  1. 0:04 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 What have I got here today? This is actually a part of our top-of-the-line stuff, which is the Vet Orthopedic range.
  3. 0:17 These ones here that I'm showing you today are called the Bouclé or Bouche. I don't know how to pronounce that. I think it's Bouclé: B-O-U-C-L-E.
  4. 0:24 It's kind of a material that's like a knitted material, but it has those lumpy bits on it. I don't know—can I show you on the screen? See what I mean? It's very fancy.
  5. 0:33 Anyway, so why would you get this? Like, you've got the bolster on the side. There are other brands that sell this style of bed as well.
  6. 0:40 I have gone with a lower height on the edge. So, you know, it is meant to be an orthopedic bed so that if your dog wants to put their head over the edge, it's not going to be kinking it or pushing it up too much. Obviously, it might a little bit, but you know, I've gone with a lower edge for all the sizes of beds than competitors because then your dog can kind of lie over the side.
  7. 0:59 These beds, you know, come with a center part, which is like the center cushion. You can zip it out, and then from there, you can wash that fabric or that cushion. You can wash that.
  8. 1:11 It also comes with a waterproof cover. And now you can see that this also has the lavender-infused memory foam. So, this purple is lavender-infused memory foam.
  9. 1:21 Also soft memory foam, you know, this is really nice. It's like nice orthopedic memory foam.
  10. 1:41 Maybe not the cheapest price, but I'm making sure that I do sell a premium product with the least amount of issues.
  11. 1:50 Like here, you know, you've got a waterproof cover. If your dog wees on it or wants to, you know, poo, you know, you can take this out. It's not going to affect the memory foam and you can wash the bed.
  12. 1:58 These come with a grippy dot back on the bottom like all my beds. This doesn't stick to, you know, carpet and other fabric, but on wooden surfaces, tiles, you know, flat, slick surfaces, these grippy dots will grip a little bit at the start. But the longer you leave it in the one spot, the dog will be lying on that and putting pressure on it. Also, the bed, you know, its weight, these do grip more and more over time.
  13. 2:21 So, when you do have to pull them off, you can feel they are stuck to the floor. They are quite good.
  14. 2:28 So, let's open this whole thing up and I can show you what's inside. So, the zipper goes all the way around. Yeah, all the way around. I can probably take that off. Yeah, it did clip off.
  15. 2:41 So yeah, you can just wash this, you know, on a slow spin cycle and like cold is the best way to wash all this. Obviously, if there's disgusting poo and things like that on it, try and use stuff that's going to, you know, give it a bit of a clean and a wash, antibacterial stuff.
  16. 2:56 But anyway, look, these are really easy to wash. You know, this comes in a nice waterproof case. This bolster, the wall, you do have a, you know, a waterproof cover. So, in case your dog does something disgusting like vomits, it's going to make sure that your bed will still last the test of time.
  17. 3:13 So, look, it comes in black, cream, and gray. I did choose to have slightly lower walls than the others, so your dog can lean its head over the side.
  18. 3:21 This stuff is great. This is the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic range by Dr. Duncan.

How it works

Why the SNÜZ is the bed for big, heavy and arthritic dogs

Illustrated cutaway of a cream WOOPF™ SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed with labels for the bouclé outer fabric cover, waterproof inner cover, lavender-infused memory foam, dense orthopedic memory foam in the bolsters and YKK zippers

Built for the weight of a big dog

The dogs that most need an orthopedic bed are the ones that flatten an ordinary one: Labradors, Shepherds, Rottweilers, and any big dog past eight.

  • Memory foam on topTwo centimetres take the shape of the hip and shoulder and spread the load off the bony points.
  • Denser support foam underneathFive centimetres stop the whole thing bottoming out under 40 kilos.
  • What a hard floor does to a big dogThat is what the elbow callus and the hygroma are about: a heavy dog lying on a hard surface, night after night.
  • How most big dogs actually sleepThe Large is 115 by 90 cm, big enough for a golden retriever to sleep flat on its side.

Waterproof inner covers, because old dogs leak

Older desexed females dribble in their sleep more often than owners like to admit.

  • Post-op dogs and puppiesPost-op dogs come home with drains and ointments, and puppies are puppies.
  • Waterproof insideEvery SNÜZ has a 100% waterproof inner cover on the cushion and on the bolsters.
  • The foam never sees itAn accident stays on the surface instead of soaking into foam you can never wash.
  • Zip-off boucléThe bouclé outer cover zips off and goes in the machine; the inner cover wipes clean.

Bolsters all round, and a base that stays put

Memory foam bolsters 15 cm high for the dogs that rest a head or wedge a back against something.

  • A base that stays putThe base is a grippy rubber-dot fabric so the bed does not skate when a big dog turns three circles before lying down.
  • A mild lavender scentThe foam carries a mild lavender scent.
  • A calm cue, not a treatmentTreat the scent as a calm cue for a dog settling into a new bed, not as a treatment for anything.

Three sizing rules

  • Measure your dog lying down, nose to the base of the tail. For a dog that curls up, choose a bed at least 15 cm wider than that number; for a dog that stretches out, 30 cm.

  • Weight bands: Small for cats and dogs to 12 kg, Medium for 12 to 30 kg, Large for 30 to 55 kg or any dog that sleeps stretched out. Between sizes, go up.

  • A small or short-legged dog, a senior that struggles to step over 15 cm, or a dog just home from surgery may be better on the SNÖR, the lower and lighter bed in the range.

How to

How to move your dog onto an orthopedic bed

  • Illustrated golden retriever curled up on a grey SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed in the corner of a room

Put it where they already sleep

Dogs choose spots, not beds. Same room, same corner, on top of wherever the old bed was. Move it to where you would like it a week later.

  • Illustrated woman unzipping the base cover of an upturned cream SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed to show the foam

    Give the foam a day

It ships compressed. Unzip the cover, let the foam recover for 24 to 48 hours before you judge the base, and expect the memory foam layer to soften a little as it warms under a dog.

  • Illustrated woman holding out a treat as a golden retriever steps onto a cream SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed

    Lure, do not lift

A few treats on the far bolster, a meal fed on the bed, praise when they step in. Lifting a sore big dog onto a bed hurts you both and teaches nothing.

  • Illustrated golden retriever stepping off a cream SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed onto a mat in front of it

    Fix the floor in front

A senior still has to push off the floor to get up. On tiles or floorboards, put a non-slip mat or rug in front of the bed.

  • Illustrated woman loading the cream cover of a SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed into a washing machine

    Wash the cover every fortnight

Unzip the bouclé cover and machine wash it cold on a gentle cycle, air dry. Wipe the waterproof inner cover; never put the foam in the machine. A bed that smells wrong gets abandoned for the couch.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A bed is comfort, not treatment. Stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump or use stairs, licking at one joint, or a limp that lasts more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination, not a better bed. A callused elbow is normal on a big dog; a soft, fluid-filled swelling over the elbow is a hygroma and wants a vet before it becomes an abscess, and a padded bed is part of how it is managed. Orthopedic bedding is one part of arthritis care, alongside weight control, sensible exercise, joint support and the pain relief your vet prescribes.

Why I designed it

Big dogs wear their beds out from the inside. The SNÜZ is the one in the range built to carry them.

The SNÜZ is the heavy bed in the range for that reason.

  • Hips and elbows on the floorPut a 35 kg dog on a soft, loose-filled bed and within a fortnight its hips and elbows are resting on the floor with a layer of fluff over the top.
  • You can see the result in any waiting roomThe callused elbows and the fluid-filled hygromas that big dogs grow from lying on hard surfaces, and the three stiff steps every morning.
  • Two layers of foamTwo centimetres of memory foam take the shape of the hip and shoulder, five centimetres of support foam underneath stop it bottoming out.
  • Flat instead of curledThe Large is 115 by 90 so a golden retriever can lie flat instead of curled.
  • Zip-off bouclé, waterproof insideThe inner covers are waterproof because old dogs leak in their sleep and post-op dogs have drains, and the bouclé outer zips off for the machine.
  • It is not the light, low bedThat is the SNÖR, and I would rather you bought the right one than the pretty one. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    • Our girl is getting along in years turning 12 this year. This bed is great for her and she does relax when she is on it. Being a bit arthritic, this bed takes the pressure off her joints and allows her to snooze comfortably. We bought two different beds and she loves them both.

    • We absolutely love the style and love that it has a waterproof layer underneath, making it super easy to clean. Our dog (and our cat lol) took to it very quickly and made themselves comfortable!

What makes a dog bed orthopedic, and is this one?

Nobody regulates the word, so look past it. What matters is a foam base that does not bottom out under the hip and shoulder, a shape the dog can get into without jumping, and a cover you can wash. The SNÜZ has a two-layer base, 2 cm of memory foam over 5 cm of support foam, memory foam bolsters and covers that zip off and wash. It is the heaviest build in the WOOPF™ range and the one for big dogs and advanced arthritis; the lighter, lower bed for small dogs and post-op patients is the SNÖR.

Which size does my dog need?

Small for cats and dogs up to 12 kg, Medium for 12 to 30 kg, Large for 30 to 55 kg or any dog that sleeps stretched out on its side. Measure your dog lying down from nose to the base of the tail and pick a bed at least 15 cm wider than that for a curler, 30 cm for a stretcher. Between sizes, go up. A golden retriever or a Labrador that sleeps flat needs the Large.

SNÜZ or SNÖR: which orthopedic bed should I buy?

SNÜZ if your dog is big or heavy, or has advanced arthritis: it runs to 115 x 90 cm, carries the two-layer base and has waterproof inner covers. SNÖR if your dog is small or medium, older, short-legged or recovering from surgery and the priority is getting in and out without a step; it is also the entry price in the range. Same brand, same washable covers, different job.

    Bouclé, suede or corduroy?

Same bed, same foam, same sizes and prices; only the outer cover changes, and each fabric is its own listing. Bouclé, on this page, is the soft looped fabric in the photos and the warmest of the three. Suede is smoother and shows less hair. Corduroy is ribbed and the most forgiving of claws. A serious digger does best with the SNÜZ Dig-Proof and Waterproof Cover over any of them. All three covers sold separately fit all three fabrics.

    Is it really waterproof?

The inner covers are: the cushion and the bolsters each have a 100% waterproof inner cover under the bouclé, so an accident stays on the surface and never reaches the foam. The bouclé outer cover is not waterproof; it zips off and goes in the machine. For a dog that leaks every night, or a puppy in training, the Dig-Proof and Waterproof Cover goes over the whole bed and wipes clean.

Is the lavender safe for dogs and cats?

The scent is set into the foam, not applied as an oil that a pet can lick or roll in, and for most dogs it is a mild calm cue at best. Cats are more sensitive to essential oils than dogs, so if the Small is for a cat, or your pet has airway disease, air the bed for a day before first use and skip it if they avoid it. It is not a sedative and it does not treat anxiety.

    How do I wash it?

Unzip the bouclé cover and machine wash it cold on a gentle cycle, then air dry; heat shrinks and mats bouclé. Wipe the waterproof inner covers with a damp cloth. Never put the foam in the machine. Every fortnight in normal use, sooner after an accident. Bouclé does shed a little lint in the first wash; it settles.

What if the size is wrong, or it arrives damaged?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A bed a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure your dog lying down before you order, and keep the box until you are sure.
