats, rabbits and ferrets, supervised. The MeteorBite is a dog's fetch ball; under 8 kg, expect a carry rather than a catch
Not a chew toy
Either piece: the MeteorBite comes out for the game and goes away after, the snuffle ball comes out of the room when the food is gone. Chewers take the Chewster Donut or the Chewster Blocky Bone

How to

How to run fetch, then nose work

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy sitting with a purple MeteorBite Ball in its mouth, a Snuffle Ball With Crackles beside it

    Pick the two sizes separately

The MeteorBite by the mouth: if the whole ball fits inside a closed mouth, go up. The snuffle ball by the carry: if your dog can parade the Medium around, take the Large.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy running across grass after a purple MeteorBite Ball

    Fetch first, low and short

Ten minutes, on grass, thrown low so the craters do the work. Leaping catches chip canines and load knees and hips. Charge the Glow under a lamp or in the sun before you go.

  • Illustrated woman putting a purple MeteorBite Ball away in a box, a golden retriever sitting beside her

    Stop before the dog does

You call time, not the dog, and sooner in the heat. The MeteorBite goes away at the end of the game; it is a fetch ball, not a chew toy.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling and tucking kibble into the folds of a Snuffle Ball With Crackles, a golden retriever watching

    Then the snuffle ball

Pack it with dinner and roll it between your hands. Fifteen to thirty minutes of nose work brings the dog down instead of leaving it wired. Stay in the room and pick it up when the food is gone.

  • Illustrated woman rinsing a purple MeteorBite Ball under a tap, a Snuffle Ball With Crackles drying on a rack beside the sink and a golden retriever watching

    Weekly

Rinse the MeteorBite through the holes; wash the snuffle ball cold, tumble dry low or air dry. Retire the snuffle ball if the fleece tears or the crackle layer shows through.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A fetch ball is only as safe as its size. If your dog can close its mouth with the whole MeteorBite inside, it is too small: go up. The holes let air through and give you something to hook if it ever lodges, which lowers the risk without removing it; a ball that does not come straight out is an emergency, go to the nearest vet. Keep throws low for any dog with a hip, elbow or cruciate history, skip repetitive fetch for puppies until the growth plates have closed, and on hot days you call time, not the dog. The snuffle ball is a foraging toy, not a chew toy: inside the fleece is a plastic crackle layer, so a dog that shreds fabric can swallow pieces of both. Supervise every session, remove it once the food is gone, retire it if the fleece tears or the crackle layer shows through, and in a multi-dog home give it to one dog at a time in a separate room. Nose work settles most dogs; it does not treat separation anxiety, and a dog that panics when left needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist.

Why these two

Fetch to burn it off. Nose work to bring them down. In that order.

Most of the wound-up dogs I see have had plenty of exercise and no way to come down from it. Fetch on its own can make that worse: a dog that sprints for twenty minutes finishes higher than it started, and the ball-obsessed ones will not stop until they overheat.

  • Fetch first, then nose workSo the routine at my house is ten minutes of the MeteorBite, thrown low and short so the craters do the work, and then the snuffle ball, packed with the dinner the dog was getting anyway, so the last ten minutes are a nose in fleece and a dog that lies down afterwards.
  • A ball that breathesThe MeteorBite is the ball I designed so I hear fewer ball stories: hollow, with holes right through it, so it breathes and squashes flat if it ever lodges, in two sizes because the size is the safety.
  • Crinkle for the dog that ignores plain fleeceThe Crackles is the snuffle ball for the dog that ignores plain fleece.
  • The honest linesNeither is a chew toy: the MeteorBite comes out for the game and goes away after, and the snuffle ball has a plastic crackle layer inside, so it comes out of the room when the food is gone.
  • The mathsThe kit price follows the snuffle ball and the MeteorBite size is free, so the saving depends on which you pick; the store's strike-through was set on old prices and understates it. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

What is in the kit, and what do I save?

One MeteorBite Ball in the size and colour you pick, and one Snuffle Ball With Crackles in the size you pick, with its storage bag. The kit costs less than the two bought apart and the price follows the snuffle ball only, so what you save depends on the sizes, and the Large MeteorBite is the better value. The price struck through on this page is below the two parts at today's prices for the sizes you have chosen; I checked both pages before writing this.

Why fetch first and then the snuffle ball?

Because fetch on its own leaves many dogs higher than it found them. Ten minutes of chasing a ball that kicks sideways burns the energy; ten minutes of nose work afterwards, with the evening meal packed into the crinkle ball, brings arousal down and the dog lies down. Done the other way round, the dog eats calmly and then gets wound up. Fetch, then sniff, then rest.

    Which sizes should I choose?

Two decisions. The MeteorBite by the mouth: Medium (6.5 cm, about a tennis ball) for dogs from around 8 to 25 kg, Large (7.5 cm) for dogs of 25 kg and over and for any dog that can close its mouth around a tennis ball; between sizes, go up, and the size costs nothing extra. The snuffle ball by the carry: Medium (15 cm) for dogs to about 15 kg, Large (20 cm) above that, and if your dog can parade the Medium around, take the Large. A 20 kg kelpie takes the Medium MeteorBite and the Large snuffle ball.

Does the Glow really glow, and how do I charge it?

Yes. The glow is in the rubber rather than painted on. Hold it under a lamp or in the sun for a few minutes before the walk and it glows green in the dark; a phone torch pressed against it for thirty seconds tops it up in the park.

    Are they chew toys?

No, and we would rather say so here than in a refund email. The MeteorBite is a soft, light, hollow shell built to be thrown, chased and carried; a dog that settles in to chew it will get through it, so it comes out for the game and goes away after. The snuffle ball is fleece over a plastic crackle layer, so it comes out of the room when the food is gone. A dog that destroys either needs a Chewster Donut or a Chewster Blocky Bone.

Is it good for an anxious or bored dog?

The order is the point: fetch burns the energy and nose work brings the dog down, which is why the snuffle ball works before you leave the house, during storms and after an over-excited walk. They are tools, not a treatment: a dog with true separation anxiety needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, and these become one part of it.

    Is it safe for puppies?

The MeteorBite for carrying, rolling and short chases, yes, from about 8 kg in the Medium; skip repetitive fetch and leaping catches until the growth plates have closed, which in a large breed is well past the first birthday. The snuffle ball suits any puppy that has moved to kibble, supervised, and a puppy that starts chewing either toy rather than playing with it gets a Chewster instead.

What if something arrives damaged, or I picked the wrong size?

Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice, with a photo, your order number and which ball it is, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A ball destroyed by an enthusiastic dog is the wrong toy for that dog, and the Chewster Donut is the right one.
