Sealskin Leash
The lead for the dog that gets wet every day. Coated webbing with no fabric core, so sea water, mud, sand and smell have nowhere to soak in: rinse, wipe, dry, done. 180 cm of strong, stretch-free webbing, an aluminium carabiner clip that locks, swivels and cannot rust, nine colours that match the Sealskin Collar and Harness, and a Glow that charges in daylight. The lead that goes in the sea and comes out clean.

How it works
Why a lead with no fabric in it is the one for the beach

No fabric core, so nothing soaks in and nothing smells
A nylon lead is a wick: it draws up sea water at the clip end, holds sand in the weave, and dries slowly from the outside in, which is why it is still damp in the boot the next morning and why the smell arrives a day after the swim.
- PVC-coated, no fabric coreThe Sealskin is PVC-coated webbing with no fabric core.
- Rinse it or wipe itWater beads on it, mud slides off it, and the whole cleaning routine is a rinse under the tap or a wipe with the towel you already brought for the dog.
- Sun, cold and heatIt does not stiffen in the sun or crack in the cold, it does not go tacky in the heat, and it is lighter than leather while feeling much the same in the hand.
- An embossed grip, a soft loopThe embossed surface gives your grip something to hold when the lead is wet, and the plain loop handle is the same webbing all the way round, soft to hold and the same soft when it is soaked.

A clip that locks, turns and cannot rust, because the beach is where clips fail
Most lead clips are a spring-loaded snap hook, and salt water finds the spring. It rusts, the gate gets sticky, and the failure is not that it breaks; it is that it stays open, usually the moment a dog pulls sideways against a ring.
- An aluminium carabinerThis clip is an aluminium carabiner with a locking sleeve on the gate and a swivel at its base, the same clip as on the Explorer Adjustable Leash.
- A sleeve locks the gateTurn the sleeve and the gate cannot be pushed open against a harness ring or a fence wire.
- A full-circle swivelThe swivel turns a full circle, so the lead never twists when the dog circles you in the shallows.
- Rustproof, rinse after the beachAluminium does not rust. Rinse it in fresh water after the beach and let it dry open, because sand in the sleeve is the one thing that stops it turning cleanly.

Strong enough for the big dog, and honest about what a lead cannot do
A 40 kg dog hitting the end of 180 cm of it will not break it, and neither will a year of salt.
- No stretch for a reactive dogThere is no stretch, so a lunge stops where you stop, which is what a dog that reacts on the lead needs.
- A lead cannot stop pullingWhat it cannot do is stop pulling. Nothing you clip to a dog does that; a front-clip harness redirects the pull and training removes it.
- Never a collar, never your handSo on a dog that pulls, this lead goes on the harness, front ring for the training walk, and never on a collar, and it is never wrapped round your hand: the webbing will hold, and a finger will not.
- 180 cm, the everyday length180 cm is the everyday walking length, long enough for a sniff along the verge, short enough to gather in when the path narrows.
Size guide
Sealskin Leash length and fit guide
Three fit rules
-
One length for every colour: 180 cm (6 ft) of 2.5 cm coated webbing, about 320 g with the clip. That is the everyday walking length: long enough for a sniff along a verge, short enough to gather in two hands when the path narrows.
-
For dogs from about 5 kg. Under that, the aluminium clip is heavy hanging off a small collar, so clip it to the harness or choose a lighter lead. No upper limit on the dog: the webbing and the clip are rated far beyond any dog, which is why your grip, not the lead, is the thing to look after.
-
No stretch and no shock absorption, on purpose. For running with a dog that hits the end of the lead, the Explorer Bungee Leash. For town, training and three lengths from one lead, the Explorer Adjustable Leash. For the beach, the rain, the mud and the dog that smells, this one.

How to
How to use and look after a waterproof lead

Harness for a dog that pulls
The clip goes on the harness for any dog that pulls and for any dog under about 5 kg. On a calm walker the D-ring of the Sealskin Collar is fine, and the tag stays on the collar either way.

Lock the gate
Clip on, then turn the sleeve until the gate cannot be pressed open. Check it with a thumb before every road crossing. Sand in the sleeve is the one thing that stops it turning, so rinse it after the beach.

Hold it, never wrap it
Hand through the loop, thumb over the webbing. Never wrap a lead round your hand, wrist or fingers: this webbing will not break when a big dog lunges, and a finger with the lead wound round it will.

Rinse, wipe, done
After the sea, the dam or the mud: rinse the lead and the clip under the tap, wipe with the dog towel, hang it or throw it in the boot. It is dry in a minute and it will not smell tomorrow.

Check it monthly
The stitching at the handle and at the clip end, the swivel spinning freely, the sleeve locking. Retire any lead when the stitching lifts or a gate no longer closes clean.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, emergency veterinarian
A lead does not stop a dog pulling; a front-clip harness and training do. Clip this lead to a harness for any dog that pulls and for any dog under about 5 kg, because repeated jerks on a collar bruise the windpipe and in small breeds can worsen a collapsing trachea. Never wrap a lead around your hand or wrist: coated webbing does not break when a big dog lunges, and a finger with the lead wound round it does. The clip is locked only when the sleeve is turned; check it before every road. There is no shock absorption, so a dog that hits the end of this lead at a run takes the jolt through whatever it is clipped to, which is one more reason for the harness. Two beach notes from the emergency room: rinse the clip so sand never jams the gate, and offer fresh water on the sand, because a dog that gulps sea water while fetching can vomit, get diarrhoea and, in quantity, become dangerously salt-loaded. Never attach a tie-out or a long line to a collar.

Why I designed it
The lead that goes in the sea and comes out clean. That is the whole idea.
Golden retrievers swim, and I live with two of them, so I know what a nylon lead is like after a beach summer: stiff with salt, gritty with sand in the weave, damp for a day, smelling for a week, and the same smell on your hand and the car seat. The lead gets wetter than anything else the dog wears, because it is the thing you drop on the sand and drag through the shallows while you call them out.
- No fabric coreSo the Sealskin Leash has no fabric to hold any of it. It is coated webbing right through: sea water, mud and whatever the beach offers cannot soak in, a rinse under the tap takes them off, and it is dry in a wipe with no smell left, because there was nowhere for the smell to live.
- The clip took longer to get rightThe clip took longer to get right than the webbing. Salt water eats cheap snap hooks: the spring rusts, the gate sticks, and one day it sticks open, which is how a beach dog ends up loose on the road above the car park. This one is an aluminium carabiner with a locking sleeve on the gate and a swivel at the base. It cannot rust, it cannot be pushed open against a harness ring, and it never twists.
- The honest thingThe webbing is rated by the maker for far more than any dog can pull, and that is exactly why I will say the honest thing: the lead will not be the weak point, so make sure your hand is not. Never wrap it round your fingers.
- If your dog pullsA dog that pulls walks on the Sealskin Harness, because a lead does not stop pulling, and this one has no stretch, so a lunge stops where you stop.
- Nine coloursNine colours match the Sealskin Collar and Harness, and the Glow charges in daylight for the walk back in the dark.
- Tested at homeBridie and Kiko tested every version, mostly wet.

This is so pretty. It is vividly colored, water proof, and very soft to hold in my hand. It matches my dog's collar!

Is it really waterproof, and does it stop the smell?
Yes to both, for the reason that matters: there is no fabric in it. Coated webbing does not absorb water, so there is nothing for sea water, dam water or mud to soak into and nothing for bacteria to live in, which is where the smell of an old nylon lead comes from. Rinse it or wipe it and it is dry and clean in a minute. Sand does not lodge in it either, which is what makes a nylon lead go stiff after a beach summer. The matching Sealskin Collar works the same way, and the two together are the Swimmer Bundle.
Is this a lead for a dog that pulls?
It is strong enough for one, and it is not a cure for one. Nothing you clip to a dog stops pulling; a front-clip harness redirects the pull and training removes it. What this lead gives the owner of a puller is strength with no stretch, so a lunge stops where you stop, and a clip that cannot be pushed open against a ring. Clip it to the Sealskin Harness, never to a collar, and never wrap it round your hand: the lead will not be the weak point, and a finger will.
Sealskin Leash, Bungee Leash or Adjustable Leash: which one?
If your dog swims, wades or gets rained on most weeks, or your current lead smells, this one: nothing soaks in and it wipes clean. If you run or hike with a dog that hits the end of the lead, the Explorer Bungee Leash, because the bungee takes the jolt out of your shoulder and out of the dog. If you want town, training and sniff walks from one lead at three lengths, the Explorer Adjustable Leash. Plenty of homes own the Sealskin for the beach and one of the Explorer leads for the week.
How long and how heavy is it, and will it suit a small dog?
One length, 180 cm (6 ft), in 2.5 cm webbing, about 320 g with the clip. That is the everyday walking length. From about 5 kg: under that, the aluminium clip is heavy hanging off a small collar, so clip it to the harness or choose a lighter lead. There is no upper limit on the dog; the limit is whether you can hold what is on the other end.
Does the clip lock, and will it rust at the beach?
The clip is an aluminium carabiner with a locking sleeve on the gate and a swivel at the base. Turn the sleeve and the gate cannot be pushed open against a harness ring or a fence wire, which is how dogs on spring snap hooks end up loose. Aluminium does not rust. Rinse it in fresh water after salt water and let it dry open: sand in the sleeve is the one thing that stops it turning cleanly. The swivel turns a full circle, so the lead unwinds itself when the dog circles you.
Is it real biothane, and is it rubber?
It is PVC-coated webbing with no fabric core, which is the family of material sold as biothane. It is not rubber, although the coating has that soft, slightly grippy feel in the hand. In use the difference is nil: it is the coating with no core that makes it waterproof and smell-proof, and that is what you are buying.
How does the Glow colour work, and is it reflective?
The Glow lead is cream by day. It charges under daylight or a lamp and glows green in the dark for a while afterwards, brightest in the first hour, so you can see the line between you and the dog on the walk home. It is a glow, not a reflector: it does not throw headlights back, so for road walks after dark add a clip-on light. The other eight colours have no reflective element.
What if it arrives damaged or I chose the wrong colour?
Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice, with a photo and your order number. Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are fully covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Wrong colour and unused in its packaging? Email within 14 days and we will look at a swap.
