- 0:05 G'day, I'm Dr Duncan Houston, and this is my fake living room.
- 0:12 Here is the calming shag range of beds. These are the round beds. Very explanatory—the reason why there's "calming" in there, lots of other brands have this "calming" because of this shag material.
- 0:23 It got really heavily marketed by one company, which really pushed it, and I guess it caught on for, you know, people marketing it and other brands.
- 0:30 For dogs that are anxious, that kind of want to hide away and tuck their face in, then yeah, cool. That's why it's called the calming range.
- 0:36 So this one technically only comes in two sizes. So the shag calming range will come in a medium size and a large size.
- 0:44 But we do have a small size, but it only comes in small with the deer antlers. So I really liked this because it was really cute. I liked the deer antlers, but anyway.
- 0:55 This one is not machine washable. The cover cannot come off on this one because it has these deer antlers attached. These are not washable.
- 1:03 So this is the small size, one colour, but this is a separate product to these ones because it's got the deer antlers on it. It's technically not the same.
- 1:11 Anyway, so let's go to the other ones. That one's brown, by the way.
- 1:14 They come in white, cream and brown. You've got three colours and two different sizes.
- 1:20 This one will fit pretty much a maximum of up to, like, a 15-kilo dog, and then the large size is up to 30 kilos.
- 1:26 So the large size is roughly 15- to 30-kilo dogs, and this one is kind of, you know, tiny dogs to 15 kilos.
- 1:33 I would say that small bed is kind of five or six kilos max. So maybe this is five to 10 kilos.
- 1:38 So, really soft material. You've got a really nice kind of cushioned inner bit. This is made out of, like, a flame-retardant material. It's not memory foam.
- 1:46 It does have the grippy dots on the bottom. So these grippy dots are really good for wooden floors, tiles, flat surfaces, but, you know, not too grippy for carpet.
- 1:55 But the longer this stuff sticks to the same place on a floor, the better it grips.
- 1:59 This is the flame-retardant fluffy material. This is not machine washable, this part, but I would say that you can still hand wash it, cold hand wash it, and put it in the sun to dry out.
- 2:09 You've got an elastic Velcro cover bit here that covers and does hold the zipper, because the zipper connection—you do pop the zipper open on this bit, and then you pull out the donut bolster.
- 2:21 So bolster or wall, again, this is cold hand wash, put in the sun.
- 2:26 This part is machine washable. So it is cold machine wash, but it is machine washable, and this is the fabric cover.
- 2:33 Super easy to put back together, you know, once it's nice and dry and fluffy, and it's all warm from being out in the sun.
- 2:38 It's also got a nice leather tag. They smell really good at the moment, as they're new.
- 2:41 And yeah, it's just our standard range, and they're really good quality. So yeah, anyway.

How it works
Why a round bed, why shag, and which dog should be on foam instead

A ring to curl into, a rim to put a chin on
Watch a small dog settle: three turns, a flop, and the back pushed up against whatever is there.
- A wall on every sideA round bed with a padded ring gives that dog a wall on every side without a corner to waste, and the rim is at chin height, so the head rests up and the neck relaxes instead of lying flat on the floor.
- Soft fill, not a boardThe well in the middle is soft fill, not a board, and it takes the shape of the dog in it. That is what the word "donut" is doing in the name: not a style, a sleeping position.
- Cats never needed tellingCats never needed telling; a cat given the Medium will move in on the first night.

Self-warming means their own heat, kept
There is nothing to plug in.
- A layer of still airA long shag pile traps a layer of still air around the dog, the same way a blanket does, and a curled dog in a ring loses less heat than a dog stretched flat on a mat.
- Still warm when they climb back inThe result is a bed that is still warm when they climb back in, which is what a short-coated small dog, a whippet, an old dog or a cat is looking for in winter.
- The other side of thatThe other side of that: in a hot house, or for a thick-coated dog, this is the bed they lie next to in summer, and a long pile holds hair, so a weekly shake outside and a brush are part of owning one.

What it is not: orthopedic, a treatment, or a summer bed
There is no memory foam in this bed and the page will not pretend there is.
- Not orthopedicA dog past eight with stiff hips, a big dog, or a dog recovering from surgery belongs on the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, the NÄP Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÜZ sofa, all of which put foam under the joints. This is a plush nest for a dog that is well and sleeps curled.
- Not a treatment"Calming" is a shape, not a medicine: a nervous dog will tuck itself into a ring, and that is worth having, but a dog that paces, hides, trembles or cannot settle has anxiety that needs a vet and a plan, not a softer bed, and the vet note below says how to tell.
- Not a summer bedAnd it is the winter bed: on a hot night the pile is too much for most dogs and they will tell you by sleeping on the tiles.

Three sizing rules
-
Measure your pet curled up the way they actually sleep, nose round to tail. The well inside the rim is a good deal smaller than the outer size, so choose the size whose outer measurement is at least 25 cm more than that number, and between sizes go up.
-
Weight bands, curled up: Medium for cats and dogs to about 15 kg, Large for 15 to 30 kg. A Cavalier fills the Medium; a Border Collie curled fills the Large. These are a guide from the sizes, not a published limit.
-
A dog that sleeps stretched out, on its side with its legs straight, does not want a ring at all: a bigger donut just wastes the rim. Look at the Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat or the SNÜZ sofa instead. A dog over 30 kg, or any dog with sore joints, wants foam under it: the NÄP, the SNÖR or the sofa.

How to
How to place it, keep it fluffy and wash it

Put it where they already sleep
A round bed goes where the dog has been choosing to sleep, against a wall, beside the couch or in the crate, not in the middle of the room. A curler wants a back to the wall on both sides.

Let them find it
Put a worn T-shirt or their blanket in the well for the first few nights. Do not lift a dog into a bed; a dog put into a bed gets out of it.

Shake it outside weekly
A long pile holds hair and dust. A shake outside and a brush with a rubber glove or a slicker keeps the pile up and the hair off, and is the difference between a bed that looks new at six months and one that does not.

Wash it cold, dry it flat
Cover off and into the machine, cold, gentle cycle, no softener. Air dry out of direct sun, then brush the pile back up. Heat mats a shag pile and no dryer setting fixes that.

Put it away in summer
When the nights warm up and the dog starts sleeping on the tiles, wash it, dry it, bag it. It is the winter bed; it will be the first thing they climb into in May.
Vet noteDr Duncan Houston, BVSc
A bed is comfort, not treatment. A nervous dog will use a ring to tuck itself away, and that is a good thing to give it, but a dog that paces, trembles, hides, drools, will not eat, or cannot settle at night has anxiety that a bed cannot fix; that is a conversation with your vet about training, environment and, sometimes, medication, and the earlier the better. This bed has no foam in it. Stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump or use stairs, licking at one joint, or a limp that lasts more than a day or two needs a veterinary examination and, usually, an orthopedic bed, not a fluffier one. Heat: a long pile is warm, which is the point in winter and a risk in a hot room for a flat-faced dog, an overweight dog or an old dog with a heart problem; if your dog pants on it, move it somewhere cool or put it away until autumn. Puppies and chewers: a shag pile pulls, and swallowed fibre and fill can block a gut, so supervise a young dog with any plush bed and take it away from one that is eating it. Wash it after any accident: urine left in a long pile is a skin problem within a day or two.

Why I designed it
Buy it for the curl and the warmth. Do not buy it for the anxiety.
A lot of small dogs sleep in a ball with their back against something, and every cat does. A round bed with a padded rim gives them that: a wall at the back whichever way they turn, an edge to hang a chin over, and a well that holds the heat they make.
- The long shag pileThe long shag pile is the point of this one. It is the softest surface in the range, it traps a small dog's warmth the way a blanket over a basket does, and it is the bed a short-coated dog chooses in July.
- The honest linesNow the honest lines, because this category is full of nonsense.
- Self-warming"Self-warming" means it keeps your dog's heat in; there is no heating element and no clever fibre, and I would not sell you one that claimed otherwise.
- Calming"Calming" means a nervous dog has somewhere to tuck itself; it does not treat anxiety, and a dog that paces, trembles or cannot settle needs a vet, not a fluffier bed.
- No foam in itAnd there is no foam in it, so an old dog with sore hips belongs on the SNÖR or the NÄP, not here. Bridie and Kiko tested every version.

Our small short haired dog used to shiver during cooler months, but this bed has kept her noticeably warmer and more settled. A thoughtful design that delivers real comfort.
June 2026 We were curious how the self warming claim would hold up, and it's been impressive. Our dog settles in faster on cooler nights without needing any extra blankets.

Which size for my dog?
Measure them curled up, nose round to tail, and buy the size whose outer measurement is at least 25 cm more; between sizes go up. As a guide, the Medium (76.5 cm across) takes cats and dogs to about 15 kg curled, a Cavalier, a Frenchie, a Mini Dachshund; the Large (100.5 cm) takes 15 to 30 kg curled, a Cocker Spaniel, a Whippet, a Staffy, a Border Collie. A dog that sleeps stretched out wants the Fluffy Shag Calming Sleeping Mat instead, and a dog over 30 kg wants foam under it.
Is it really self-warming?
In the plain sense, yes: the long pile traps still air around the dog and keeps their own body heat in, the way a blanket over a basket does, so the bed is warm to climb back into. There is no heating element, no insert and no special fibre, and anyone who tells you otherwise about a plush bed is selling. It makes it the winter bed, and the one to put away when the dog starts sleeping on the tiles.
Will it help my anxious dog?
It gives a nervous dog somewhere to tuck itself: a ring at its back on every side, which is what dogs that sleep under tables are looking for. That is worth having. It is not a treatment. A dog that paces, trembles, hides, will not eat or cannot settle at night has anxiety that needs a vet and a plan, and sometimes medication, and the sooner that conversation happens the better. Buy the bed for the shape; see your vet for the dog.
Is it orthopedic?
No. There is no memory foam in it; the ring and the well are soft fibre fill. That is fine for a healthy dog that sleeps curled, and wrong for an old dog with stiff hips, a big dog or a dog after surgery: those dogs belong on the SNÖR Vet Orthopedic Bed, the NÄP Vet Orthopedic Bed or the SNÜZ Vet Orthopedic Bed, which put foam under the joints.
Does the cover come off, and how do I wash it?
Yes: the cover is removable and machine washable. The zip sits under an elastic Velcro flap; open it and the donut bolster pulls out. The bolster is not machine washable: hand wash it cold and dry it in the sun. Wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle without softener, air dry out of the sun, then shake it and brush the pile back up. No tumble dryer and no iron: heat mats a shag pile for good. Between washes, a weekly shake outside lifts the hair.
Is it too hot in summer?
For most dogs, yes, and that is not a fault. A long pile that keeps heat in during winter keeps it in during January too. When the nights warm up, or for a thick-coated dog, a flat-faced dog or an overweight dog that runs hot, wash it, dry it and put it away, and give them something cool and flat. If your dog pants while lying on it, move the bed somewhere cooler or take it away.
Can a cat use it?
A cat will use the Medium whether or not you meant it to. The ring, the pile and the enclosed well are exactly what a cat picks, and a 76.5 cm ring is a large cat bed. Keep it away from a cat that chews fabric or fibre, which some do, and wash it on the same schedule as you would for a dog.
What if the size is wrong, or it arrives damaged?
Damaged on arrival or faulty: email hello@woopf.com with a photo and your order number as soon as you notice, and it is covered. Wrong size and it is unused in its packaging: email within 14 days and we will look at a swap. A bed a dog has slept on cannot come back for hygiene reasons, so measure the curled-up pet before you order rather than after.
