Dr Duncan explains the Furry Range Rectangle Bed

Read the script
  1. 0:05 Good day. I'm Dr. Duncan Houston and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:12 This is the fluffy range rectangle bed. The fluffy range has only got these in one size, the same as the round bed. This is the rectangle bed.
  3. 0:20 Because this outer fabric is more expensive, they come with a nice leather logo on the front for my brand, which is WOOPF™.
  4. 0:27 They come in two colors: you have brown, and you have gray, which is kind of like a mousy brown. I'm still trying to think of what animal this would be. I really like these beds.
  5. 0:36 For these ones, you'd probably be maxing out at about a seven-kilo dog or cat; I wouldn't go any bigger than that. Unless your animal likes to curl up, you could fit a ten-kilo Maine Coon or a ten-kilo dog in here if they do like to curl up in their bed. But if they want to stretch out, then this is not the bed for them.
  6. 0:54 On the bottom, you do have these little rubber dots. They don't grip straight away. As I keep saying, they don't grip on carpet and other kind of fluffy materials, but if you put them onto wood or kind of a flat surface, they do stick over time.
  7. 1:09 The more that your animal sits on these and the pressure of the dots on the floor, they do actually stick pretty well. It's not like a suction cup stick; it's just enough of a grip to keep it and hold it in the same place.
  8. 1:21 Anyway, let's go on the back. The reason these ones are slightly different is that I have got in here a memory foam material.
  9. 1:30 It's not as high density as my premium quality one, which is lavender-infused memory foam, but this is kind of just a standard memory foam. That one can be removed in the center.
  10. 1:42 This is the bolster around the outside. It is a filter floss material.
  11. 1:46 This one won't go in the washing machine; this one can be hand-washed and then just put out in the sun to dry. Don't wash this.
  12. 1:52 Then this cover can go in the washing machine. This can only go on a cold cycle for wash, so 30 degrees or less on a low spin cycle.
  13. 2:00 That's the fluffy range rectangle bed.

How it works

Why the rim, why the fur and the foam

Illustrated golden retriever puppy lying in a grey WOOPF™ Furry Range Rectangle Bed with its front paws and chin on the low fur rim

A low rim all the way round: the shape between the mat and the donut

Watch a cat or a small dog settle and most of them do the same thing: back into something, put the chin on an edge, and stretch the legs out along a straight side. A donut gives them the edge and no straight side; a flat mat gives them the length and nothing to lean on.

  • A rim of the same fur on all four sidesThis bed is the shape in between: a rectangle, so a half-curled small dog has a straight side for its legs, with a rim of the same fur on all four sides, low enough that a Pomeranian looks over it sitting up (the photographs), so a cat or a small dog steps in without climbing and still has fur at its back and a place for its chin.
  • Enclosure a cat will acceptIt is not a wall and it is not a built-up sofa bolster, only a low rim of filter floss under the fur, and that is the point: enclosure a cat will accept, and an old small dog will not have to negotiate.
  • The whole idea in one pictureThe toy poodle curled against the rim in the gallery is the whole idea in one picture.
Illustrated woman kneeling to load the grey fur cover of a WOOPF™ Furry Range Rectangle Bed into a front-loading washing machine, its cream foam insert on the floor beside her

Long fur, a memory foam insert and a zip-off cover: the cover is what goes in the machine

The fur is the Furry Range fur, the long plush pile from the Furry Range Round Bed and the puppy pouch, inside the nest and over the rim, so the pet is on fur whichever way it lies, and fur on every surface keeps its own heat in, self-warming in the plain sense, which suits a cat, a thin-coated dog and a cold floor.

  • Under the cushion is a memory foam insertUnder the cushion is a memory foam insert, a standard memory foam rather than the denser lavender memory foam in the SNÜZ, which is what keeps the floor of the nest flat instead of letting it dish the way a fibre-filled pad does, and it lifts out of the centre: foam out, cover off, and the cover alone goes in the machine, cold, 30 degrees or less, low spin. The bolster rim is hand wash only.
  • One size, 70 x 55 cm outsideOne size, 70 x 55 cm outside: a cat, a Pomeranian or a Cavalier half-curled (under about 45 cm nose to tail curled), a pet to about 10 kg that sleeps curled, a Maine Coon among them, or two toy dogs, as in the photographs; not a pet that sleeps stretched out.
  • A bigger dogA bigger dog wants the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed, the same shape in three sizes to 95 cm.

What it is not: the SNÜZ's memory foam, a bed for a big dog, or a treatment

Three things to know before you buy.

  • First, the foamFirst, the foam: it is a standard memory foam insert, less dense than the lavender memory foam in the SNÜZ, and nothing published gives a thickness or a density figure; this page calls it a memory foam insert, does not call the bed orthopedic, and sends a dog with sore joints, a dog after surgery or an old dog that struggles to rise to the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, whose memory foam is published.
  • Second, sizeSecond, size: this is a 70 x 55 cm bed with a low rim; it is a cat bed and a small-dog bed to about 7 kg, or about 10 kg for a pet that sleeps curled, and a dog past that, or any pet that sleeps stretched out, wants the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed in a bigger size or the SNÜZ.
  • Third, calmingThird, calming: a familiar fur nest makes a strange room easier, which is real, and it is not a treatment for a pet that panics.

Three sizing rules

  • Measure the pet curled up, nose to the base of the tail: under about 45 cm fits half-curled against the rim, with room to turn. A pet that sleeps stretched out wants a longer bed, not this one. Two toy dogs that sleep together fit side by side, as in the photographs. A bigger dog wants the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed, the same shape in three sizes to 95 cm; a pet that sleeps in a tight ball and likes to hide wants the Furry Range Round Bed, the same fur as a deep round nest.

  • Weight, as a guide: cats and dogs to about 7 kg, and up to about 10 kg, a Maine Coon say, for a pet that sleeps curled. That is the designer's guide, not a published limit. A dog past 10 kg, or any dog with stiff hips, wants published memory foam under it: the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed.

  • This is the bed for the bedroom floor, the end of a bed, the couch, a crate tray or a hard floor: little rubber dots underneath take hold on wood or any flat surface over time, as the pet's weight presses them down, not straight away and not a suction-cup grip, and they do nothing on carpet or a rug. For the first days on tiles or floorboards put it in a corner or against a wall; in a crate the low rim spends little floor, and the 70 x 55 footprint lies flat on a 36 inch tray (about 91 x 58 cm) and rides up the sides of a 30.

How to

How to size it, place it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to run a tape measure along a golden retriever puppy lying curled in a grey Furry Range Rectangle Bed

    Measure the curl

Curled up, nose to tail base, under 45 cm fits against the rim: about 7 kg as a guide, or about 10 kg for a pet that always sleeps curled. A pet that sleeps stretched out, or a bigger dog, wants the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed in a bigger size, not a squeeze.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy asleep curled in a grey Furry Range Rectangle Bed on the floor beside a beige armchair

Put it on the floor, the bed or a crate tray

Beside the couch, by your side of the bed, in the cat's sunny corner, on a crate tray. The rubber dots underneath take hold on wood or tiles over time as the pet's weight presses them, not straight away and not on carpet, so for the first days on a hard floor put it in a corner or against a wall.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy, tail up, pushing its nose and front paws into the cushion of a grey Furry Range Rectangle Bed

    Let them make the nest

Circling, kneading the cushion and pushing the nose into the rim is the bed being used properly. Plump the rim on wash day, not every morning.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to brush the fur of an empty grey Furry Range Rectangle Bed with a slicker brush

Brush weekly; foam out, cover off, cold wash fortnightly

A slicker brush or a rubber glove lifts the hair and stands the pile back up. Take the foam out, unzip the cover, and the cover alone goes in the machine: cold, 30 degrees or less, low spin, air dry, brush again; weekly for a pet with itchy skin, the same day after an accident. The foam stays out of the machine, and so does the bolster rim: hand wash it and dry it in the sun.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to watch a golden retriever step out over the rim of a grey Furry Range Rectangle Bed

    Watch how they get up

If the dog is stiff after a sleep, slow to rise or reluctant to step over even this rim, or the cat has stopped using a bed it liked, the bed is not the fix: see your vet, and for a dog move to published memory foam (the SNÜZ or the SNÖR).

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A bed is comfort, not treatment. A fur nest with a memory foam insert keeps a healthy pet warm, off a hard floor and on a flat surface; it is a standard memory foam with no published thickness or density, not the SNÜZ's, so buy this bed for the fur, the rim and the size, not for a joint. A dog that is stiff after rest, slow to rise, reluctant to jump or use stairs, licking at one joint or limping for more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination and, usually, published memory foam under it. A cat that stops using a bed it liked, or starts sleeping somewhere odd, is telling you something: pain, illness and stress all change where a cat sleeps, and that is a vet visit, not a new bed. A pet that panics when left, in a crate or in a car has a fear that a familiar bed can make a little easier and cannot fix; that is training, sometimes medication, and a conversation with your vet. Heat: fur on every surface is warm in a hot room or a car for a flat-faced dog, an overweight dog or an old one; put it in a cool room in summer, and never leave any pet in a parked car, bed or no bed. Chewers: a dog that opens the zip or a seam and eats foam can block a gut, so check the cover weekly and supervise a young dog with any foam bed. Accidents: foam out, cover off and washed the same day; if urine has reached the foam, air it fully before it goes back in. The floor: the rubber dots underneath take hold on wood or tiles over time, not straight away, and a bed that skates when an old dog steps into it is a bed that trips an old dog; until they have bedded in, keep it against a wall. A rim is not a barrier: a kitten or a puppy climbs out of it, and it is not a pen.

Why I designed it

The long-fur nest for the half-curler: an edge to lean on, no wall to climb.

Most cats and most small dogs sleep neither in a ball nor flat out. They half-curl: back against something, chin on an edge, legs out along a straight side. A donut gives them the edge and takes away the straight side; a flat mat gives them the length and nothing to lean on.

  • The shape in betweenThis is the shape in between, in the Furry Range fur, the long plush pile from the round bed, with a low rim all the way round and a foam insert underneath so the floor of it stays flat.
  • One size, 70 by 55One size, 70 by 55, which is a cat, a Pomeranian, a Maine Coon that curls up, or two toy dogs, as in the photographs: about 7 kg as a guide, 10 kg for a curler, and not a pet that sleeps stretched out.
  • The honest linesThis page calls it a standard memory foam insert, less dense than the SNÜZ's lavender memory foam and with no published thickness or density, does not call the bed orthopedic, and sends a sore hip to the SNÜZ or the SNÖR, whose memory foam is published.
  • Rubber dots underneathLittle rubber dots underneath take hold on wood or tiles over time, as the weight of the pet presses them down; not straight away, not on carpet, and not a suction-cup grip, just enough to hold the bed in one place.
  • A familiar soft surfaceAnd calming is a familiar soft surface, which is real, not a treatment. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

Which pets fit, and is one size enough?

One size, 70 x 55 x 12 cm outside. Measure the pet curled up, nose to the base of the tail: under about 45 cm fits half-curled against the rim with room to turn, which as a guide is a cat or a dog to about 7 kg, a Pomeranian, a Cavalier, a Cavoodle. A pet that always sleeps curled can go to about 10 kg, a Maine Coon or a 10 kg dog, but a pet that sleeps stretched out wants a longer bed; this is not the bed for it. Two toy dogs fit side by side, as in the photographs. A bigger dog wants the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed, the same shape in the bumps fur in three sizes to 95 cm, and a dog that needs a bed for stiff hips wants the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed.

Is it memory foam, and is it orthopedic?

Yes and no. There is a memory foam insert under the fur, which is why the floor of the nest stays flat, and it lifts out of the centre; it is a standard memory foam, less dense than the lavender memory foam in the SNÜZ, and nothing published gives its thickness or density, so this page does not call the bed orthopedic. Buy it as a fur nest with a memory foam floor for a healthy pet, and buy a dog with stiff hips, a dog after surgery or an old dog the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, whose memory foam is published.

This, the round bed or the Curves rectangle?

Same idea, three answers. A pet that sleeps in a tight ball and likes to hide wants the Furry Range Round Bed, this fur as a deep round nest with 27 cm walls. A pet that half-curls, back against something and legs out along a straight side, wants a low-rimmed rectangle: this one in the long fur at 70 x 55, or the Furry Curves Rectangle Bed in the bumps fur if you want a size, from 55 cm to 95. A dog that sleeps flat out on its side wants a mat, not this bed, and the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat has a grip base of its own for a hard floor. If you have never watched, watch tonight.

    Is it a cat bed?

Yes, and one of the better ones in the range for a cat: a low rim a cat can see over, long fur to knead, a rectangle that fits a windowsill ledge or the corner of a couch, and a foam floor that holds the cat's own warmth. Put it where the cat already sleeps rather than where you would like it to, leave it a week, and do not wash the new-bed smell out of it before the cat has claimed it. A cat that will not use a bed is usually a placement problem, not a bed problem.

Will it help my anxious dog?

In one specific way: a familiar fur nest that smells of home makes a strange room, a holiday rental or a night at a friend's easier, and that is real. It is not a treatment. A dog that panics when left, or in a crate or a car, panting, drooling, pacing, scratching to get out, has a fear that needs training, sometimes medication, and a vet; a softer bed will not fix it.

Does it slide on floorboards, and does it fit a crate?

Less and less. There are little rubber dots on the base; they do not grip straight away, and on carpet or other fluffy surfaces they do nothing, but on floorboards, tiles or any flat surface they take hold over time as the pet's weight presses them down: not a suction-cup grip, just enough to keep the bed in the same place. For the first days on a hard floor a corner or a wall behind it does the job. It does fit a crate, and the low rim spends little floor: 70 x 55 cm lies flat on a 36 inch tray (about 91 x 58 cm) and rides up the sides of a 30; the foam insert stops it bunching the way a fibre pad does. Measure the tray either way.

How do I wash it, and does the fur hold hair?

Take the foam out, unzip the cover and machine wash the cover alone, cold, 30 degrees or less, on a low spin, no softener. Air drying the cover out of the sun is kinder to a long fur, and brush the pile back up afterwards. No iron: heat mats faux fur for good. The bolster rim is filter floss and never goes in the machine: hand wash it and put it out in the sun to dry. The foam stays out of the machine too: air it, and if an accident has reached it, air it fully before it goes back in. Yes, a long fur holds hair: a slicker brush or a rubber glove once a week lifts it; the Brown, which is a light mocha, hides tan hair.

What if it does not fit, or it arrives damaged?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Change of mind and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will consider a return. A bed a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure your pet curled up before you order.
