  1. 0:05 G’day, I’m Dr. Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
  2. 0:10 This is the Furry Curves range of beds. So you can see it’s got little bumps in it. This fabric is super soft. This range is, yeah, Furry Curves range, obviously because it has furry curves in it. So we’ll go through it.
  3. 0:25 All right, comes in four sizes. You’ve got small, medium, large and extra large. I’m two metres tall. That’s how you can pretty much base all of my products.
  4. 0:35 It’s not memory foam, but it is still very soft. So it’s just that kind of, I guess, I don’t know what you call it, like filler fabric. Still super soft, super plush material. Yeah, I really like this fabric on top. It’s so soft.
  5. 0:48 I do get a lot of dogs that like this product. So the sleeper mat, I actually think more dogs prefer the donuts, the big round-size one, but it really depends on what your dog wants and where you’re going to put it in your house. So this being a rectangle, it’s really easy to fit anywhere in the house.
  6. 1:03 It comes in cream and white. I’ve got the white ones over there. I can bring them out in a second.
  7. 1:08 On the other side, on the base, you have these kind of sticky dots. They’re sticky when you run your hand over them. But once your dog has been sleeping on this side, these dots, over time, get really sticky, and they do actually stick to the ground. And then I have had to kind of, not peel it off, but you’ve got to pull it so it comes off.
  8. 1:27 You’ve got a grippy bottom, and then you’ve got a very nice plush fabric top. You’ve got a really nice metal zipper. It’s only going to catch on the inner fabric. So you can remove the cover. This is washable. Chuck it in the washing machine.
  9. 1:41 I should say it comes with a nice real leather logo that actually smells really good.
  10. 1:45 [Holding the inner pillow] This is not machine washable. You’ve got like a cotton outer or something. And then you’ve got the fireproof, I guess, bedding material on the inside, which is super soft and plush. This comes out. You can’t zip or undo this because otherwise you’ll have fluff going everywhere.
  11. 1:57 And don’t put this in the wash. This part [inner pillow] is not washable. This part [removable cover] is washable.
  12. 2:01 So very easy, inner and outer. When I zip this up, just put your finger on the inside of the zip, and then you can put it on straight away like that. Don’t try and do it the other way like this. Otherwise it always catches.
  13. 2:13 This is the cream range. This is the Furry Curves bed range in white. Comes in four sizes: small, medium, large and extra large. Exactly the same as the cream size, exactly the same design as the cream size.
  14. 2:27 Small, medium, large, extra large, Furry Curves Sleeping Mat. It does not have any walls. It is just a rectangle with a very soft inner fabric. Very good. Okay.

How it works

Why the fur, how to size it, and what it is not

Illustrated golden retriever asleep stretched out on its side on a cream WOOPF™ Furry Curves Sleeping Mat, its quilted fur top in soft rounded bumps

A bumpy fur top: the softest of the flat mats

The top is a quilted faux fur that lies in soft rounded bumps, the curves in the name, and it is the whole reason to choose this mat over the corduroy one.

  • Fur under its whole lengthA dog that sleeps flat out on its side gets fur under its whole length; a dog that noses into fabric before it settles has something to nose into; a cat kneads it.
  • Between the shag and the corduroyThe shag mat has the longer pile and the corduroy mat has the rib that brushes clean; this one sits between them, softer than the rib and easier to keep than the shag.
  • Cream or WhiteIt is the flat mat for a carpeted room, the end of a bed or a couch, and it comes in Cream, which is a light latte in every photograph rather than a cream, and White.
Illustrated golden retriever puppy lying stretched out on a thick cream WOOPF™ Furry Curves Sleeping Mat while a kneeling woman reaches towards it

Eight centimetres of foam, four sizes, measured by the dog lying flat

Under the fur is 8 cm of foam, which makes this a mattress rather than a pad: a dog lying on it is lying on foam, not on fibre over floorboards, and a big dog does not bottom out.

  • Four footprints, 74 to 118 cmThe four footprints are the corduroy mat's to the centimetre, 74 x 52, 90 x 59, 104 x 68 and 118 x 72 cm, and they are sized by the dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail: under about 65 cm the Small, under 80 the Medium, under 95 the Large, under 110 the Extra large, and between sizes go up.
  • Two small dogsTwo small dogs that sleep side by side take the Extra large.
  • What the foam isWhat the foam is, memory foam or support foam, and how dense, is not published.

What it is not: a grip base, published memory foam, or a treatment

Three things to know before you buy.

  • First, the baseFirst, the base: no non-slip fabric is listed on this mat, so on tiles or floorboards it will move when the dog circles and drops, and in a crate tray it will bunch; the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat has the rubber-dot base and is the one for hard floors and crates.
  • Second, the foamSecond, the foam: nothing published gives a type or a density; this page calls it 8 cm of foam and sends a dog with sore joints to the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, whose memory foam is published.
  • Third, calmingThird, calming: a familiar soft surface makes a strange place easier, which is real, and it is not a treatment for a dog that panics.

Three sizing rules

  • Measure the dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail: under about 65 cm fits the Small, under about 80 cm the Medium, under about 95 cm the Large, under about 110 cm the Extra large, each with room to shift. A dog that curls fits anything, but a curler is usually happier in a ring: the Furry Curves Round Bed is the same fur as a donut.

  • Weight bands, as a guide: Small for cats and dogs to about 8 kg, Medium for 8 to 15 kg, Large for 15 to 25 kg, Extra large for 25 to 40 kg or two small dogs side by side. These are a guide from the footprints, not a published limit; the mat has no rim, so a leg over the edge does no harm.

  • This is the mat for a rug, a carpeted room, the end of a bed or a couch. For tiles, floorboards or a crate tray, where a mat has to stay put, buy the Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat, which is the same four sizes with a rubber-dot base. A dog past ten with stiff hips, or any dog after surgery, wants published memory foam under it: the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed.

How to

How to size it, place it and keep it clean

  • Illustrated woman kneeling beside a golden retriever lying stretched out on its side on a cream Furry Curves Sleeping Mat

    Measure the dog flat

Nose to tail base lying stretched out on its side: under 65 cm the Small, under 80 the Medium, under 95 the Large, under 110 the Extra large. Between sizes, go up.

  • Illustrated woman on a couch stroking a golden retriever puppy lying on a cream Furry Curves Sleeping Mat on a round rug

Put it on carpet, a rug or the bed

Beside the couch on the rug, on the end of your bed, on the couch as a protector. Nothing on this mat is listed to grip a hard floor, so on tiles buy the corduroy mat instead.

  • Illustrated golden retriever puppy, tail up, pushing its nose into the bumpy fur of a cream Furry Curves Sleeping Mat while a kneeling woman watches

    Let them nose it

Circling, pawing at the fur and pushing the nose into the bumps before dropping is the mat being used properly. Shake the fur back up on wash day, not every morning.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to brush the fur of a cream Furry Curves Sleeping Mat with a slicker brush while a golden retriever sits on it

Brush weekly, wash the cover fortnightly

A slicker brush or a rubber glove lifts the hair and stands the fur back up. Cover off, cold wash, gentle cycle, air dry; weekly for a dog with itchy skin, the same day after an accident. The foam stays out of the machine.

  • Illustrated woman kneeling to watch a golden retriever sitting up on a cream Furry Curves Sleeping Mat

    Watch how they get up

If the dog is stiff after a sleep, slow to rise or reluctant to step up onto the couch, 8 cm of foam of an unpublished type is not the fix: see your vet, and move to published memory foam (the SNÜZ or the SNÖR).

Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc

A mat is comfort, not treatment. Eight centimetres of foam lifts a healthy dog off a hard floor and keeps its shape; what kind of foam it is has not been published, so buy this mat for the fur and the size, not for a joint, and a dog that is stiff after rest, slow to rise, reluctant to jump or use stairs, licking at one joint or limping for more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination and, usually, published memory foam under it. A dog that panics in a crate or a car has a fear that a familiar mat can make a little easier and cannot fix; that is training, sometimes medication, and a conversation with your vet. Heat: a quilted fur top is warm in a hot room or a car for a flat-faced dog, an overweight dog or an old dog; never leave any dog in a parked car, mat or no mat. Chewers: a dog that opens the zip or a seam and eats the foam can block a gut, so check the cover weekly and supervise a young dog with any foam mat. Accidents: get the cover off and washed the same day; if urine has reached the foam, air the foam fully before the cover goes back on. The floor: with no grip base listed, a mat that skates when an old dog steps onto it is a mat that trips an old dog; keep it on carpet or against a wall.

Why I designed it

The soft flat one: for the sprawler who sleeps on the rug.

Two flat mats, the same four sizes, the same 8 cm under the dog, and a different skin for a different floor. The corduroy mat has the ribbed top and the rubber-dot base, and it is the one for tiles, timber and a crate tray.

  • The soft oneThis one is the soft one: a bumpy quilted fur that a dog sinks into and noses through, for the dog that sleeps flat out on the rug, on the end of your bed or on the couch, where a mat does not need to grip.
  • Four sizes, 74 to 118 cmFour sizes, 74 to 118 cm, sized by the dog lying stretched out, because a dog that sleeps on its side with its legs straight is the dog a donut wastes its bolster on.
  • The honest linesThere is 8 cm of foam under the fur; nothing published says what kind or how dense, so this page calls it 8 cm of foam, and I keep the word orthopedic for the SNÜZ and the SNÖR, whose memory foam is published.
  • No grip base listedThere is no grip base listed, so on tiles it moves.
  • A familiar soft surfaceAnd calming is a familiar soft surface, which is real, not a treatment. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

    Which size do I buy?

Measure the dog lying stretched out on its side, nose to the base of the tail, and buy the mat that is longer than that with room to shift: under about 65 cm the Small, under 80 cm the Medium, under 95 cm the Large, under 110 cm the Extra large. As a guide that is cats and dogs to about 8 kg, 8 to 15, 15 to 25, and 25 to 40 kg or two small dogs side by side. Between sizes, go up. A dog that curls fits anything, but a curler is usually happier in a ring, and the Furry Curves Round Bed is the same fur as a donut.

Is it memory foam, and is it orthopedic?

There is 8 cm of foam under the fur, which makes this a mattress rather than a pad. Buy it as a thick soft mat for a healthy dog, and buy a dog with stiff hips, a dog after surgery or an old dog the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, whose memory foam is published.

    Curves or the corduroy mat?

Same four sizes, same 8 cm, different skin and different floor. This one has the bumpy quilted fur, the softest top of the flat mats, and no non-slip base is listed, so it is the mat for a rug, a carpeted room, the end of a bed or the couch. The Furry Corduroy Sleeping Mat has a ribbed plush top that brushes clean and a rubber-dot base that grips tiles, timber and a crate tray. Hard floors, crates, cars, a digger: corduroy. Carpet and a fur-lover: this one.

Does it slide on floorboards, and does it fit a crate?

On floorboards or tiles it will move when the dog circles, because no grip fabric is listed on the base; on carpet or a rug it stays put. It will lie in a crate (the Large is about the floor of a 42 inch crate, the Extra large a 48), but a mat without a grip base bunches on a plastic tray, so for a crate buy the corduroy mat, which is the same size with rubber dots. Measure the tray either way: a foam mat does not fold to fit.

Will it help my anxious dog?

In one specific way: a familiar soft mat that smells of home makes a strange room or a holiday rental easier, and that is real. It is not a treatment. A dog that panics when left, or in a crate or a car, panting, drooling, pacing, scratching to get out, has a fear that needs training, sometimes medication, and a vet; a fluffier mat will not fix it, and the listing should not have said it would.

How do I wash it, and does the fur hold hair?

The cover zips off and goes in the machine cold on a gentle cycle, no softener; air dry out of the sun and shake the fur back up. No tumble dryer and no iron: heat mats faux fur for good. The foam stays out of the machine: air it, and if an accident has reached it, air it fully before the cover goes back on. Yes, a quilted fur holds hair: a slicker brush or a rubber glove once a week lifts it; the Cream, which is a light latte, hides tan hair and the White shows everything.

What if the size is wrong, or it arrives damaged?

Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A mat a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure the dog flat before you order rather than after.
