How it works
Why the Smart ID Tag gets dogs home faster than a microchip alone

No app for the finder, so no excuses
Every phone camera reads a QR code, and every recent iPhone and Android reads NFC with a tap.
- Straight to your dog's profileEither way the finder lands on your dog's profile: your numbers, a backup contact, emergency instructions, allergies, medications, diet notes, your vet clinic and whether your dog is friendly.
- Nothing to downloadNothing to download, nothing to sign up for, nothing to go wrong at the exact moment you need it to work.

An alert with a location the moment it is scanned
When someone scans the tag you get a notification straight away, with the location of the scan where the finder's phone allows it.
- You know where to headYou know your dog has been found before the finder has finished reading the page, and you know roughly where to head.
- Nothing to chargeNothing to charge, because the tag has no battery: the finder's phone does the work.
Silicone that stays silent and stays on
Soft, pet-safe silicone, about 10 grams, waterproof and chew-resistant.
- Silent on the collarNo jingling against the bowl at 3 am, no metal edges, nothing to rust.
- Hanging or Slide-OnChoose a hanging tag in eleven food designs or classic Black and White, or the Slide-On, which threads onto the collar and sits flat with nothing to snag on a bush or a crate.

Three sizing rules
-
Small for cats and dogs up to about 10 kg, and for thin collars. Medium for dogs over 10 kg on a standard collar.
-
Choose the Slide-On for swimmers, bush dogs and cats: it sits flat on the collar with nothing to dangle, snag or chew.
-
One tag per collar. If your dog has a walking collar and a harness, or you have two pets, the Two ID Tags Bundle costs less than two single tags.

How to
How to set up a QR code dog tag in five minutes

Attach it
Hanging tags clip to the collar's D-ring on their split ring. The Slide-On threads onto the collar itself and sits flat.

Activate the profile
Scan your own tag with your phone camera. It walks you into the free Ask A Vet app to create your pet's profile. Two minutes, no card.

Write what a stranger needs
Two phone numbers, one of them not yours. Medications and conditions. "Do not feed." Friendly or not with dogs and children. Your vet clinic.

Test the alert
Get a friend to scan the tag once. You should get the notification, with a location, before they have finished reading the page.

Keep it current
Update the profile the day a number or address changes. Once a month, check the tag surface and the split ring for wear.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc
An ID tag is the fastest way home and a microchip is the permanent one. Keep both, and keep the chip registry current too, because that is the one most owners forget. The tag is not a GPS tracker: it tells you where your dog was scanned, not where they are now. Cats should wear it on a breakaway collar. Any silicone tag can be chewed by a housemate, so check it monthly and replace it if the surface splits. Put the medication and allergy notes in the profile: a finder who knows your dog is diabetic or reactive can keep them safe until you get there.

Why I designed it
Half the microchips I scan at 2 am ring a number that no longer works.
A stray comes into the emergency room at 2 am. We scan the chip, ring the number, and get an ex-partner, a disconnected line or an address from two houses ago.
- The details behind the chipThe chip did its job; the details behind it did not. That is why this tag exists.
- Live, and yours to editThe profile is live and yours to edit, so the day your number changes, the tag changes with it.
- No app for the finderThe person who finds your dog needs no app: they tap or scan with the phone already in their pocket and they are reading your numbers, your emergency contact and the medication note, and you get an alert with where the scan happened.
- Not a GPS trackerIt is not a GPS tracker and I will not pretend it is. It is the fastest way for a stranger to reach you, for less than a bag of treats.
- Keep the microchip. Add this.Bridie, Kiko and Gary wear theirs every day.

These tags are fantastic. Not only do they look great but I feel safer. I see so many list dogs online and people asking for someone to scan them, now they only need to look at their tag! Perfect. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats with them. Living in the rural area, you can't take chances.
April 2026 I got the Avocado tags for both my cats and my dog (staffy). The tags are super easy to set up, and the app is great. They're not too big for the cats and they aren't bothered by them. I've had the tag on my staffy's collar and it has withstood her intense activity!
May 2026 This is one of those products you don’t realise you need until you have it. The NFC tag is super lightweight and doesn’t bother my dog at all. I love that I can update details anytime without replacing the tag. Way better than traditional engraved tags — especially for medical info and emergency contacts.

Part of the Ask A Vet ecosystem
The tag is the front door. The profile behind it is the whole house.
The same Ask A Vet profile that a finder sees is the one you use every day: weight, vaccinations, medications and reminders, documents, family sharing, and a certified vet to chat to when something is not right. Buy the tag, activate the profile, and your dog is on the platform Dr Duncan Houston built for exactly this.

Does the person who finds my dog need an app?
No. A QR code opens in any phone camera and NFC works with a tap on any recent iPhone or Android. They land on your dog's profile in a browser and can call you from it. Only you use the Ask A Vet app, to set the profile up and edit it.
Does it replace a microchip?
No, and I would not want it to. A microchip is permanent but invisible, needs a scanner at a vet or a shelter, and rings whatever number was on the form years ago. The tag is instant, visible and editable. Keep both, and update the chip registry the same day you update the tag.
Is it a GPS tracker?
No. It tells you where your dog was scanned, not where they are now, and it has no battery because it does not need one. If you want live location, activity and health tracking, that is the Smart GPS & Health Tracker with its tracker plan, and the Track & Scan Bundle gives you both.
Is there a subscription?
No. The Ask A Vet pet profile behind the tag is free for life. Ask A Vet Premium, which adds certified vet chat and more, is optional and never needed for the tag to work.
Which size and style should I choose?
Small for cats and dogs up to about 10 kg. Medium for dogs over 10 kg. Pick the Slide-On if your dog swims, runs through scrub or lives with a housemate who chews tags: it sits flat on the collar with nothing to dangle.
What should I put on the profile?
Two numbers, one of them a person who is not you. Medications and conditions. Whether your dog is friendly with dogs, cats and children. Anything a stranger should not do, such as feed them. Your vet clinic. You choose what a finder sees, so leave out what you would not tell a stranger.
Is it safe for cats and small dogs?
It weighs about 10 grams and has no metal edges or clinking parts, so most cats forget it is there. Cats should wear any tag on a breakaway collar that opens if it catches on a branch. For a dog that chews at a hanging tag, choose the Slide-On.
What if it arrives damaged or stops scanning?
Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are covered: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number. There is no battery to fail; if a tag ever wears to the point the QR will not read, get in touch and we will sort it.
