Tag & Sniff Bundle

The two things a new dog needs first: a way home on the collar and ten minutes of nose work a day. One Snuffle Ball, Medium or Large in eight colours, whose deep fleece folds turn a bowl of kibble into twenty quiet minutes, and one Medium Smart ID Tag in any of fourteen designs, battery-free QR and NFC ID with a free profile for life. Less than the two bought apart.

How it works

Why these two, how each works, and what the kit is not

Illustrated golden retriever puppy nosing into the fleece folds of a green Snuffle Ball, a woman kneeling beside it

Ten minutes of nose work a day, from the first week

A dog's brain runs on its nose, and most of the trouble a new dog gets into is a brain with nothing to do. The Snuffle Ball is dozens of overlapping fleece petals.

  • Fifteen to thirty minutes of foragingA bowl that was gone in thirty seconds becomes fifteen to thirty minutes of foraging, and the fast eater slows down without a special bowl.
  • No crackle, nothing but fleeceThis is the plain, quiet version, with no crackle layer. There is nothing inside but fleece, and a torn petal is cloth, not plastic.
  • Sized too big to carryMedium (15 cm) for dogs to about 15 kg, Large (20 cm) above that, and too big to carry is the point, because a ball your dog can parade around becomes a chew toy.
  • Not a chew toyThe ball is a foraging toy, not a chew toy: stay in the room, pick it up when the food is gone, and give a fabric shredder a Chewster Blocky Bone instead.

ID on the collar before the first walk

A new dog does not know the way home yet, and the first week is when gates get left open. The Smart ID Tag is silicone with a printed QR code and an embedded NFC chip.

  • Any phone, no app, no batteryAny phone camera reads the code and any recent iPhone or Android reads NFC with a tap. Nothing to download, nothing to sign up for, no battery to be flat.
  • Free profile, edited in the appThe profile is free for life and lives in the Ask A Vet app, where you edit it: a new number is a thirty-second change, not a new tag.
  • Medium, on a standard collarThe tag in this kit is the Medium, for dogs from about 10 kg on a standard collar.
  • Silent silicone, checked monthlyAbout 10 g, no metal edges, silent, waterproof. Check it monthly for splits, because a housemate can chew any silicone tag.

The maths, and what the kit is not

The kit costs less than a Snuffle Ball and the Medium Smart ID Tag bought apart, with either ball.

  • Not a Small tagThe tag is the Medium in both kits, so a cat or a dog under 10 kg buys the Medium ball and the Small tag apart.
  • Not a treatmentSniffing settles most dogs, and a dog that panics when left needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, with the ball as one part of it.
  • Not a trackerA tag tells you where your dog was scanned, not where it is now, and the Track & Scan Bundle adds the tracker.
  • Not a microchip substituteThe kit is not a substitute for the microchip.

Three sizing rules

  • The ball: Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg, Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg, and too big to carry is the point: if your dog can pick the Medium up and parade it, take the Large. Not for fabric shredders of any size.

  • The tag: the Medium Smart ID Tag in every kit, which suits dogs from about 10 kg on a standard collar. A cat or a dog under 10 kg wants the Small, which the kit does not offer: buy the Medium ball and the Small tag apart, and put a cat's tag on a breakaway collar.

  • What you save: the kit costs less than the ball and the Medium tag bought apart today, with either ball. No plan and no subscription behind the tag; the profile is free for life.

How to

How to start a new dog on both

  • Illustrated woman sitting cross-legged with the dog's profile open on her phone, a golden retriever puppy beside her wearing an Avocado Smart ID Tag

Tag first, before the first walk

Split ring through the collar's D-ring, or the Slide-On threaded onto the collar; two fingers under the collar. Scan the tag with your own phone, follow it into the Ask A Vet app and build the profile: a photo, two phone numbers, the medical notes. Test it with a second phone.

  • Illustrated woman setting a few treats on top of a green Snuffle Ball while a golden retriever puppy watches

    First snuffle session, easy

A few smelly treats sitting on top of the folds, and let your dog watch you put them there. A quick win, not a puzzle.

  • Illustrated woman tucking kibble into the folds of a green Snuffle Ball, a food bowl at her knee and a golden retriever puppy watching

    Then bury dinner

Push kibble into the folds and roll the ball between your hands. Most dogs are busy for 15 to 30 minutes, and the food comes out of the day's allowance.

  • Illustrated woman sitting beside a golden retriever lying with its nose in a green Snuffle Ball, rain on the window behind them

Stay in the room, use it on purpose

Fleece, not a chew toy: watch the session and pick the ball up when the food is gone. Ten minutes before you leave the house, after a walk when the zoomies start, during storms and visitors.

  • Illustrated woman checking the Avocado Smart ID Tag on a golden retriever's collar, a green Snuffle Ball drying on a rack by the washing machine and the dog's profile open on a phone

    Weekly wash, monthly check

Cold gentle cycle and air dry for the ball. Once a month look at the tag for splits and check the ring has not opened, and change the profile the day a number changes.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

Two things that are both true. The ball is a foraging toy, not a chew toy: there is no plastic inside, but swallowed fleece is still a foreign body, so supervise every session, take the ball away once the food is gone, give it to one dog at a time in a multi-dog home, and retire it if the petals tear. Sniffing settles most dogs; it does not treat separation anxiety, and a dog that panics when left needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, with the ball as one part of it. The tag is the fastest way home and the microchip is the permanent one: keep both, and keep the chip registry current. A tag tells you where your dog was scanned, not where they are now. The tag in this kit is the Medium, so a cat or a dog under 10 kg gets the Small on its own page, on a breakaway collar for a cat. Any silicone tag can be chewed by a housemate: check it monthly and replace one that splits.

Why these two

The first two things I would put in a new dog's basket.

Hand me a new dog and one shopping trip and these are the two things I buy before anything else.

  • Tag before the first walkThe tag goes on the collar before the first walk, because a dog does not need to be lost for long to be lost for good, and a silicone tag with a QR code and an NFC chip means whoever finds them is talking to you in under a minute, with no app and no battery.
  • The cheapest calm you can buyThe snuffle ball is the cheapest calm you can buy: a bowl of kibble that took thirty seconds becomes twenty minutes of a dog using its nose, and a dog that finishes calmer than it started. Ten minutes of that a day does more for a wound-up dog than another lap of the block.
  • The honest linesThe kit costs less than the two bought apart today, so the saving is real but modest; the store's strike-through says more than that. The tag in the kit is the Medium, for dogs from about 10 kg, so a cat or a small dog is better served buying the Medium ball and the Small tag apart until the kit offers the choice.
  • A foraging toy, not a chew toyThe ball is a foraging toy, not a chew toy, and sniffing settles a dog without treating anything.
  • Not a tracker, not a chipThe tag tells you where your dog was scanned, not where it is now, and nothing on a collar replaces the microchip. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

What is in the kit, and what do I save?

One Snuffle Ball in the size and colour you pick, with its storage bag, and one Medium Smart ID Tag in the design you pick, with a free lifetime profile. The kit costs less than the Snuffle Ball and the Medium tag bought apart today, with either ball. The price struck through on this page is above the two parts at today's prices; I checked both pages before writing this.

Which tag size is in the kit?

The Medium, in both kits, which suits dogs from about 10 kg on a standard collar. The listing does not offer the Small. For a cat or a dog under 10 kg, buy the Medium ball and the Small tag apart, and put a cat's tag on a breakaway collar that opens if it catches.

Which ball size should I choose?

Medium (15 cm) for dogs up to about 15 kg, Large (20 cm) for dogs over 15 kg. The ball should be too big for your dog to pick up and carry; if they can parade around with the Medium, you want the Large. Between sizes, go up. A dog that tears soft toys apart needs a rubber toy such as the Chewster Blocky Bone, not a snuffle ball.

Do I need an app or a subscription for the tag?

No subscription, ever, and no app for the finder: a QR code opens in any phone camera and NFC works with a tap on any recent iPhone or Android, and they land on the profile in a browser and can call you from it. You use the Ask A Vet app once to set the profile up and again whenever a number changes. The profile is free for life.

Is the snuffle ball good for an anxious or bored dog?

Sniffing and foraging are the fastest ways I know to bring a dog's arousal down, which is why the ball works before you leave the house, during storms and after an over-excited walk, and the quiet version is the one for a dog that startles at noise. It is a tool, not a treatment: a dog with true separation anxiety needs a plan from a vet or a behaviourist, and the ball becomes one part of it.

Can I leave my dog alone with the ball?

No. It is fleece. Watch the session, take the ball away when the food is gone, and give a fabric shredder a rubber toy such as the Chewster Blocky Bone instead. Most torn snuffle balls are torn after the food ran out and nobody picked them up.

Is the tag a GPS tracker?

No. A tag tells you where your dog was scanned, not where they are now. If you want the live dot and the fence alert as well, the Track & Scan Bundle is a tag with the Smart GPS & Health Tracker.

What if something arrives damaged, or the ring opens?

Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice, with a photo, your order number and which part it is, and it is covered. A ring that opens later is a replacement ring, not a new tag; a tag whose surface splits is replaced. A ball shredded by an enthusiastic dog is the wrong toy for that dog, and the Chewster Blocky Bone is the right one. Change of mind: considered within 14 days, unused and in the original packaging.
