How it works

Most collars hang the ID tag and the lead off the same D-ring, so the tag gets crushed under the clip, wears through in a year, and jangles against the lead all walk.

The 3M reflective stitching runs the length of the webbing, so the collar throws light back from every angle, not just the side facing the road.

Measure the neck where the collar sits and go up if you are between sizes.
Size guide

Neck 27 to 37 cm11 to 15 in · About 4 to 10 kg · 2 cm webbing · 50 g

Neck 32 to 47 cm13 to 19 in · About 10 to 25 kg · 2.5 cm webbing · 70 g

Neck 41 to 64 cm16 to 25 in · About 25 kg and up · 2.5 cm webbing · 80 g

Measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar naturally sits, low on the neck, snug but not tight. Small 27 to 37 cm, Medium 32 to 47 cm, Large 41 to 64 cm. The dog-weight bands are a guide; the tape decides.
Between two sizes, go up. A collar at the very end of its adjustment has no room for a winter coat or a growing puppy, and a Small on a 37 cm neck is a Medium waiting to happen.
Fit check: two fingers flat under the collar, no more. Re-check a puppy every two weeks and every dog when the coat changes. A dog whose head is narrower than its neck (greyhound, whippet, some collies) can back out of any flat collar and walks on the harness.

How to

Soft tape around the neck where the collar sits, snug. Use the size table; between sizes, go up.

Clip it on, slide the adjuster until two fingers slide flat under the webbing and no more. Looser than that and a dog backs out; tighter and it rubs and coughs.

The Smart ID Tag goes on the separate ring. The lead clips to the D-ring on a calm walker; a dog that pulls walks on the Explorer Harness and keeps the collar for ID.

Take the collar off for unsupervised crate time and when two dogs play rough. Jaws and crate bars catch collars; the quick-release buckle is for the moment you did not.

Webbing at the buckle, stitching at the rings, the buckle's click. Puppies get re-measured every two weeks. Retire it when the webbing frays or the buckle no longer snaps clean.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A collar is for identification and, on a calm walker, the lead. A dog that pulls hard should walk on a harness: repeated pressure on the throat damages the windpipe, raises pressure inside the eyes, and in small and flat-faced breeds can worsen a collapsing trachea. Fit to two fingers flat. Take the collar off for unsupervised crate time and during rough play between dogs; a jaw or a crate bar caught in a collar is a strangulation emergency, and the quick-release buckle is for the human who arrives in time. Never attach a tie-out or a long line to a collar, and never leave a check chain or a slip lead on an unattended dog.

Why I designed it
I have said on the harness page that the dog who pulls for years into a collar ends up in my consult room with a sore throat, a cough, and in small breeds a windpipe that starts to collapse. So I want to be straight about what this collar is for.

I have three colours now and they wash easily and have never broken. They match the leashes and fit tracking devices if I chose. They feel more durable and built to last than others on the market.
I was looking for a collar lightweight enough for my small breed that wouldn't drag her head down but durable enough to last. The Explorer Collar hits that balance perfectly — my dog barely notices she's wearing it, but the construction feels genuinely solid. The purple is beautiful against her fur and it's held its colour through regular washing. The quick-release buckle gives me confidence that if she ever got snagged on something, I could get her free instantly.
The quick-release buckle is excellent: firm enough not to release accidentally but easy to operate with one hand in any situation. The tag ring hasn't bent or misshapen despite carrying two tags for six months. The fit is consistently comfortable with the adjustable sizing and the breathable material hasn't caused any rubbing.

FAQ
No, and no flat collar is. A collar cannot redirect a pull the way a front-clip harness does; it can only take the force on the throat. If your dog pulls, walk them on the Explorer Harness with the lead on the front D-ring and keep this collar on for the ID tag and the reflective stitching. Once loose-lead walking is reliable, the lead can move to the collar's D-ring for calm walks.
Measure the neck with a soft tape where the collar sits, snug but not tight. Small is 27 to 37 cm (about 4 to 10 kg: cavaliers, dachshunds, cavoodles), Medium 32 to 47 cm (about 10 to 25 kg: kelpies, collies, staffies), Large 41 to 64 cm (25 kg and up: goldens, Labradors, shepherds). The ranges overlap on purpose; between sizes, go up, so the collar is not at the end of its adjustment with a winter coat or a growing puppy still to come.
Two fingers flat between the collar and the neck, no more and no less. Looser and a dog can back out of it, especially one with a head narrower than its neck; tighter and it rubs, coughs and, in a growing puppy, becomes dangerous within weeks. Re-check a puppy every two weeks and any dog when the coat changes.
During the day, yes: it is light (50 to 80 g), breathable and water-resistant. Take it off for unsupervised time in a crate and when two dogs play rough. A collar caught on a crate bar or in another dog's jaw is a strangulation emergency I have treated; the quick-release buckle helps if you are there, and taking it off means you do not need to be.
Yes, that is what it is for. The Smart ID Tag clips to the separate tag ring, so it stays readable and off the lead D-ring, where tags get crushed under the clip and wear through. Council tags and a GPS tracker's clip fit the same ring.
Water-resistant: it copes with rain, the beach and the hose, dries quickly and rinses clean. It is nylon, so a dog that swims daily or rolls in mud every walk is better off in the Sealskin Collar, which is waterproof biothane and wipes clean without ever smelling.
Yes, from the Small band at about 27 cm of neck. Fit it to two fingers, re-measure every two weeks, and expect to move up a size during the first year. A puppy learns to walk on the harness; the collar carries the tag.
