  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:13 And here is a bunch of toys. Today we're going to go through the Chewsters range donut toy.
  3. 0:17 This comes in four different strengths. We've got glow-in-the-dark, which is made out of silicone.
  4. 0:27 Then you've got blue, purple, and black, which are three different strengths of material. Blue is softer, purple is standard, and black is harder.
  5. 0:35 Apart from the silicone one, these are all made from 25% recycled rubber material from defective products.
  6. 0:43 25% is the maximum amount of recycled rubber used so that the toys do not become too brittle or fall apart during remolding.
  7. 1:05 The glow-in-the-dark and blue ones are better for puppies, older dogs, and gentle chewers. Standard purple and black are for adult dogs or big chewers.
  8. 1:16 Inside the donut, there are big holes alternating with narrow sections. The entire donut body forms a cavity suitable for pastes, treats, and snacks.
  9. 1:50 The Snacky Hive is recommended for slow-dispensing full meals because of its larger internal volume.
  10. 2:08 When comparing same-colored toys, their structural designs determine relative strength: the turtle shell is the softest, followed by the donut, the Snacky Hive, the octopus, and finally the Blocky Bone as the toughest.
  11. 2:44 Each design offers unique benefits.
  12. Turtle Shell: Hard to get treats out of and difficult for dogs to pin down because it spins and slips around.
  13. Donut: Heavier with central openings that make food retrieval challenging.
  14. Snacky Hive: Best option for holding full meals.
  15. Octopus: Features bottom flaps, outer grooves, and a tough head area; keeps dogs occupied longer.
  16. Blocky Bone: Solid center with entry holes on both ends. Covered in "W" logos designed to hold paste and scrape teeth and gums for dental health.

How it works

Why the Donut is the Chewster you can throw

A golden retriever trots along with a purple Chewster Donut in its mouth.

A fetch toy that does not sand the teeth

A ring rolls on its edge, so a low throw sends it curving across the yard and a bounce sends it somewhere neither of you expected.

  • A chase, not a sprintThat is a chase, not a sprint, and a dog that has to track and re-grip a toy tires faster and thinks more.
  • Rubber, not tennis-ball feltThe rubber matters as much as the shape: tennis-ball felt loaded with grit wears enamel, and a solid rubber ring does not.
  • Roll it or throw it lowCatching anything hard in a leap is how canines get chipped, whatever the toy.

Match the strength to the dog, not to the marketing

Same ring, same nubs, same size; only the rubber changes. Between two strengths, go harder for a shredder and softer for a puppy or a senior.

  • Blue is SoftSoft (Blue) is for puppies still cutting adult teeth, older dogs with worn teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it.
  • Purple is StandardStandard (Purple) is right for most adult dogs.
  • Black is HardHard (Black) is for the staffies, cattle dogs and mastiffs who have destroyed everything else.
  • The one way to break a DonutAn aggressive chewer on a Soft or Standard ring is the one way to break a Donut, and it is the one thing the pills above are there to prevent.
A man in a purple jumper kneels beside a golden retriever and spoons yoghurt around the centre of a purple Chewster Donut.

Nubbed on top, open in the middle

The raised nubs on the icing and the scalloped edge where it meets the white base work across the teeth and along the gum line as the dog chews, and give the jaws something to hold.

  • Pack it and freeze itInside, the ring is hollow: big openings alternate with narrow sections, and the whole body takes paste, treats and snacks. Pack in xylitol-free peanut butter or yoghurt, freeze it, and you get a slow session.
  • Hard work to emptyIt is heavy for its size, and the openings around the centre make getting the food back out a challenge.
  • Feeding a whole meal? For slow-dispensing a full meal, the Snacky Hive holds more.

Four sizing rules

  • One size: a 12 cm ring, 4 cm thick, about 220 g. It suits dogs from about 7 kg to about 35 kg: too wide to swallow, light enough to carry and roll.

  • Toy breed under 7 kg? The Blocky Bone Small is the better fit. Power chewer over 35 kg, or a dog whose lower jaw fits through the centre hole? Take the Blocky Bone Large.

  • The real choice is the strength. Soft for puppies still cutting adult teeth, seniors and gentle chewers. Standard for most adult dogs. Hard for the ones that have destroyed everything else.

  • Typical breeds in that range: Beagle, Staffy, Kelpie, Labrador (15 to 77 lb).

How to

How to use a fetch-and-chew toy safely

  • A golden retriever puppy holds a blue Chewster Donut while an older golden retriever rests a paw on a black one.

    Pick the strength

Soft for puppies and seniors, Standard for most dogs, Hard for power chewers. Not sure? A dog that has never destroyed a toy takes Standard; a dog with a graveyard of toys takes Hard.

  • A man in a purple jumper crouches and rolls a purple Chewster Donut along the ground as a golden retriever chases it.

Roll it, or throw it low

Roll it on its edge or throw it low so the dog chases it along the ground and it bounces off-line. Keep the throws low with a keen catcher: leaping to catch anything hard is how teeth get chipped.

  • A man in a purple jumper slides a purple Chewster Donut on a tray into a small freezer, a timer reading 1 h on top.

Smear and freeze for a slow session

Xylitol-free peanut butter or yoghurt packed inside and over the nubs, an hour in the freezer. For a whole meal, use the Snacky Hive.

  • A man in a purple jumper sits on a stool and looks closely at the edge of a purple Chewster Donut.

    Inspect after every session

Check the icing edge, the nubs and the centre. Retire the ring once a piece can be bitten off or the centre has widened enough to trap a jaw.

  • A man in a purple jumper sits cross-legged with a clipboard about treat calories while a golden retriever licks a purple Chewster Donut beside him.

    Count the calories

Whatever goes on the ring comes out of the daily food allowance. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

No chew toy is indestructible, and a determined dog can damage anything given enough time. Match the strength to the dog: a Hard ring in a puppy's mouth can crack a tooth, and a Soft one in a power chewer's mouth becomes pieces. Keep throws low: a dog leaping to catch anything hard can chip a canine. Supervise sessions, especially the first few. Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol (sometimes labelled birch sugar): it is toxic to dogs. If your dog swallows a piece of any toy and vomits, strains, or goes off food, see a vet the same day.

Why I designed it

Fetch is how most dogs get their exercise, and a tennis ball is the worst thing to play it with. So I made a ring.

Ask an owner how their dog gets exercise and most say fetch, and most are throwing a tennis ball.

  • Felt works like sandpaperThe felt on a tennis ball picks up grit and works like sandpaper, and I see the result in the consult room: ball-obsessed dogs with their front teeth worn blunt by middle age.
  • Chase it, then chew itI wanted a toy a dog could chase and then chew.
  • A ring rolls and bounces off-lineThe Donut is a rubber ring, so it rolls on its edge, bounces off-line and turns a straight sprint into a chase the dog has to think about.
  • Afterwards, a proper ChewsterAfterwards it is a proper Chewster: nubs on top for the gums, a hollow body you can pack and freeze, and Soft, Standard and Hard so the rubber matches the jaw.
  • Treats inside, and work to get them outThe body is hollow, so paste, treats and snacks go inside, and the openings make the dog work to get them out. For a whole meal, the Snacky Hive holds more.
  • Tested on Bridie and KikoBridie and Kiko tested every version.

    Which strength should I choose?

Soft (Blue) for puppies still cutting their adult teeth, older dogs with worn or missing teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it. Standard (Purple) for most adult dogs: it is the one to buy if you have never had a toy destroyed. Hard (Black) for the dogs with a graveyard of toys behind them: staffies, cattle dogs, mastiffs, and any dog that has already shredded a Standard. If you would describe your dog as an aggressive chewer, the Hard is the only Donut to buy, and the first sessions are supervised.

    Does it hold treats?

Yes. The ring is hollow: inside, big openings alternate with narrow sections, and the whole body takes paste, treats and snacks. Pack it with peanut butter that is free of xylitol, plain yoghurt or wet food, then an hour in the freezer, which gives most dogs 15 to 20 minutes of licking. It is heavy for its size, and the openings make getting the food back out a challenge. For slow-dispensing a whole meal, the Chewster Snacky Hive holds more.

    Is it safe for puppies?

The Soft strength is made for them. Puppies chew hardest between about three and seven months while the adult teeth come through, and a chew that is too hard at that age can chip a tooth. Give a puppy the Soft, rolled along the ground rather than thrown, and move up to Standard once the adult teeth are in and you have seen how they chew. Do not start a puppy on the Hard.

Will it suit my dog's size?

It is one size: a 12 cm ring, 4 cm thick and about 220 g, so it suits dogs from about 7 kg to about 35 kg. Two rules for any ring toy: the whole thing must not fit behind the teeth, and the lower jaw must not fit through the hole. A toy breed under 7 kg does better with the Blocky Bone Small; a power chewer over 35 kg should take the Blocky Bone Large.

Can I throw it for fetch?

Yes, that is the point of the shape. Roll it on its edge or throw it low and it curves, bounces off-line and turns fetch into a chase. Keep it low with a keen catcher: a dog leaping to snatch anything hard out of the air can chip a canine on the way down, and that goes for balls, sticks and rings alike. It is rubber, not felt, so it does not wear the teeth the way a tennis ball does.

What are the flecks, and how do I clean it?

The flecks are recycled rubber. The Donut is made with 25% recycled content and the coloured specks in the icing and the white base are that material showing through. They are part of the rubber, not paint, and they do not chip. Cleaning: top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water with a nail brush over the nubs and around the centre. Let it dry before the next smear.

What if it arrives damaged or I picked the wrong strength?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong strength and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap.
