- 0:04 Good day, I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
- 0:12 Look, at the moment I have the Chewster Turtleshell Series. This comes in extra soft silicone, soft blue, normal or kind of firm for purple, and then extra hard for black.
- 0:26 Look, not all the toys are the same. I will say that the Blocky Bone is very tough. That one is really good for super chewers. This one is a bit weaker because it's hollow on the inside. You can stuff heaps of food inside of there.
- 0:40 It does have a small hole here. So, I'll say for bigger kibble, it is more difficult, but for small kibble and smaller dogs, this is great as a slow feeder treat dispenser.
- 0:50 It's really good for dental health, mainly massaging gums, because I see lots of issues with gums.
- 0:55 Anyway, so look, the reason why I've got these in different sizes actually, just as I was talking about that, is based off your animal's like jaw strength and what development point they're at or degradation point.
- 1:06 So, extra soft is really good for puppies as well as old dogs where their teeth are falling out. The next step as they get a bit older or they're not quite as old, you've got blue, which is a bit, you know, a bit firmer, but then softer than purple.
- 1:23 Purple: this is just your normal standard firmness. This would be for a normal adult dog that chews, but obviously doesn't destroy too much.
- 1:29 And then the black one is for a dog that likes to bite and chew down, but I wouldn't give this to a super chewer. A super chewer I would give the Blocky Bone.
- 1:37 I have had dogs that have destroyed the Blocky Bone, and that is a super hard toy. And there are like a couple, not many, there are a couple of dogs that have taken little pieces off the end of it, and I'm like, "That is super hard, I can't sell people a brick."
- 1:51 This is one of the most popular toys I have. As I said, really good slow feeder dispenser.
- 1:57 You can still clean them. People ask me, "How do you clean these?" You just get one of those scrubbing brush things, and it goes up on the inside and you can brush around there. These are dishwasher safe.
- 2:06 These three are made from natural rubber and this one is made from silicone. These are all made in a human-grade baby factory, to be honest.
- 2:15 And these are made with 20% recycled rubber. These three, the natural rubber ones, are made from 20% recycled rubber. The silicone one is just silicone and glow-in-the-dark.
- 2:24 That's the Chewster Turtleshell toy. See you next time.

How it works
Why the Turtleshell works when one-strength chews fail

Match the strength to the dog, not to the marketing
Same shape, same treat hole, same size; only the rubber changes.
- Soft for puppies and seniorsSoft (Blue) is for puppies still cutting adult teeth, older dogs with worn teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it.
- Standard for most adult dogsStandard (Purple) is the normal firmness, right for most adult dogs that chew but do not destroy much.
- Hard for the dog that bites downHard (Black) is for the dog that likes to bite and chew down, not for a super chewer: those jaws take the Blocky Bone.
- Torn between two strengthsBetween two strengths, go harder for a dog that chews down hard and softer for a puppy or a senior.

A treat hole in the base that turns a snack into a session
The shell is hollow, so pack kibble, wet food or xylitol-free peanut butter into the base; being hollow also makes it a bit weaker than the solid Blocky Bone.
- Freeze it for longer sessionsFreeze it, and a five-minute snack becomes 20 minutes or more of licking, nudging and problem-solving.
- For the bored or anxious dogA frozen fill is the single best tool for a dog that gets destructive when bored or anxious.
- A shell that wobbles and rollsThe shell shape wobbles and rolls so the food does not fall straight out.

Scute ridges that reach the tooth surface
The raised plates and the grooves between them work across the teeth and along the gum line as the dog chews, and get saliva flowing.
- Dental help between brushesThe shell supports dental hygiene between brushes and check-ups.
- No replacement for brushes or check-upsThe shell does not replace brushes and check-ups, and any vet who tells you a toy does is selling something.
- Brown tartar is a vet visitBrown tartar or breath you can smell across the room is a vet visit, not a toy.

Four sizing rules
-
One size: 15 cm long, 9.5 cm wide and 5 cm high, about 160 g. It suits dogs from about 5 kg to about 35 kg: too big to swallow, small enough to carry.
-
A super chewer at any weight, or any dog that can get the whole shell behind their teeth? Take the Blocky Bone instead.
-
The real choice is the strength. Soft for puppies still cutting adult teeth, seniors and gentle chewers. Standard for most adult dogs that chew but do not destroy much. Hard for the ones that bite and chew down; super chewers take the Blocky Bone.
-
Typical breeds in that range: Cavalier, Staffy, Kelpie, Labrador (11 to 77 lb).

How to
How to use a stuffable chew toy safely

Pick the strength
Soft for puppies and seniors, Standard for most dogs, Hard for the dog that bites and chews down. Not sure? A dog that has never destroyed a toy takes Standard; a dog with a graveyard of toys is a super chewer and takes the Blocky Bone.

Introduce it stuffed
The first session should be a win: pack the base with something your dog loves and let them work it out while you are in the room.

Freeze for longer sessions
Stuffed and frozen, the Turtleshell keeps most dogs busy for 20 minutes or more. Use it before you leave the house, during visitors, or after a big walk.

Inspect after every session
Look at the rim and the treat hole. Retire the toy once a piece can be bitten off or the hole has widened enough to trap a jaw.

Count the calories
Whatever goes in the hole comes out of the daily food allowance. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc
No chew toy is indestructible, and a determined dog can damage anything given enough time. Match the strength to the dog: a Hard shell in a puppy's mouth can crack a tooth, a Soft one in a strong jaw becomes pieces, and a super chewer wants the Blocky Bone, not this shell. Supervise sessions, especially the first few. Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol (sometimes labelled birch sugar): it is toxic to dogs. If your dog swallows a piece of any toy and vomits, strains, or goes off food, see a vet the same day.

Why I designed it
The same chew toy is dangerous for one dog and boring for the next. So I made three.
In emergency I see both ends of the same mistake. The young Labrador with a cracked tooth from a chew that was far too hard for it, and the staffy that shredded a soft toy in ten minutes and swallowed the pieces.
- One-strength-fits-one-dogChew toys are not one-size-fits-all. They are one-strength-fits-one-dog.
- Match the rubber to the jawThe Turtleshell comes in Soft, Standard and Hard so you match the rubber to the jaw, with a treat hole in the base so the work lasts and a ridged shell that actually reaches the tooth surface.
- Tested on Bridie and KikoBridie and Kiko tested every prototype.
- If your dog beats the Hard oneIf your dog beats the Hard one, you have a super chewer: take the Blocky Bone, and email me the photo. That is how the next version gets better.

Roadie absolutely loves this turtle toy! As soon as I gave it to her she carried it all over the house and it's quickly become one of her favorite toys. I love that I can stuff treats inside to keep her busy, and it's held up really well even with daily chewing. The shape is adorable, it's easy for her to pick up and carry around, and it keeps her entertained way longer than most toys do. We've tried a lot of chew toys over the years and this is definitely one of the best. Highly recommend!
June 2026 My EBT pup has very strong jaws and very inquisitive mouth, and he gets bored really easily. The black turtle shell has survived where others perished, and keeps the pup entertained for about 15 minutes or so, depending on whether I fill it with basic kibble or a mix of good treats & kibble. We highly recommend! I would prefer a bright colour though, as it can be difficult to find at times, especially when it has been discarded under the sofa or in a dark corner.

Which strength should I choose?
Soft (Blue) for puppies still cutting their adult teeth, older dogs with worn or missing teeth, and gentle chewers who mouth a toy rather than attack it. Standard (Purple) for most adult dogs: the normal firmness for a dog that chews but does not destroy much, and the one to buy if you have never had a toy destroyed. Hard (Black) for the dog that likes to bite and chew down, but not for a super chewer: the shell is hollow so you can stuff it, which makes it a bit weaker than the solid Blocky Bone, so a dog with a graveyard of toys behind it takes the Blocky Bone instead. Between two strengths, go harder for a dog that chews down hard and softer for a puppy or a senior.
Is it safe for puppies?
The Soft strength is made for them. Puppies chew hardest between about three and seven months while the adult teeth come through, and a chew that is too hard at that age can chip a tooth. Give a puppy the Soft, stuffed and supervised, and move up to Standard once the adult teeth are in and you have seen how they chew. Do not start a puppy on the Hard.
Will it suit my dog's size?
It is one size: 15 cm long, 9.5 cm wide and about 160 g, so it suits dogs from about 5 kg to about 35 kg. The rule for any chew toy is that the whole thing must not fit behind the teeth. A super chewer at any weight, or a dog that can get the entire shell in their mouth, should take the Blocky Bone instead.
What are the flecks in the rubber?
Recycled rubber. The Turtleshell is made with 25% recycled content and the coloured specks you can see in the shell are that material showing through. They are part of the rubber, not paint, and they do not chip off. Black hides them, Blue and Purple show them more.
What can I put in it, and how do I clean it?
Kibble, wet food, plain yoghurt, mashed banana or pumpkin, and peanut butter that is free of xylitol. The hole is small, so small kibble works best and makes it a great slow feeder for a smaller dog; bigger kibble is harder to get in and out. Freeze it for a longer session. Afterwards, top rack of the dishwasher, or warm soapy water and a bottle brush through the hole. Let it dry before refilling. Whatever goes in counts toward the day's food.
Does it clean teeth?
The ridges and grooves scrub the tooth surface and get saliva flowing, which helps between brushes. It does not replace brushing or a dental check. If you can see brown tartar or smell the breath from across the room, that needs a vet, not a toy.
What if it arrives damaged or I picked the wrong strength?
Email hello@woopf.com as soon as you notice with a photo and your order number. Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are fully covered and we pay the return shipping when the error is ours. Picked the wrong strength and it is unused in its packaging? Email within 14 days and we will look at a swap.
